Anderson Cooper has spent much of his career roaming the globe, documenting the kind of stories few others are eager to cover — disease, natural disasters, genocide, war. Comfort has never been his mainstay.
But he has his moments.
In 2008, Cooper traveled to Cameroon for the CNN docuseries Planet in Peril, looking for bush hunters whom epidemiologists were following in their study of viruses that jump from animals to humans, with his longtime executive producer Charlie Moore, CNN chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta and Gupta’s producer.
Their temporary headquarters was a ramshackle hut deep in the jungle with no cell service. Once there, they split up to find bush hunters and made a plan to reunite at the hut. Gupta and his producer returned, but didn’t find Cooper and Moore there, and worried all night about his friends in the wild. Only the next day did he wake up...

Anderson Cooper is remembering his brother, Carter, on the 35th anniversary of his death.
The 56-year-old CNN anchor took to Instagram to share a set of photos of Carter, then a child, starting the slideshow with a black-and-white photo of the pair. Anderson also included two solo shots of his older brother — one of him as a kid and a photo of Carter as a teen.
“It is 35 years today since my brother, Carter Cooper, died. I think of him, and miss him, every day,” Anderson captioned the post.
Anderson’s post was met with lots of love in the comments, including from his CNN colleagues, with commentator Ana Navarro-Cárdenas writing, “These days are so very hard. The pain dulls but the absence never goes away.”
Family friend and fashion designer, Diane von Furstenberg also commented on the post, adding, “He protects you Anderson .”

My mother died on Sept. 29. I don’t know how to grieve.
I cried when she took her last breath. I cried a couple of days later when I eulogized Arlene Malkin from the pulpit of a Long Island funeral home in front of about 75 friends and family members.
The crying actually began about six months before, when my mother was put in hospice care. She wasn’t admitted to a facility but taken care of at home. In her own bed. There was nothing more to be done. There would be no more doctor visits or trips to emergency rooms. The poking, prodding and testing were to stop.
I traveled back and forth between New York and Los Angeles several times during her final months. As my mother’s health deteriorated, I told her on many occasions that it was Ok to go if she wanted to. She no longer had to hold on.

10. “Nanny McPhee” (2005)
Angela Lansbury has often projected an air of menace, as she does playing the near-sighted great-aunt of the newly motherless Brown children in Kirk Jones’ family film. The tightwad meanie gets her comeuppance at a wedding featuring green-frosted cake.
9. “Death on the Nile” (1978)
In this successful adaptation of an Agatha Christie classic, Lansbury plays a romance novelist who might have based one of her characters a little too closely on the murder victim at the center of Hercule Poirot’s investigation
8. “Little Gloria … Happy at Last” (1982)
In this NBC miniseries, based on Gloria Vanderbilt’s best-selling memoir, Lansbury plays the teenage heiress’ aunt who conspires to seize custody of the girl (and her fortune) from her mother. Lansbury earned her first Emmy nomination for the role.
7. “National Velvet” (1944)
In only her second film, Lansbury played the older sister of Elizabeth Taylor’s horse-loving English girl who trains a gelding into a champion.

Anderson Cooper will debut a new CNN Audio podcast that will be devoted to exploring loss and grief.
All There Is with Anderson Cooper will premiere on Sept. 14.
According to the network, Cooper began recording the podcast alone during his final weeks packing up the apartment of his mother Gloria Vanderbilt. He found unopened boxes belonging to his late father and brother, and overwhelmed by the experience, he began to record intimate conversations with others about coping with grief. Among those who share their experiences are Stephen Colbert, Molly Shannon and Laurie Anderson.
In a statement, Cooper said, “I’ve often felt isolated and alone in grief and yet it is something all of us will experience in our lives. It’s helped me tremendously to hear from others on how they move forward in the face of loss, and I hope it helps listeners of this podcast as well.

UCP and Littleton Road are developing “Vanderbilt,” a new series based on Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe’s book, “Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty.”
Patrick Macmanus, “Dr. Death” showrunner and “The Girl From Plainville” co-creator, will write and executive produce the project. Cooper and Littleton Road’s Kelly Funke will also executive produce.
“I am honored, grateful and thrilled to be teaming with Anderson on this sweeping story,” says Macmanus. “His book cut to the quick of four hundred years of American history with care and honesty, never shying away from the Vanderbilt family’s all-too-human faults and frailties. I am eager and just the right amount of nervous about getting this one right.”
The 2021 book, a New York Times best seller, “Vanderbilt” explores the birth of an American Dynasty and the arrival of Jan Aertsen Vanderbilt as an indentured servant.

After just three weeks on the market, and an unusually long four-month contract period, the longtime New York City home of late and legendary American aristocrat Gloria Vanderbilt has been sold by her surviving son, veteran CNN anchor Anderson Cooper. The buyer is powerhouse film producer Amy Pascal, who wanted the place with enough fervor that she paid $2.5 million, more than twice its $1.125 million asking price.
The former chair of Sony Pictures, who now heads up Pascal Pictures, where she produced the superhero blockbuster Spider-Man: Homecoming and received Oscar nominations for The Post and Little Women, shelled out another $950,000 for a ground-floor apartment that Vanderbilt used as an art studio, which brought her total outlay to almost $3.5 million. And no wonder Pascal loved it so much. It’s as unique and ebullient as her magnificent mane of kinky curly hair.

“Let It Be” director Michael Lindsay-Hogg couldn’t be happier with Peter Jackson’s “Get Back,” the three-part, nearly eight-hour miniseries made up of outtakes from his original Beatles documentary, which arrived on Disney Plus two weeks ago to much fanfare.
Now 81, living in Hudson, NY, with his wife and three dogs, and mostly painting, Lindsay-Hogg is hoping Apple Corps will make good on its promise to re-release “in some form” his oft-misunderstood original, which had always been seen in light of the Beatles’ acrimonious split just before it finally came out in 1970.
“For years I’ve been agitating with Apple to re-release ‘Let It Be,’” says Lindsay-Hogg. “It’s been about to happen for the past 20 years. I’m very fond of the people there, but all the internal foolishness got in the way.”

Looks like his time hosting The Mole paid off! Turns out, there's another side of Anderson Cooper's career the world didn't know about. During an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Tuesday, Oct. 26, the famed journalist revealed that he moonlighted as his mother Gloria Vanderbilt's social media assistant, prior to her death in 2019. When the Anderson Cooper 360 host realized that the then 91-year-old—who had been a model, an author and, most famously, a jeans designer— was becoming a bit depressed, he suggested starting an Instagram account to encourage her to get back to working on and selling her art. Gloria agreed, saying the platform was like...

Anderson Cooper is the first to admit his late mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, was “kind of nutty” — and he’s got the story to prove it.
While appearing on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” Thursday night, Cooper opened up for the first time about how his mother, who died in July 2019 at age 95, once offered to carry a baby for him. It all started when Vanderbilt, then 85, told Cooper about a visit to her gynecologist.
“She told me the most amazing thing. She told me I could still bear a child,” the CNN anchor recalled his mom telling him.
At first, Cooper, who was not yet a parent at the time, thought his mom wanted to try to get pregnant again. But Vanderbilt had another idea in mind.

When Truman Capote died in 1984, he left the remains of a novel he had been hatching for nearly two decades, and talking about for almost as long. Answered Prayers, the story of a budding writer screwing his way through polite society, was intended to be Capote’s most explosive achievement. Anderson Cooper took to Instagram on Wednesday to pay tribute to his late mother Gloria Vanderbilt. "My mom, @gloriavanderbilt, died one year ago today," the CNN anchor began. "She is alive in my heart and in the hearts of all who knew her and loved her." Cooper went on to write about how his mom "had an extraordinary and indomitable spirit, grit, determination, passion, and vulnerability." "She experienced great love and horrific tragedies, but she never lost her almost childlike optimism; her openness to the world around her," he continued. "She chose to remain vulnerable. Others would have closed off their hearts, protected themselves. My mom wanted to see and hear...

Before her passing, Gloria Vanderbilt had an inkling that her son was going to be a dad. Just a few short days after Anderson Cooper announced the birth of his baby boy, the CNN anchor sat down with his close friend to share just how many people knew about his plans. During an appearance on Monday's Live With Kelly and Ryan, co-host and Bff Kelly Ripa admitted she she "can actually picture the joyful expression on [Gloria's] face knowing that you have this baby." Anderson couldn't help but agree with the sentiment. "Yah, I was able to tell her shortly before she died that I was going to have a baby and [my son] Wyatt hadn't been created at that point, was not a...

The 71st Emmy Awards featured a major gaffe during the In Memoriam tribute when a photo of living composer Leonard Slatkin was used to honor the late André Previn. The Television Academy issued the following statement reacting to the In Memoriam segment error: “The producers for the 71st Emmy Awards, the Television Academy and Fox sincerely apologize for this error. All In Memoriam mentions on the Television Academy’s website feature accurate imagery for Mr. Previn.”
Previn was nominated for 11 Academy Awards throughout his career, winning the Best Original Score prize for “Gigi,” “Porgy and Bess,” “Irma la Douce,” and “My Fair Lady.” Additional movies composed by Previn include “All in a Night’s Work,” “Designing Woman,” “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” and “Paint Your Wagon.” The composer passed away in February at the age of 89. The Fox broadcast of the Primetime Emmys on Sunday featured the usual In Memoriam segment, this year highlighted by Halsey’s live rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time.” It also showed the wrong picture of composer Andre Previn during the montage of photos accompanying the song.
Previn is the four-time Oscar-winning composer and conductor who died in February at age 89. But the photo shown was that of fellow Grammy-winning composer Leonard Slatkin, who is 75, very much alive and currently Music Director Laureate of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Directeur Musical Honoraire of the Orchestre National de Lyon.
Slatkin, whose Hollywood credits include working on the music for Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One and A Capitol Fourth while conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra, took the high road Monday about the gaffe on Twitter.
I saw that @theemmys posted a photo of me "In Memoriam" rather than the intended Andre Previn.

As part of Sunday night’s In Memoriam tribute at the 2019 Emmy Awards, Halsey performed a version of Cyndi Lauper’s 1983 classic “Time After Time,” over a montage of television stars who died over the past year.
Introduced by actress Regina King, the singer performed accompanied only by a pianist and honored Katherine Helmond, Tim Conway, Gloria Vanderbilt, Penny Marshall, Luke Perry, Peter Fonda, Stan Lee, Rip Torn, and many others. The awards received some criticism online for omitting Peter Tork of the 1960s rock-group comedy “The Monkees.”
Halsey’s next album, “Manic,” is due in January.
While two shows that ended last season, “Game of Thrones” and “Veep,” were expected to win big, only the former did — at Sunday’s ceremony, “Game of Thrones” won the drama series trophy and supporting drama actor for Peter Dinklage, while “Veep” was shut out.

Norah O’Donnell is the new anchor of “CBS Evening News,” though she’s not off to a particularly hot start.
Her July 15, 2019 debut drew 1.221 million viewers ages 25-54 — the key demographic for news programming — which was down 24% versus the same night last year. O’Donnell’s total-viewer decline was much less dramatic, down just 1%, which was also less of a decline than ABC and NBC experienced year to year.
Compared with the show’s 2019-to-date ratings, the Jeff Glor days, O’Donnell’s summer kickoff was down 22% in the demo and 6% among total viewers. Versus Glor’s final week, O’Donnell’s first show dropped 19% in the key demo. The two versions were steady in total viewers.

Anderson Cooper honored his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, on CNN Monday morning, following the death of the fashion designer, actress and socialite at the age of 95.
“Gloria Vanderbilt, my mom, lived her entire life in the public eye,” Cooper says, narrating the obituary package. “Born in 1924, her father, Reginald Vanderbilt, was heir to the Vanderbilt Railroad fortune but gambled away most of his inheritance and died when my mom was just a baby.”
Later in the almost seven-minute video Cooper says: “I always thought of her as a visitor from another world, a traveler stranded here who had come from a distant star that burned out long ago. I always felt it was my job to try to protect her. She was the strongest person I’ve ever met, but she wasn’t tough, she never developed a thick skin to protect herself from hurt. She wanted to feel it all.

Gloria Vanderbilt, a famous model and socialite who was often a subject of fascination in the worlds of fashion and media, has died at 95, according to a report on CNN, where her son, anchor Anderson Cooper, has worked for several years.
From a young age, Vanderbilt led a tumultuous life, one marked by a heated custody battle over her and her inheritance when she was young, and filled with marriages and business ventures as she grew older. “She lived her entire life in the public eye,” Cooper said in a video obituary that aired on CNN Monday.
Vanderbilt was the only daughter of railroad magnate Reginald Vanderbilt and his second wife. As such, she and a half-sister, Cathleen Vanderbilt, each stood to inherit a share in a trust after the executive died when Gloria was just eighteen months old. Her paternal aunt would eventually win custody over the girl and her share in the trust. The trial around who would take control of young Vanderbilt’s life and finances was a tabloid sensation at the time.
