For nearly 40 years I have had an enjoyable and successful career as an actor. While I hope this will continue, I worry that Actors. Equity seems to be impeding the growth and development of the Australian film and television sector, where most of my work comes from. I have been an Equity member for all my career.
Until my recent resignation, I was an elected member of the National Performers. Committee (Npc) of the Equity division of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance trade union.
The Npc.s regular meetings, chaired by Equity President Simon Burke, are supposed to discuss .leading industrial and professional issues and the best course of action to take to ensure a strong and vibrant entertainment industry and a safe and fair workplace for performers.. As an ex-insider, I am not convinced that the Npc.s interpretation of .the best course of action. is necessarily in...

Toronto – New Zealand’s The Hobbit drama could yet be resolved with a first-time collective agreement between the country’s actor union and producers. Jennifer Ward-Lealand, president of Actors Equity New Zealand, was not available for comment Friday as she attended the 20th World Congress of the International Federation of Actors in Toronto. But Ward-Lealand has briefed Fia delegates this week on ongoing negotiations between the Screen Production and Development Association (Spada), representing New Zealand producers, and Actors Equity Nz on replacing the existing unenforceable “Pink Book” guidelines with possible rigid codes for actor fees and a share

The New Zealand government moved decisively to keep production of "The Hobbit" in that country, deploying two senior ministers to mediate a union dispute amid reports that co-financier Warner Bros. was actively exploring moving the production.
At the direction of Prime Minister John Key, economic development minister Gerry Brownlee and attorney general/arts minister Chris Finlayson met over the weekend with director-producer Peter Jackson and his wife and producing partner, Fran Walsh.
The venue remains unsettled as brinksmanship continues. Brownlee told the local press that it would be "wait and see" over the next couple of days, with Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Australia and the Czech Republic reportedly vying for the production.
Hobbit co-producer Philippa Boyens said Sunday that Warners was "running the numbers on five to six different locations. That's very real -- and that has put at risk the livelihoods of countless thousands of New Zealand industry workers."

In the latest episode of a battle that is already more epic than Bilbo Baggins’ encounter with the dragon Smaug, Peter Jackson claims the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance doesn’t care about the damage to the film and Nz’s industry, that its demands are “in fact illegal” and the union needs to “stop playing games”.
In response, the New Zealand Actors’ Equity says Jackson’s comments are evidence of the need for “a calm meeting” between the organisation and the film’s producers.
This is a statment from WingNut Films:
An Australian trade union, the Meaa, has generated a world wide actor boycott on The Hobbit, to bolster their demand that producers on the film enter into collective bargaining with the Nz Equity/Meaa. The Meaa has now admitted that their collective bargaining proposal is in fact, illegal, under New Zealand law.

A group of actors in New Zealand including "Lord of the Rings" star Karl Urban is urging movie bosses to end the ongoing stand-off over "The Hobbit" by holding talks with union representatives.
Hollywood bosses had planned to film "The Lord of the Rings" prequel in the country, but the shoot has been thrown into jeopardy after local unions instigated a boycott over the alleged "unfair treatment" of performers.
Union reps claim studio bosses refused to sign an agreement to uphold the rights of the actors, and other organizations in Britain, the U.S. and Canada have all backed the walk out. Studio executives have since announced they are considering scouting for a new location to avoid any trouble.

Four hundred actors attended the New Zealand Actors Equity meeting in Auckland last night, to discuss the minimum terms and conditions for work on The Hobbit.
“Our members are simply seeking fair and equitable employment terms and conditions for New Zealand actors [...] We all have the same goal in mind – to get The Hobbit made, here in New Zealand. Until we reach a fair and equitable solution, we recommend that all performers wait before accepting any engagement on The Hobbit,” said Nz Actors’ Equity president Jennifer Ward-Lealand.
The statement follows those of director Peter Jackson and the studios (New Line, Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures).

Auckland Festival’s cabaret stage in the famous Speigeltent will be home to actress Jennifer Ward-Lealand not once, but twice, as she performs two shows for the event. The Grey Lynn resident will be performing her sell-out Marlene Dietrich tribute show Falling in Love Again this Sunday in a mirror tent made in Europe. It stands right by the entrance to the Red Square in Aotea Square, the hub of the festival.
Ms Ward-Lealand has enjoyed playing Dietrich since starring in a play about the German cabaret star in 2003.
"After I did the play I realised, I can’t let this go. So I did some research."
