Since making its debut at last year’s Fantasia Film Festival, New Life has garnered a lot of attention for its first-time writer/director John Rosman and his potentially apocalyptic chase film. I missed it during its festival run, but on the eve of its American release, I got my chance to rectify that and see if it lived up to its hype.
It starts like a conventional thriller, with a bloodied woman slipping through the streets of what looks like a typical American suburb, trying to avoid being seen. She lets herself into her house and cleans herself up. She barely managed to wash and change before she sees armed men in her kitchen. She lets herself out a window and, since they apparently never learned about guarding a perimeter,...

New Life is a drama that opens with a young woman, Jessie (Hayley Erin), running through the woods, head bleeding. She’s obviously escaping from someone or something, but we won’t find out why she’s in this pickle until about halfway through the film. What we next learn is that she’s trying to flee to safety in Canada. Meanwhile, some unidentified entity with extensive resources hires a first-rate tracker (Sonya Walger) to catch her before she can get to the border. Walger doesn’t learn who she’s actually working for or why they are so hell-bent on catching her until well into the film when we do.
Jessie seems like a nice young woman to viewers and to all she meets in her northward journey through rural areas. There’s suspense in who will help or harm her,...

Two years have gone by since we heard that Sonya Walger (For All Mankind) had signed on to star in the cat and mouse horror thriller New Life with Hayley Erin of Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, and Tony Amendola – who was in both the Conjuring Universe film Annabelle and the Conjuring Universe adjacent The Curse of La Llorona. It’s been seven months since JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols got to check the movie out at the Fantasia film festival, resulting in a 7/10 review you can read Here. But we only have one more month to wait until a wider audience is going to have the chance to see New Life. Brainstorm Media will be giving the film a VOD and limited theatrical release on May 3rd, and in anticipation of that release a full trailer has arrived online. You can watch it in the embed above.

Their two unique stories inextricably link, as the stakes of the pursuit rise to apocalyptic proportions. Soon it spirals toward a harrowing confrontation between the two women. She's on the run some kind of disease, but is there really a disease? Or something else. Also starring Sonya Walger and Tony Amendola. Reviews from last year say: "This piece of deeply moving, bittersweet, and terrifying horror filmmaking will embed...

Countdown to an adrenaline rush! The fast-moving fourth season of the alt-history drama, For All Mankind, set in a world where the space race never ended relaunches in the year 2003 with a harrowing mission commanded by brave astronaut Ed Baldwin (a further aged-up Joel Kinnaman), now the solar system’s gutsiest grandad. (Credit: Apple TV+) Eight years have passed since we last saw Ed, one of the first Americans in space during the 1960s. In the Season 3 finale, he transported his pregnant researcher daughter Kelly (Cynthy Wu) in a risky flight from the planet’s surface to an orbiting ship so she could give birth safely. He then got the shocking news that his ex-wife, entrepreneur Karen (Shantel VanSanten), had been killed by a terrorist bomb at the Johnson Space Center, along with the first American woman on the moon, Molly Cobb (Sonya Walger). Surviving the tragedy — but assumed dead...

For All Mankind has settled into life on Mars’ self-sustaining colony in the first trailer for Season 4, but a new space race to get the “most valuable known object in our solar system” has us worried about Ed Baldwin & Co. (But mostly Ed.)
“Rocketing into the new millennium in the eight years since Season 3, Happy Valley has rapidly expanded its footprint on Mars by turning former foes into partners,” reads the official synopsis. “Now 2003, the focus of the space program has turned to the capture and mining of extremely valuable, mineral-rich asteroids that could change the future of both Earth and Mars.

New Life is a low-key ground-floor beginning of-the-apocalypse thriller. A character-driven piece of one woman’s fight to evade capture and another woman’s race to find her. Told from two very uniquely distinctive perspectives worlds apart yet not so different.
As a lover of the “end of the world” genre I’m always keen to see projects dealing with the beginnings of the event. Yes, sometimes times they can be snooze fests like Side Effects but when done right you get movies like Outbreak. You could also go full musical and give the world Anna and the Apocalypse (my favourite Xmas movie). Where does New Life fit in though?
We follow Jessie (Hayley Erin) who after a chance meeting with a pooch that has recently escaped the lab, she unknowingly contracts a rare string of the Ebola virus.

Recently screened at Fantasia and now on its way to Frightfest, John Rosman’s New Life follows a woman called Jessica – and for the first 40 minutes or so, that’s all we know. It’s a film which packs in some major twists and turns. Plot: A mysterious woman on the run, and the resourceful fixer assigned to bring her in. Their two unique stories inextricably link, as the stakes of the pursuit rise to apocalyptic proportions.
Review: After 2020, it’s hard not to watch a movie about a deadly virus and be thrust back to that time. An indirect result of that year is a certain reality to any film involving a pandemic. Before, when things would ramp up in a movie like Outbreak, I’d often roll my eyes at how quickly things get out of control. But 2020 proved that we as a society care more about our comforts than keeping the world alive. With this in mind, New Life had me intrigued from the beginning, as there are few things that are scarier than an apocalyptic virus.

When For All Mankind Season 4 gets underway on Apple TV+, viewers will see less of one of its most popular stars.
TV Line reports that Jodi Balfour is bowing out of the alt-history drama as a series regular.
Balfour, who plays Ellen, is expected to appear in some capacity.
The series has said goodbye to some fantastic people over the years, and something tells us we'll be saying goodbye to more as the years in the narrative go on.
Ellen has been a key player since For All Mankind Season 1, and her presence has been felt throughout three glorious seasons.
Knowing that we'll be seeing less of her doesn't give us much excitement for For All Mankind Season 4.
As you'll recall, the criminally underrated series ended its third season by writing out Shantel VanSanten's Karen Baldwin and Sonya Walger's Molly Cobb.

John Rosman's "New Life" is a blistering multidimensional thriller that hits from all directions — the kind of debut filmmakers dream about. It messes with you psychologically, stokes existential dread, and drips with bodily liquids worth repulsive physical effects. Where some first features hinge on a sole signature that pulls audiences through less accomplished elements, "New Life" exposes few weaknesses. Rossman creates a small-scale apocalypse movie that becomes achingly intimate despite the threat of worldwide eradication, weighing the disease of one against the infection of many in ways unexplored by notable comparison points like Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later" or the Pastor brothers' "Carriers."
Sonya Walger stars as all-star fixer Elsa Gray, whose sunset years have been tainted by an Als diagnosis. Hayley Erin plays Jessica Murdock, a mysterious woman running from Elsa toward the Canadian border. It's all we know at the film's onset — Jessica is fleeing from an ailing special agent,...

When a film opens with an obviously frightened woman (Hayley Erin) trying to make her way across country without being seen, two things happen. Firstly, most people develop an immediate feeling of sympathy for her. Secondly, one starts to pay attention to the small things. What is she wearing? What is she carrying? What does she pay attention to? perhaps, somewhere in all this, there are clues which can tell us who she is and what’s going on.
If you pay the same kind of attention to her pursuer (Sonya Walger), one gesture will stand out early on: her hand cramping up as she’s sitting alone in her car. This is the first real clue we get as to the underlying theme of the film.
Given that the film is built upon layers of mystery which are peeled back one by one, one hesitates to say too much more about the plot,...

FlashForward was a TV show that was ahead of its time in many ways. The series premiered in 2009 and was based on a novel of the same name by Robert J. Sawyer. Joseph Fiennes, Courtney B. Vance, Sonya Walger, and John Cho all played leading characters. However, despite having an enthusiastic fan base, the show was cancelled after just one season and this was mostly as a result of poor ratings. One of the reasons why FlashForward was ahead of its time was its focus on science fiction and time travel with very few shows doing that at the same...

Only a handful of writers in television history have built a bona fide empire. Few who have done so have been women or PoC. Regardless of what you think of her shows, TV royalty Shonda Rhimes deserves respect for her groundbreaking success. Rhimes' workplace dramas have biting dialogue, steamy workplace affairs, and characters fighting tooth and nail to win. There's a passionate fandom surrounding her work, which makes the viewing experience doubly exciting.
With eleven shows underneath the "Shondaland" banner, it's not a surprise that not all of them are hits. Few contemporary shows have come anywhere close to matching the success of her first project, "Grey's Anatomy," and each subsequent series, in some way, has to contend with that legacy. But Rhimes is nothing if not prolific. Her career has only gotten more expansive since that first smash hit. Since moving from ABC to signing a deal with Netflix,...

We have to go back, /Film readers! Back to the Island filled with research stations, smoke monsters, birds that shout "Hurley!," eerie whispers, and mystical electromagnetic fields that heal paralysis. Although "Lost" premiered almost two decades ago, it left a lasting impact on television -- inspiring a plethora of mystery shows, including everything from ABC's "Flashforward" and Epix's "From." The ABC show fueled the audience's appetite for serialized and mystery-forward storytelling. Additionally, "Lost" launched the careers of many people involved -- not least of all "Watchmen" showrunner Damon Lindelof.
Looking back at "Lost," it's incredible to track where the show began and how its twists forever altered characters' fates. While the series occasionally meandered -- frustrating viewers with more questions than answers -- its characters were the show's beating heart. Let's take a trip down memory lane to revisit some old friends. Crank Petula Clark's "Downtown," climb on...

“For All Mankind,” Apple TV+’s popular alternative-history space drama series, was renewed Friday for a fourth season, it was revealed at Comic-Con. The news comes a little over a month after Season 3’s premiere.
“Since 1969, #ForAllMankind has journeyed from Earth to the Moon to Mars. The adventure will continue on Apple TV+,” the streamer’s Twitter account wrote.
In one giant leap for the series, “For All Mankind” has also toppled its streaming counterpart “Ted Lasso” as Apple TV+’s most in-demand show. Co-created by “Outlander’s” Ronald D. Moore as well as Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert, “For All Mankind” imagines a world where the global space race never ended, and the Soviets had placed the first human on the moon instead. Season 3 raced ahead in time to the early ’90s, with NASA, the Ussr and an unexpected new player within the private sector setting their sights on sending astronauts to Mars.
