[This story contains spoilers for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.]
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts director Steven Caple Jr. has now brought two intriguing what-if scenarios to fruition.
In 2018’s Creed II, Caple Jr. pitted the sons of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) and Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) against each other, and while Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) emerged the victor, the audience still felt sympathy for the Drago family, which seemed all but impossible in Rocky IV (1985). Shortly after the release of Creed II, Paramount talked to Caple Jr. about potentially helming a sequel to Travis Knight’s Bumblebee (2018), but the Ohio native didn’t want to follow up a direct sequel with another direct sequel.
A year or so later, Caple and Paramount resumed talks and agreed on a new take that was influenced by the Transformers: Beast Wars animated storyline, introducing animal-like Transformers known as the Maximals, the planet-eating big bad, Unicron, and his henchmen,...

Allow me to state upfront that I have now nor ever have been a fan of the Transformers. When they arrived, my tastes ran in other directions. That said, I have done some behind-the-scenes work with the franchise a few times in my career so have a good working knowledge. I’ve also seen the first Michael Bay and bits of the subsequent ones, enough to know these also aren’t to my taste.
I was therefore ready to outright reject the first solo film, Bumblebee, but the trailers hooked me. That and the arrival of Hailee Steinfeld, who I have enjoyed since True Grit. As a result, the film, out now on disc from Paramount Home Entertainment, is far more enjoyable than imagined.

When I first saw the trailer for Bumblebee last June, I liked a lot of what I saw. The fact that the hero is a Volkswagen Beetle instead of a Camaro. The more faithful robot designs. I also liked the idea of the focus on a single character, since it suggested a stripped-down type of story, which after the cacophony of twisted metal that was the Michael Bay film series, was a welcome prospect. I had wanted to see this film earlier, but with all the holiday goings-on and other films to watch, it kinda got lost in the shuffle until now.
It was pretty good. Aside from the kid next to me that wouldn’t shut up because his typically discourteous parent wouldn’t do the right thing by instructing his child that you’re not supposed to talk during a movie (which are often found in theaters I...

Okay, now just a couple of days ago, one of the year’s most anticipated sequels (54 years in the making) was released. So, while Ms. P is soaring through the skies, how about a change of pace? Who’s up for a “prequel”? You know, a story before the story you’ve already seen. This past Summer not very many (for this lucrative franchise) turned out for the much-hyped character rather than story prequel Solo: A Star Wars Story. Sure, it’s settled into this year’s top ten box officer grosser at number eight, but the franchise entries of the last few years have climbed into the top three (often in the top spot). That’s not of concern to the folks over at Paramount Studios. For the last eleven years, they’ve sent out five live-action feature films (of varying quality and profitability) all spawned from a very beloved line of toys.

We take a look at how the Bumblebee soundtrack informs the film and its characters.
This article contains Bumblebee spoilers.
It's been a week since I saw Bumblebee, and frankly I'm still a bit in shock. Whereas the previous entries in the Transformers franchise have felt overblown, if not just aggressively stupid, director Travis Knight's prequel does some much-needed course correcting by delivering instantly likable characters and a story that has some genuinely touching moments.
With the film wisely being set in the 1980s -- the decade in which the robots in disguise first came to prominence -- the movie is peppered with familiar songs for anyone who came of age in the era.
But let's get one thing perfectly clear, despite the radio/Spotify friendly tracks that dominate the film's official soundtrack (including star Hailee Steinfeld's own "Back to Life"), Bumblebee's best-utilized songs are...

Ok, we’re not sure, exactly, how to say this. It’s, um … well … right, fine [deep breath]. We’ll just say it.

You probably remember him somewhere within the haze of your post–Transformers-movies-screening memories, as very few human beings can recall much from those trainwreck blockbusters about good ‘bots and bad ‘bots, cars and jets, the...

It’s been 11 years since Michael Bay took the reins of the live-action “Transformers” movies, and in that time he has infused these films with a particular, cacophonous audio-visual aesthetic that has more in common with a rollercoaster at a rave in a war zone than what we would otherwise consider conventional, cinematic storytelling. His approach has its fans, but with “Bumblebee,” we can finally see what a filmmaker other than Michael Bay could do with the concept of alien machines that transform into stuff.
And it turns out they could do wonders.
“Bumblebee,” directed by Travis Knight (“Kubo and the Two Strings”), is the best “Transformers” movie so far, going all the way back to the 1986 animated film. And although one could argue that that’s a relatively low bar, since narrative coherence and recognizable character development are all it really takes to best its predecessors, saying so is...

We also hear from the actor how she feels about the film and getting to be a part of the Transformers story. Here’s the video:
Director Travis Knight has taken a cool approach to this story, as he expressed that Bumblebee is the Transformer with the deepest human connection, so he is allowing us to get to know him better throughout this movie. Here’s the full quote from Knight via comicbook.com

True Grit earned Hailee Steinfeld a Supporting Actress Oscar nomination and The Edge of Seventeen was roundly praised, and with Bumblebee she’s traversing relatively new ground. Though 2013’s sci-fi drama Ender’s Game was definitely underrated, it won’t garner the sizable audience that is destined to see Bumblebee.

For many people, the Transformers movies represent the modern Hollywood blockbuster at its most overdone and unpleasant, and after the relatively weak box office returns of Transformers: The Last Knight, the pressure is certainly on for Bumblebee to fix the public image of this once wildly successful sci-fi series.
Fortunately, the Travis Knight-helmed spinoff appears to be a more agreeable affair than what came before it and has already earned the curiosity of some of the franchise’s long-time detractors. Now, another trailer has arrived online to sway the rest of us and again, it’s really looking like this could be a step in the right direction for the Autobots.
Packed full of action, teases of a coming of age story and a surprising amount of heart, Bumblebee will no doubt be a bit of a departure from what we’ve come to expect from the Transformers franchise,...

Bumblebee screenwriter Christina Hodson on the Transformers franchise's new beginning.
When Bumblebee comes out this December, it will mark many firsts for the Transformers franchise: It will be the first Transformers film to not be directed by Michael Bay. (Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight will be behind the camera.) It will be the franchise’s first prequel. And it will be the first film in the series to be written by a woman.
“I think it's a bit of a myth that action is for boys,” Bumblebee screenwriter Christina Hodson tells Den of Geek. As a half-Asian Brit growing up watching action movies, Hodson rarely saw main characters who looked like her in the genre’s sea of white, male protagonists in their 30s and 40s.
“I always wanted to see me be the hero,” Hodson says. “I wanted to see me kick ass.

The latest trailer for the upcoming Bumblebee movie proved a hit with many viewers, and now Paramount Pictures are following through on that promo with a set of hi-res stills from the Transformers spinoff.
Set in a small California beach town in 1987, Bumblebee‘s set to deliver a drama on a smaller scale than the exhaustingly huge Michael Bay movies, but you can still expect plenty of the bot-v-bot action that this franchise has made its name on. Sure enough, amongst these pics is an image of Decepticons Shatter and Dropkick, voiced by Angela Bassett and Justin Theroux, respectively.
While these two threatening figures probably won’t be on the friendliest of terms with the movie’s titular autobot, the emotional focus of the pic looks to be the relationship between Bumblebee and the teenage Charlie Watson, played by Hailee Steinfeld.

Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer for Bumblebee, which shows Hailee Steinfeld forming a relationship with the lovable Transformer.
Bumblebee will take the series back in time to the 1980s, thus serving as a prequel to the main series as well as a spinoff. In the trailer, Steinfeld’s character Charlie Watson finds a Vw bug in a Californian junk yard, only to discover that the yellow car isn’t just a vehicle.
Turns out, Optimus Prime (or the ghost of the Transformer) sent Bumblebee on a mission to earth to protect the humans from war — and the Decepticons.

After five increasingly exhausting pictures from Michael Bay, the new Bumblebee spinoff movie could be the fresh start that this franchise needs, but so long as Paramount aren’t hitting the reset button on Transformers, Travis Knight’s film still exists within the continuity of its widely disparaged predecessors.
It therefore makes sense that the yellow Volkswagen Beetle won’t be the only giant robot to feature in the upcoming sci-fi. Indeed, it was already confirmed that head honcho Optimus Prime would have a part in the film, and now he makes an appearance in this new teaser, along with Decepticons Soundwave, Ravage, Shatter, and Dropkick.

And before he befriended Sam Witwicky, he was tight with a girl named Charlie Watson. Paramount Pictures has unveiled a Bumblebee trailer that gives us a look at the studio’s first live-action Transformers spin-off movie, […]

Paramount Pictures screened the first footage ever to an audience of their upcoming Bumblebee during their CinemaCon presentation. I have to tell you, this little bit of footage that I saw was way better and had more heart than any of the Transformers films that Michael Bay has made!
The Bumblebee movie looks like what the Transformers film franchise should have been all along. The movie was directed by Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) and you can tell that he brought that same sense of wonderful storytelling that we've seen in his Laika films to this Bumblebee movie, and if you're not excited, this is one Transformers film you should be excited about! Knight told the audience:
"I wanted to return to the essences of what made the transform franchise so impactful right from the beginning: character, emotion, spectacle and explosions, lots and lots of explosions."

(Aotn) Last week, we heard that the ‘Bumblebee‘ solo film had finally begun production. As the first spinoff film in the ‘Transformers‘ franchise, the team behind the the new solo films have talked openly about the importance of the ‘Bumblebee‘ movie. Although the franchise has grossed over 4.3 Billion worldwide, this film offers a turning point for the series in many ways. Especially when you consider each film has had diminishing returns from a box office perspective, the upcoming prequel needs to hit it out of the park to keep the franchise alive.
Based on our official first official look at Hailee Steinfeld‘s character “Charlie Watson”, this movie is certainly trying to differentiate itself as much as it possibly can from it’s predecessors. This is a good thing. It’s going to be interesting to finally see a someone else’s take on a ‘Transformers‘ film other than Michael Bay.

As production begins in the Transformers spin-off film Bumblebee, we have our first look at Hailee Steinfeld in the lead role of Charlie Watson. The actress posted the image on Twitter, and as you can see, she's sporting 80s-style punk look, which is the era that the film is set in. She's also teasing the character attitude with her look.
The story is set in the year 1987, where Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow Vw bug.
I've enjoyed the work film work that Steinfeld has been a part of and I'm sure she'll be great in the film, which also stars John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg, Jason Drucker, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow,...
