- Mark's father was the renowned mountain climber, high altitude researcher, and explorer Michael Ward. In 1951 he discovered the southern route to climb Mt. Everest via Nepal, and was the medical officer on the First Ascent in 1953. During the Reconnaissance Expedition of 1951, Michael Ward and Eric Shipton came across a trail of yeti footprints. Their photographs of these prints remain, to this day, the most compelling visual evidence for the existence of the so-called Abominable Snowman.
