One of the darkest moments in Canadian history happened on Dec 6, 1989: a male shooter walked into the École Polytechnique de Montréal with a semi-automatic rifle. He had written several letters outlining an anti-feminist agenda and he specifically targeted women in his shooting spree, eventually killing fourteen.
For thirty-one years, the “Montreal Massacre” was Canada’s worst shooting.
Denis Villeneuve’s 2009 film Polytechnique, co-written with Jacque Davidts, recounts the events of Dec 6. The film is shot in stark black and white and takes place partially in real time during the shooting, with time jumps and other strategic technical decisions to avoid being sensational or exploitative.
The film opens with a brief burst of violence as two women are shot in a photocopy lab by an offscreen shooter.

The film stars Guillaume Cyr, Pierre-Paul Alain, Karine Vanasse, Jason Cavalier, and Ted Pluviose. This looks like it has a dark...

Billed as the first Indigenous and female-led produced, written, and directed drama about the residential school experience in North America, Marie Clements’ “Bones of Crows” is not afraid of making people uncomfortable.
“We should be squeamish about it,” the helmer tells Variety at Mipcom, addressing the show’s graphic scenes. A concurrent feature film is also in the works.
“I never felt it was too harsh or too violent, but violence towards Indigenous people is a fact. I wanted the audience to understand it, but also understand the release of that, the release of the past.”

It’s been 10 years since audiences first met Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) in her quest for revenge on the wealthy Grayson family, who she believed were responsible not only for her father going to prison, but also for his death.
Loosely based on “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexandre Dumas, the series, aptly titled “Revenge,” ran four four seasons on ABC, from 2011-2015. It followed Emily (real name Amanda Clarke) as she moved to the Hamptons to carry out her plan, only to become more embroiled with the Graysons than even she could have expected and to learn secrets about her father than shocked even her.
Here, the cast and crew talk about the series’ overnight success, the confines of network television and about the departure of a key figure integral to the show’s DNA.

Denis Villeneuve's dramatisation of the 1989 Montreal massacre was released earlier this month by the BFI on Blu-ray and will be available to download from December 21.
Included with the release is Polytechnic: What remains of 6 December (Polytechnique: Ce qu'il reste du 6 décembre), a testimonial-driven documentary that was made by Judith Plamondon in 2019, 30 years on from Marc Lépine's shooting spree.
Plamondon lets witnesses, survivors, victims' families and media commentators recount the story in their own words as they, like the Villeneuve dramatisation, consider the misogynistic elements of the killing. The film's simple talking heads format - bolstered at key moments by archive footage and clips from Polytechnique - allows the power of what's being said to come across without unnecessary embellishment. A sense of the collective responsibility and mourning associated with the event gradually emerges. The documentary is narrated by Karine Vanasse, who instigated Villeneuve's adaptation and...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Raven Banner Entertainment's publicity arm. Director: Leo Scherman. Writers: Matt Booi and Leo Scherman. Cast: Karine Vanasse, Rossif Sutherland, Rob Archer, Charlie Carrick, Shaun Benson, Ted Atherton, Adam Hurtig and Robert Stadlober. Leo Scherman's Trench 11 is a World War I set horror film. There have been other horror films set in this time period, including Michael J. Bassett's Deathwatch (2001). This time, six Allied soldiers are tasked with exploring an underground, German medical complex. Shot in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Trench 11 offers some great practical make-up effects, from Francois Dagenais. However, the plot and the characters are a bit lightly drawn. Meanwhile, nothing about Trench 11 sounds like World War I. The costumes look great. Still, it is always strange to see a Canadian character with an American accent. At the end of the film, this horror film fan found Trench 11 a bit.

I've got a fun trailer for an awesome looking new horror film called Trench 11. The movie is set during World War I and it revolves around the discovery of a zombie outbreak in the final days of the war. I really enjoyed this first trailer for the film and I can't wait to watch this movie! Here's the synopsis:

The Germans have lost control of a highly contagious biological weapon that turns its victims into deranged killers. The Allies find themselves trapped underground with hordes of the infected, a rapidly spreading disease and a team of German Stormtroopers dispatched to clean up the mess. "This base has been sealed for a reason." Rlje Films has released an official trailer for the zombie horror film Trench 11, which premiered at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival last year and has been playing at various genre film festivals since then. The zombie horror is set in the final days of Wwi, following a shell-shocked soldier who must lead a mission deep beneath the trenches to stop a German plot that could turn the tide of the war. This is brutal and bloody and violent and exactly what you might expect for a film about Wwi bloodthirsty, worm-infected zombie soldiers. Trench 11 stars Rossif Sutherland, Karine Vanasse, Charlie Carrick, Shaun Benson, and Ted Atherton. This trailer takes a bit of time to build, but finally gets into the gnarly, freaky horror stuff, though they don't show much of the ensuing gore. Tread carefully. Here's the new official Us...

Part of our continuing partnership with the online film journal, cléo. Every month, cléo will be presenting a great film to watch on our video on demand platform. In conjunction, we'll be hosting an exclusive article by one of their contributors. It slows, speeds up, even stops altogether depending on who is experiencing the moment. The task of the filmmaker—or any storyteller—is evoking an understanding of these personal unfoldings of time; to make an interiorized experience of another resonate with a human who feels, sees and understands the world as oriented around themselves. “Forgive the mistakes. I had 15 minutes to write this.”These are the first words spoken in Denis Villeneuve’s Polytechnique. They are uttered in voiceover...
