Washington — Several weeks after overseeing the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, then-cia Director Leon Panetta revealed the name of the raid commander in a speech attended by the writer of the film "Zero Dark Thirty," according to a draft report by Pentagon investigators.
Under security rules, the commander's name was not to be made public, but the draft report did not say whether Panetta knew a member of the public was in his audience at CIA headquarters. A former CIA official familiar with the event said Wednesday that Panetta did not know of the writer's presence; if the disclosure was inadvertent it would not constitute a violation of the rules by Panetta.
The former official spoke on condition of anonymity because a security issue was involved.
The unpublished draft report was first disclosed by the Project on Government Oversight and confirmed by Rep. Peter King, who asked for the investigation nearly two years ago.

Billed as a Barack Obama election fillip, Kathryn Bigelow's tale of the hunt for Bin Laden quickly became political dynamite
When the Obama re-election machine began gearing up last winter, its presumed winning formula had the brevity of a high-concept Hollywood pitch: "General Motors is alive, Osama bin Laden is dead."
The mantra's first part received an unexpected iteration during half-time at the Super Bowl when, in an ad promoting the Us car industry, no less an icon than Clint Eastwood told the huge TV audience that Detroit had weathered the Great Recession and was coming back. (Apparently unaware he'd been cast as Obama's surrogate, the star would make amends by grotesquely lecturing the president during the Republican convention.) Meanwhile, the mantra's second part was also in the works, in the form of Kathryn Bigelow's big-budget thriller about Bin Laden's assassination; not yet named Zero Dark Thirty, the...

A Senate panel is examining the correspondences between CIA officials and the makers of the new Osama bin Laden manhunt film Zero Dark Thirty, Reuters reports. The investigation will specifically look into whether the CIA gave director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal "inappropriate" access to secret material, and also whether members of the spy agency were responsible for the portrayal of brutal interrogation techniques and the implication that they were effective.

Washington Jan 2 (Reuters) - After the Senate Intelligence Committee's chairwoman expressed outrage over scenes that imply "enhanced interrogations" of CIA detainees produced a breakthrough in the hunt for Osama bin Laden, the panel has begun a review of contacts between the makers of the film "Zero Dark Thirty" and CIA officials.
In the latest controversy surrounding the film, Reuters has learned that the committee will examine records charting contacts between intelligence officials and the film's director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal.
Investigators will examine whether the spy agency gave the filmmakers "inappropriate" access to secret material, said a person familiar with the matter. Washington -- The Pentagon says its top intelligence official, who has been mentioned as a possible candidate to be the next CIA director, is under investigation in connection with information he provided to makers of a movie about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.
Pentagon press secretary George Little said Tuesday evening that the investigation of Michael Vickers is being conducted by the Pentagon's inspector general.
Vickers is the undersecretary of defense for intelligence.
Little said Vickers only provided unclassified information to the makers of the movie "Zero Dark Thirty," and that the session was arranged in July 2011 by the Pentagon's office of public affairs.
Little said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has full confidence in Vickers.

The hunt for who may have shared sensitive military information with the makers of Zero Dark Thirty is apparently still in full effect. A report being prepared by a U.S. Defense Department investigator is said to criticize Pentagon official Michael Vickers for giving director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal, et al., too many top-secret details, particularly the identity of a member of Seal Team 6, albeit not one who actually participated in the raid that took out Osama bin Laden last year in Pakistan, according to ABC News. Bigelow's follow-up to The Hurt Locker had been in the works for many years with what was literally a less-Hollywood ending in mind and the actual...

New York — Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal were knee-deep in preparing the follow-up to their Oscar-winning "The Hurt Locker," a film that would chronicle the manhunt for Osama bin Laden, his escape in Tora Bora and the vanishing trail of the world's most wanted man.
"Then history changed," says Bigelow.
After a team of Navy SEALs killed bin Laden in his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on May 2 last year, the director Bigelow and Boal, a journalist turned screenwriter, set about remaking their film. Whereas most films start with a concept or a dramatic arc, Boal and Bigelow built "Zero Dark Thirty" one source at a time, piecing together a narrative out of recent history shrouded in secrecy.
The approach – a marriage of Boal's reporting and Bigelow's visceral action – has made "Zero Dark Thirty" a lightning rod. Though Sony's Columbia Pictures won't release it until Dec. 19 in New York and Los...

It turns out the CIA and Pentagon officials were just big fans of The Hurt Locker.
New documents pertaining to government and military cooperation on the Osama bin Laden takedown film Zero Dark Thirty (out Dec. 19) were posted Tuesday evening by the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch, but they fail to confirm the organization’s theory that director Kathryn Bigelow and producer-screenwriter Mark Boal were given special access for the sake of political gains.
In fact, media relations officials discussed the need to be fair to others who were seeking similar information about the May 2, 2011 raid — and they told each...

Obama administration under fire for granting access to Hollywood film-makers in apparent violation of official policy
The Obama administration is under fire for granting Hollywood film-makers clandestine access to the Navy Seal team that killed Osama bin Laden in apparent violation of official policy.
Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal were given unprecedented information about the 2011 raid to help them make Zero Dark Thirty, a forthcoming film about the event.
Documents released under freedom of information laws showed the Pentagon and CIA divulged secret information about the commando unit, known as Seal Team Six, which killed the September 11 mastermind.
The filmmakers were shown a classified facility, whose name was redacted in the released documents, and toured CIA vaults. They were also shown the CIA's replica of Bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
Peter King, the Republican chairman of the Congressional Homeland Security committee, said on Wednesday the documents...

Apparently Rep. Peter King was on to something when he raised concerns back in January about director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Marl Boal potentially being leaked classified material to make their upcoming Osama bin Laden movie. According to a report from Judicial Watch, Bigelow and Boal were given unprecedented access by the CIA to make "Zero Dark Thirty," a film that tells the story of the hunt for the world's most wanted man. Documents obtained by the foundation through the Freedom of Information Act show that the filmmakers were allowed to meet with -- and learn the identity of -- a "planner, Operator and Commander of Seal Team Six,” the team responsible for the capture and killing of bin Laden. A meeting transcription states that Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Michael Vickers told Boal and Bigelow, “The only thing we ask is that you not reveal his name in...

Washington -- Obama administration officials made "a planner, operator and commander of Seal Team Six" that killed Osama bin Laden available to a Hollywood director and screenwriter working on a movie about the successful raid, according to Pentagon and CIA records obtained by the conservative group Judicial Watch.
The group released hundreds of pages of documents on Tuesday, secured under a Freedom of Information Act request, that it says show transcripts of meetings and communication between government agencies, Kathryn Bigelow, the Academy Award-winning director of "The Hurt Locker," and screenwriter Mark Boal.
Rep. Peter King (R-n.Y.), chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, said in a statement Wednesday that the emails tell a "damning story of extremely close, unprecedented, and potentially dangerous collaboration" with top officials at the CIA, Department of Defense and the White House, as well as with a top Democratic lobbying firm, the Glover Park Group.
