Delivering series follow-ups to Jonathan Demme’s iconic “The Silence of the Lambs,” beloved kids projects “The Mighty Ducks” and “Saved by the Bell,” and Marvel Cinematic Universe characters all seem like daunting, if not impossible, challenges on the face of it.
Yet, in the burgeoning era of franchising, studios are digging deeper than ever into their IP mines. This results in old favorites needing to feel both familiar and new again, to captivate a broad audience. Much of that task fell to those who created the visual landscapes of series, including CBS’ “Clarice,” Peacock’s “Saved by the Bell” and Disney Plus’ “WandaVision.”
According to Maja Vrvilo, helming the pilot episode of “Clarice” was the most intimidating challenge of her career to date. “Being a fan of ‘Silence of the Lambs,’ it was incredibly exciting and incredibly terrifying at the same time,” she says.

Director Maja Vrvilo began her career as an editor, and her former job is consistently manifest in her economy of visual expression, impeccably calibrated pacing and use of montage to convey interior states. I first became aware of Vrvilo when she was directing on Hawaii Five-0, a series that made me sit up and take notice of her kinetic action staging and lively handling of actors. That led me to her episodes of Blindspot, MacGyver and other procedurals that all exhibited the sophisticated blocking and precise compositions I quickly realized were hallmarks of her filmmaking. If you’ve always wanted a deeper dive into the mind of The Silence of the Lambs‘ Clarice Starling, then CBS has a new show for you. Clarice, which takes place in 1993, aka a year after the events of The Silence of the Lambs, will tell the “untold personal story” of Clarice Starling as she returns to the field. In the new CBS show, the very hard work of catching serial murderers and sexual predators will be made even more complicated by the high-stakes political world of D.C. The series comes from Star Trek‘s Alex Kurtzman and Rachel Getting Married‘s Jenny Lumet, and the first episode was directed by Maja Vrvilo, whom you may recognize from her recent, excellent work from both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard. Basically, Clarice is a new TV show to look out for—whether you are a fan of Thomas Harris’ work or not.

Exclusive: The Resident executive producer Elizabeth Klaviter has joined the newly picked-up CBS drama series Clarice, from Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, as executive producer/showrunner.
Klaviter will serve as day-to-day showrunner on the Silence of the Lambs sequel starring Rebecca Breeds, working alongside executive producers Kurtzman and Lumet, who wrote the pilot episode and will continue to have hands-on creative involvement.
Clarice was one of two CBS dramas, along with The Equalizer, to receive a straight-to-series pickup this month after their pilots could not be produced due to the coronavirus pandemic. Along with other 2020 CBS pilots, Clarice got an order for a second script. The high-profile drama also had previously opened a mini writers room to break stories for the pilot.

The upcoming Clarice Starling series at CBS has added two more cast members.
Lucca de Oliveira and Devyn A. Tyler have both joined the show, which received a series commitment at the network in January. It follows follows FBI Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) in the aftermath of the events of “Silence of the Lambs” as she hunts down new serial murderers and sexual predators while also navigating the political world of Washington D.C.
Oliveira will star as Tomas Esquivel. The character attended Dartmouth on an Rotc scholarship and became a counter-sniper during Operation Desert Storm. He is initially suspicious of Clarice, and her singular background in the Bureau. Esquivel has gone through his own kind of hazing, and is torn between his love of service, and his belief that the FBI needs to shake off its old school mentality.

It was a dark and stormy night. At least in the strange dream that opened “The Impossible Box,” a dream Soji’s been experiencing for some time and may hold the key to where she really comes from.
It was also a dark and stormy episode of “Star Trek: Picard.” “The Impossible Box” pushed the narrative forward considerably after the rip-roaring detour of Seven of Nine’s rampage the previous week. But it did so not through explosive action but instead through thoughtful character turns: it feels like a lot more happened here than really did, and even those seismic events are moments we could have called well in advance — Soji realizing she’s a synth, Narek getting what he wants from her then, at last, casting her aside, Picard setting foot on a Borg cube once more. But what’s striking is that even though we saw all these moments coming episodes ago,...

We talked to Star Trek: Discovery's Mary Wiseman about her role in the first Short Treks mini-episode.
Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) is one of Star Trek: Discovery's most likeable and relatable characters, which is why it's no surprise that Tilly is the focus of the franchise's first of four planned Short Treks, mini-episodes set in the world of Discovery.
In "Runaway," available to watch via CBS All-Access now, Tilly encounters an alien stowaway named Po (Yadira Guevara-Prip) who has come aboard Discovery illegally. Over the course of the 15-minute episode, Tilly helps Po stay off the radar and decide what she wants from her future. In the process, Tilly's own future ambitions are affirmed. Basically, it's great.

Mary Wiseman knows just how unusual Cadet Sylvia Tilly, the character she plays on “Star Trek: Discovery,” is to the “Star Trek” universe. “There are things about her that can maybe, to some people, feel like too much,” she told IndieWire. “Or she’s too nervous, or she doesn’t have that sort of gravitas and professionalism that other characters have.”
But she’s been genuinely pleased by the way people have embraced the ambitious yet jittery cadet, and the way “people have seen that character and felt seen by that character. They’ve kind of opened their arms to her, and it’s also opening their arms to me, which is a really beautiful, heartening experience.”

Star Trek: Discovery introduced Starfleet fans to a new ship, a new mission and new crew when it premiered a year ago this week on CBS All Access. The second season won’t get underway until January but that doesn’t mean the voyage is in limbo — the mission continues in the off-season thanks to four stand-alone short films that begin rolling out October 4. The trailer just landed for Runaway, the first of those 10- to 15-minute mini-movies. It spotlights Ensign Tilly (Mary Wiseman), who encounters an unexpected visitor in need of help.
Check out the trailer above.
Maja Vrvilo directed the short, which was written by Jenny Lumet and Alex Kurtzman. Kurtzman is also Discovery’s co-creator (with Bryan Fuller) and show runner. Kurtzman has described the short films as a way to “deliver closed-ended stories while revealing clues about what’s to come in future Star Trek: Discovery episodes.

CBS All Access has big, big plans for the Star Trek franchise, and don’t we know all about it.
In the immediate future, we have the second season of Discovery to look forward to, which will bring with it the introduction of new versions of Spock, Captain Pike and more, while also promising a lighter tone and more cheerfulness amongst the crew, after the grim and dark rookie outing.

From what we understand, the individuals who’ll take the spotlight in these shorts are Mary Wiseman (Tilly), Doug Jones (Saru) and Rainn Wilson (Harry Mudd), along with a...
