Robert van Gulik(1910-1967)

In addition to writing 17 novels and a collection of short stories
based on the career of the real-life 7th Century Chinese
magistrate/detective Dee Jen-djieh, Robert van Gulik was a scholar and
diplomat. He had many publications in scholarly journals, and held a
number of positions in the Netherlands Foreign Service, serving in
various countries in Asia and the Middle East. He had a distinguished
diplomatic career, rising to ambassadorial rank, and at the time of his
death was the Netherlands Ambassador to Japan and the Republic of
Korea.
