Actor Mark-Paul Gosselaar was a teen heartthrob on the NBC sitcom Saved by the Bell. While it’s been more than a few years since Gosselaar’s day on the show, the character still follows him around today. In recent years, Gosselaar has spoken out about some of the regrets he still harbors regarding some of the show’s more questionable scenes.
Despite his reservations, Gosselaar should show himself a little grace, as should his fans, given that he was just 15 years old when the first episode of Saved by the Bell aired. Here’s a look at the ’90s teen sitcom and Gosselaar’s love-hate relationship with some of the show’s storylines.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar admitted at ’90s Con Tampa (via Entertainment Weekly) that he brought his work home with him in a negative way while filming the short-lived Fox drama series “Pitch.” The “Saved by the Bell” alum starred in the show as a veteran baseball player who butts heads with and befriends a young teammate who happens to be the first woman to play in the MLB. Gosselaar said after filming episodes he’d go home and his “really aggressive baseball player” would stay with him.
“That’s a role though, that I don’t make light of it, but I had to go therapy with my wife,” he revealed. “I’d come in through that front door and like my wife said in therapy sessions, ‘That’s not the guy I married.’ And you’re playing this guy and then the next day, you have to jump right into that.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar appeared on the “Pod Meets World” podcast and spoke about how tough it can be to revisit outdated episodes of “Saved by the Bell,” on which he starred as Zack Morris. The series aired on NBC for four seasons and 86 episodes from 1989 to 1992. In the show’s second episode, “The Lisa Card,” Zack charges boys in school to kiss Lisa (Lark Voorhies) for $1 so she can get money to pay her dad back after she exceeds his credit card limit.
“There was one where I was basically whoring out Lisa Turtle,” Gosselaar said. “I charged people to kiss her without her consent. That was a tough one.”
In another episode, Zack pretends to be Native American and wears a “a full headdress.”
“There’s things that you just would not film nowadays,” Gosselaar said. “There are things every single episode that we could pick out. At that point,...

No more pencils, no more books. No more Saved By The Bell, either, as the rebooted sitcom’s cancellation by Peacock is now in effect.
It comes only a month after the comedy won Outstanding Comedy Series at the GLAAD Media Awards. It’s also something of a surprise, in that the first season of the show reportedly did well for the streamer. The reboot featured a new class of kids at Bayside High and the return of series originals Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, Elizabeth Berkley, Mario Lopez and Lark Voorhies, who was a guest star in a season one episode.
So far, only Gosselaar has taken to social media to express his views on the cancellation. We’ll update as more come in.
So disappointed by this news. So many talented individuals in all departments creating something original from a reboot. Respect and admiration to everyone involved and thanks to the viewers.

Saved by the Bell paid tribute to Dustin Diamond during today's season premiere.
Samuel "Screech" Powers' former friends joined forces at The Max to honor their late friend.
Diamond died in February of lung cancer at 44 years old.
Screech was not a part of the freshman season of the reboot, but the series teased that he moved to the International Space Station with his robot companion Kevin.
The episode picks up with Zack and Slater talking in the Bayside High School's parking lot, and we learn that Morris lost his re-election bid for governor of California to Prince Harry.
“Anyways, it doesn’t matter. Worst things happened this year,” Zack tells his friend before asking:
“Are you going to the thing at The Max?"
“I don’t know. I’ll have to see," Slater responds.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Saved by the Bell, Season 2, Episode 1.] Saved by the Bell is back and paying tribute to one of its vets as the original stars honor former colleague Dustin Diamond, who famously portrayed Screech. Now, Peacock‘s revival has brought together original cast members Mario Lopez, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, and Lark Voorhies for a memorial of sorts. The installment focused on the Bayside High kids returning to school following virtual learning during the pandemic. (Credit: Everett Collection) While the students are busy making up for lost time, the adults are dealing with some serious problems, including combating depression. It’s clear from the start of the installment that coach Slater (Lopez) is working through a tough time as he attempts to push physical activity as...

Even admirers of the movie “Showgirls” can concede that it was not a movie with its star’s best interests in mind.
The 1995 box-office bomb was, in its moment, pilloried for its indulgent taste for sleaze; with some distance, it’s possible to see it as director Paul Verhoeven’s lovingly manic embrace of American trash culture. But re-evaluating the movie hasn’t rescued the prospects of its star, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, who as recently as last year said she was “bullied” for the role and made “a pariah in the industry I had worked so hard for.”
For all the glee that imbues “Showgirls,” there’s a bummer of a story at its center: Berkley Lauren (who at the time of “Showgirls” just went by Berkley) won worst actress at the mean-spirited Razzie Awards and had limited future prospects. Coming off her role on the teen show “Saved by the Bell,...

Diamond’s agent confirmed the actor’s death.
“We are saddened to confirm of Dustin Diamond’s passing on Monday, February 1st, 2021 due to carcinoma,” his reps at Roger Paul Inc. said in a statement. “He was diagnosed with this brutal, relentless form of malignant cancer only three weeks ago. In that time, it managed to spread rapidly throughout his system; the only mercy it exhibited was its sharp and swift execution. Dustin did not suffer. He did not have to lie submerged in pain. For that, we are grateful.”
The statement also alluded to Diamond’s various controversies, noting that the actor, who had released a self-produced sex tape, wrote a tell-all book...

Former “Saved By the Bell” star Dustin Diamond has been hospitalized with an as-yet undiagnosed illness, TheWrap has confirmed.
TMZ first reported the news on Tuesday that Diamond was hospitalized in Florida over the weekend “after feeling pain all over his body and a general sense of unease.” Representatives for the actor later told E! News that doctors believe a cancer diagnosis is “likely,” but tests are still being conducted to determine the cause.
A spokesperson for the actor confirmed to TheWrap that Diamond has been hospitalized but was unable to provide any update on his condition.

The first 10-episode season of “Saved by the Bell,” from showrunner Tracey Wigfield, introduces a new class of students, some of whom are Bayside legacies and some of whom literally step through the doors for the first time in the pilot episode after their underfunded school is shut down and they are transferred — thanks to Governor Zack Morris’ (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) poor planning. No, they’re not the stars of Peacock’s Saved by the Bell revival (premiering Wednesday, Nov. 25). And no, they’re most certainly not part of the original series cast. One week out from a new semester at Bayside, Peacock has released the Saved by the Bell revival’s opening title sequence, complete with a retooled version of the original series’ theme song.
Grammy nominated rapper Lil Yachty puts his own spin on the classic tune, which blends old school and new school. The new track opens with the sound of the iconic school bell, and utilizes many of the same lyrics, but ditches the electric guitars and saxophone for a decidedly more electronic tone.

Exclusive: Time out! Bayside High is about to take over Peacock. The streaming service is set to launch a new Saved by the Bell channel on November 16 ahead of the reimagining of the classic Saturday morning show, which will debut on November 25.
The channel will available on Peacock for free and include over 100 episodes from the original Saved by the Bell series, Saved by the Bell: The College Years, Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style, and Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Vegas. It will be non-stop Bayside fun with Zack, Kelly, Slater, Jessie, Lisa and Screech to keep you satisfied until the revival makes it big premiere.
In the new series, Mark-Paul Gosselaar reprises his role as Zack Morris. His charmingly scheming ways have paved the road for him to become the governor of California. True to Zack Morris form, he is in hot water for closing too many underfunded high schools.

Either someone really did a lot of emailing to the network or something else lined up just perfectly since now all those articles that were written by so many people about Lark Voorhies not making the trip back to Bayside are kind of defunct since she’s going to be hitting the scene as a successful fashion designer and, of course, as her original character Lisa Turtle. Does this mean that Dustin Diamond might actually get a call to come back for one reason or another? How many think that fans of the old show are actually going to want that

You’re next, Screech. Ok, so we seriously doubt that, but Peacock said on Thursday Lark Voorhies will make a “special appearance” as former Bayside High fashionista Lisa Turtle on its upcoming “Saved by the Bell” reboot series.

Fans of the original “Saved by the Bell” will probably remember the salacious purported tell-all book “Behind the Bell” penned by Dustin Diamond, who played Samuel “Screech” Powers on the teen series. “Behind the Bell” was poorly received by the rest of the “Sbtb” cast — and by book critics.
Diamond has since expressed regret over “Behind the Bell.”

Lark Voorhies, who played Lisa Turtle in the original “Saved by the Bell,” will reprise the role for a special appearance in the new Peacock series.
The NBC streaming platform released a first-look image of the actor back in character on set. She joins Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley as members of the original cast slated to return for the new show.
The new series follows a group of students at Bayside High, a well-funded school for students from upper-class and lower-class families. The main cast of students includes Belmont Cameli, Dexter Darden, Mitchell Hoog, Alycia Pascual-Peña, Josie Totah and Haskiri Velazquez.
Earlier this year, Voorhies shared on “The Dr. Oz Show” that not being included alongside other original cast members left her upset. She also suggested that her diagnosis with bipolar disorder, which was the focus of her chat with Dr. Oz, could have played a role in her exclusion.

Another Saved by the Bell alum has been confirmed to appear in the forthcoming revival.
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Lark Voorhies will return as Lisa Turtle.
She joins former cast members Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Zack), Tiffani Thiessen (Kelly), Mario Lopez (Slater), and Elizabeth Berkley Lauren (Jessie).
This means that Dustin Diamond's Screech is the only lead original cast member to not have a role in the new series.
Given events of recent years, don't expect Diamond to be a part of the show, either.
If the new series wants to address him, it will likely be a comment in passing about what became of the beloved character. .
Recasting such a pivotal character would probably not go down well with fans.
EW did not reveal whether Voorhies is back in a recurring capacity or a guest star, but it notes that Lisa is “thriving with a successful career in fashion.

There’s a saying about burning bridges and how tough it is to build them up again, but it escapes me at the moment since watching Dustin Diamond’s behavior outside of Saved by the Bell makes it pretty clear why he wasn’t given the invite to come back. The actor, who played Samuel "Screech" Powers on the original series, told TMZ that nobody has reached out to him about appearing in the Peacock series.
“Out of all the cast members, I was in… the most [episodes], and that’s not the case anymore if I’m not in the new one,” Diamond said.
“And how do you have Saved by the Bell without Screech, right? … We should all be a part of this.”
Diamond even offered up a pitch of what Screech would be up to in the new series:
“Screech should be dealing with parenthood and dealing with his kids, and finding out that… maybe he wasn’t a barrel full of roses to deal with growing up.”

It does appear to be a pretty big slight that Lark Voorhies has had to endure by not being invited back for the Saved by the Bell reboot, but in some way it’s hard to feel sorry for her. Like it or not it could easily be due to whatever issues she’s been having throughout the years, be it schizophrenia or bipolar disorder as was mentioned by Jeremy Dick of TVWeb. There’s no need to make fun of her for this since mental issues tend to be pretty serious depending on their severity and what’s going on with the individual.

“I have to admit I did feel a bit slighted and hurt when I was not invited to be part of the Saved by the Bell reunion, as well as other cast members events,” she read from a journal entry on The Dr. Oz Show. “Yet, of course, I also realized that having this puzzling disorder may have played a major part in that factual decision. With that in mind, I am truly thankful for having had the chance to work on a show that has been so successful.
