It had been a minute since Anna Gunn felt the anticipation of an intriguing script hitting her inbox. Understandably, the incomparable writing she received for a combined decade on Deadwood and Breaking Bad set a high bar. But then the Colin Farrell-led Apple TV+ series Sugar came along.
Created by Mark Protosevich and executive produced by Audrey Chon/Simon Kinberg, the neo-noir show ended up being one of a couple recent Breaking Bad reunions for Gunn. Co-heads of Apple TV+ programming, Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, served as presidents at Sony Pictures Television when Vince Gilligan walked through their doors with his Breaking Bad pilot script, and on top of having a hand in Gunn joining Sugar, the two executives have been busy recruiting their former Breaking Bad collaborators to their acclaimed streamer, including Gilligan and his still-untitled upcoming series; Jonathan Banks and director-ep Michelle MacLaren for Constellation...

When it comes to Apple’s Hollywood ambitions, it’s all about spending big to win big.
On March 10, the tech giant has 13 shots to take home an Oscar via two historical epics, “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon,” which nabbed 10 and three nominations, respectively. That’s given Apple the second-biggest haul among the major studios and streamers, just behind Netflix’s 18 nods and tied with Universal and Searchlight.
But at what price? Sources say the Martin Scorsese-helmed “Killers” cost an eye-popping $215 million (that includes about $40 million in Covid-related costs). In fact, Apple spent at least $700 million to make and market just three films: “Killers,” Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” and Matthew Vaughn’s “Argylle.” The trio have earned a combined $466 million worldwide at the box office, with “Napoleon” leading the pack at $221 million, followed by “Killers” ($157 million) and “Argylle” ($88 million).
Apple isn’t complaining, at least not about “Killers” or “Napoleon.

[The following story contains spoilers from the first four episodes of Apple TV+’s The New Look.]
The New Look not only marks creator Todd A. Kessler’s first series for Apple TV+, but it’s also his first project in years without his previous writing partners, his brother Glenn and collaborator Daniel Zelman, with whom Kessler co-created Damages and Bloodline.
Instead, Kessler has partnered with veteran film producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, through their dB-ak production company, on the series about how Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and other French fashion designers of the time dealt with the struggles of World War II and launched modern fashion. The name refers to how Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Carmel Snow described Dior’s 1947 collection.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently, both Kessler and Di Bonaventura were enthusiastic about their new professional pairing. When asked how working on this series was different than his previous endeavors, Kessler was quick to offer praise.

Every broadcast network and streaming platform is focused on the same thing heading into 2024: trying to get back up and running following a year in which Hollywood’s historic dual strikes shut down production for months.
In the wake of the writers and performers strikes, streamers and networks are attempting to solidify their programming pipelines as several scripted comedies and dramas have been hampered by the work stoppage. HBO, for example, was quick to announce that the third seasons of Euphoria and The White Lotus as well as the sophomore run of The Last of Us will now arrive in 2025. Other platforms, like Amazon, have scrapped programming because delayed production is now affecting their marketing plans for 2025, when the streamer already has a heavy spend planned.

Holding the world premiere of Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” in Paris was a no-brainer for Sony’s motion picture group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman, due to the film’s French DNA and its subject, the famous French emperor (played by Joaquin Phoenix).
“Where else could you begin the worldwide rollout of ‘Napoleon’ than France?,” said Rothman on the red carpet of the event at the Salle Pleyel concert hall, where Phoenix, Vanessa Kirby and Tahar Rahim were able to attend thanks to the end of the 118-day SAG-AFTRA strike.
But the French theatrical bow comes with a downside for Apple, which financed the pricey movie and will now have to wait 17 months to launch the movie on its service due to France’s strict windowing rules.
“It’s a great credit to Apple who made the film because this particular movie (…) is a big screen experience,” said Rothman. “It...

Update, 3:14Pm After Exclusive: After meeting with studio CEOs earlier today, SAG-AFTRA has put out a statement, that they’re looking over the latest proposal from the AMPTP which the studios bill as their “last, best, and final offer.”
“We received an offer today from the AMPTP, which they characterized as their “Last, Best, and Final Offer,” said the SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical Negotiating Commitee this afternoon.
“We are reviewing it and considering our response within the context of the critical issues addressed in our proposals,” they added.
The so-called “best and final” language is exactly what the studios said to the WGA in the final days of what were ultimately successful negotiations with the scribes in late September. The phrase and the tactic were widely derided at the time.

The writers and actors strikes have brought Hollywood productions to a standstill. While mega-media companies may have initially welcomed the collateral cost-cutting for a few months, it’s time to get back to work.
To that effort, a dozen top executives from the eight main Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP) studios have been congregating on a “regular call,” Bloomberg reported on Sunday. The names on that call are: Ted Sarandos (Netflix), David Zaslav (Warner Bros. Discovery), Dana Walden and Alan Bergman (Disney), Tony Vinciquerra (Sony Pictures), Brian Robbins and George Cheeks (Paramount), Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht (Apple), Jen Salke and Mike Hopkins (Amazon), and Donna Langley (NBCUniversal).
Those are some big names — though perhaps the biggest name, Disney CEO Bob Iger, is notably missing. He’s “gotten more involved in recent weeks” and “has started to participate in many of the calls and meetings,” per the report.

Jason Clodfelter is leaving Sony Pictures Television after a nearly two-decade run.
Clodfelter, who most recently served as co-president of the studio under the recently installed Katherine Pope, has joined Legendary Television and will become the president of the studio behind shows including Amazon’s Carnival Row. He will work closely with vice chairman of worldwide production Mary Parent to develop new scripted series across all platforms.
Clodfelter replaces Chris Albrecht atop Legendary TV. Albrecht, the former Starz chief, was placed on administrative leave at Legendary in October 2022 after new details emerged about the executive’s former time at HBO. He departed not long afterward and this week launched a Spanish-language media studio.

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has quietly axed its thriller series Suspicion after one season.
Suspicion was a remake of Israeli drama series False Flag, produced by Keshet Productions, the UK-based arm of the Israeli broadcaster, producer and distributor behind the original.
The show followed 21-year-old Leo’s abduction from a large, upmarket hotel in central New York, which is captured on video and goes viral. Four British citizens staying at the hotel swiftly become prime suspects and have their lives turned upside down as they fight to absolve themselves of suspicion.
Starring as Katherine Newman, Oscar-nominee Uma Thurman appeared in six of the eight episodes and wasn’t due to feature in any further seasons, we understand. She was joined in Season 1 by the likes of Kunal Nayyar (The Big Bang Theory), Noah Emmerich (The Americans), Georgina Campbell (Black Mirror), Elyes Gabel (Scorpion), Elizabeth Henstridge (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Angel Coulby...

SAG-AFTRA has agreed to a last-minute call for federal mediation of its contract, but indicated it will not extend its contract deadline beyond Wednesday at midnight.
That would appear to leave relatively little time for a mediator to avert a strike, which could begin as soon as Thursday morning.
In a statement on Tuesday afternoon, the union emphasized that “time is running out” and made clear that relations between the two sides have become extremely strained.
The union said it remains committed to getting a deal by the deadline, but added, “we are not confident that the employers have any intention of bargaining toward an agreement.”
“The AMPTP has abused our trust and damaged the respect we have for them in this process,” the union said. “We will not be manipulated by this cynical ploy to engineer an extension when the companies have had more than enough time to make a fair deal.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers is requesting federal help in its ongoing negotiations with Hollywood’s biggest union.
The group, which bargains with labor unions on behalf of studios and streamers, has requested facilitators from the Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service to step in on the ongoing negotiations with performers’ union SAG-AFTRA. Insiders say the decision follows calls with high-level company executives including Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos, Warner Bros.-Discovery chief David Zaslav, Disney Entertainment co-chairmen Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, Apple TV chiefs Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, NBCUniversal Chief Content Officer Donna Langley, Amazon Studio bosses Mike Hopkins and Jen Salke as well as select company general counsels on Monday, where the executives surfaced the idea of federal intervention.

It wasn’t all that long ago that being the CEO of a major media or entertainment company was the top of the heap. The moguls of the day, from Ted Turner and Sumner Redstone to Rupert Murdoch and Steve Ross, dominated the culture — and earned billions in the process.
But the CEO gig ain’t what it used to be. David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, has become public executive enemy No. 1 for many industry workers amid the Writers Guild of America’s ongoing strike.
Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos is a close second, while Disney chief Bob Iger finds himself back in the CEO seat, but under much more challenging circumstances, all while trying to figure out who, if anyone, has what it takes to succeed him after his predecessor and successor Bob Chapek lasted only two and a half years.

The Writers Guild wants to take a bite out of Apple.
Deadline has confirmed that the guild plans to bring its monthlong strike to the front door of streamer Apple TV+ on Monday. In a deft move, the WGA action at Apple HQ in Cupertino, CA, dovetails with the kickoff of the Tim Cook-led company’s 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference on June 5.
The Apple action first was revealed Friday afternoon in a tweet from the AFL-CIO:

Deadline has reported that Rhea Seehorn is set to join Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys 4, which is currently shooting in Atlanta.
It’s not clear who Rhea Seehorn will be playing in Bad Boys 4, but after some seriously impressive work playing attorney Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul, she’s sure to be a very welcome addition to the cast.
After Bad Boys for Life grossed $426 million worldwide, it was clear that a sequel would soon follow, and not even SlapGate could stop it. Bad Boys 4 will find Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah returning to direct from a script by Chris Bremmer. Bad Boys for Life cast members Paola Núnez, Vanessa Hudgens, and Alexander Ludwig will return for the fourth installment alongside Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. It was also revealed last month that Eric Dane had joined the cast and was expected to play the villain.

In May 2017, Sony Pictures Television gave NBC a 50 percent ownership share of Timeless to get the Shawn Ryan-produced drama a second season after the broadcast network’s surprise decision to cancel the time-travel series. Flash forward six years and Sony — the independent studio where Ryan has been based with an overall deal since 2011 — and the prolific showrunner returned to the battlefield to save another show: CBS’ Swat.
Compared with Timeless, the negotiations over Swat were a bit different. To start, Sony fully owned Timeless when NBC decided to cancel the series after a single season. The studio, which at the time was overseen by executives Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht, sacrificed the lion’s share of the profits in order to keep Timeless on the air when it brought in NBC’s studio counterpart, Universal Television, as a co-producer.

None other than Leonardo DiCaprio showed up for Martin Scorsese during a special luncheon conversation at CinemaCon honoring the famed filmmaker. Both received standing ovations.
Scorsese is in Vegas to promote Killers of the Flower Moon, from Apple Original Studios and starring DiCaprio opposite Lily Gladstone and Robert DeNiro. Both DiCaprio and De Niro are Scorsese’s go-to actors and each starred in many of his films.
Apple Studios, which made Killers of the Flower Moon, is partnering with Paramount in order to give the film an exclusive theatrical release in theaters around the globe in October following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month. Scorsese’s most recent film, The Irishman (also starring De Niro) was famously released on Netflix after a relatively small theatrical run.

Apple has confirmed Deadline’s scoop on winning an all-night bidding battle for the John Carney-directed Flora and Son, as Apple’s Heads of Worldwide Video Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht and their head of features Matt Dentler burned the midnight oil to make the label’s biggest Sundance Film Festival deal since they acquired Coda in 2021. That film went on to establish Apple as the first streamer to win the Best Picture Oscar, with the film also winning Best Adapted Screenplay for director Sian Heder and Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur.
The three-year old Apple film label paid 25 million for Coda, and Flora and Son came in underneath that but it is certainly a pricey purchase — near the 20 million Netflix paid Monday for another festival favorite, Fair Play. That is more than the 15 million Apple paid at last Sundance for the Grand Jury Prize winner Cha Cha Real Smooth.

Though most kudos events are competitive, the annual AFI Awards, honoring 21 film and TV works, proved communal. Sarah Polley chatted with Michelle Williams, Jerry Bruckheimer was deep in conversation with James Cameron, the “Better Call Saul” talent huddled with “Reservation Dogs” and Steven Spielberg enthused about “The Bear” to the show’s team and FX Networks chairman John Landgraf.
The luncheon Jan. 13 at the Four Seasons Beverly Hills was filled with 250 industry heavy-hitters, but the scene-stealer was someone who had no attachment to any of the honored works: Al Pacino, who closed the event with a 10-minute speech that seemed rambling and hilarious, but proved to be pointed and concluded with a bang.
Before the event started, Universal Pictures chairwoman Donna Langley praised the annual gathering to Variety, saying: “It reminds us of the dignity and elegance of the industry as we gather here to celebrate artistry.”

Smith hit the carpet outside Westwood’s Regency Village Theatre just after 7 p.m., joined by wife Jada Pinkett Smith and children Trey, Jaden and Willow. Apple Original Films has dated the run-from-slavery thriller Emancipation for a December 2 theatrical opening, followed by a December 9 release on its Apple TV+ streaming site. This follows the film’s first showing in DC on Saturday, with star Will Smith and director Antoine Fuqua discussed the fact-based film in a screening orchestrated by Apple and NAACP during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Legislative Conference.
There has been much speculation — and erroneous reporting — as Apple and its filmmakers plotted just what to do with a meaningful film whose status as an awards-season frontrunner changed the moment Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock during the last Oscars, after the comic disparaged his wife with a joke about her hair. The dynamic duo is back! A new series from Vince Gilligan has been given a rare two-season guarantee at Apple TV+, and it will star none other than Rhea Seehorn. Variety reports that exact plot details are being kept under wraps, and with the somewhat-definitive end of the "Breaking Bad" franchise confirmed, we can expect this series to be wholly original. Not only that, but we can probably expect the series lead to not be as slimy or conniving as Walter White or Jimmy McGill.
"After fifteen years, I figured it was time to take a break from writing antiheroes," wrote Gilligan in a statement announcing the project, "and who's more heroic than the brilliant Rhea Seehorn?"
Well said, sir! This is slated to be Seehorn's first show in which she is the undeniable lead, which the showrunner says is "long past" due, and we agree! /Film has not been...

Last month, it was announced that Sony Pictures TV had given a two-season order for a new series from Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan – a series that has been described as a “blended, grounded genre drama” that’s something along the lines of the classic Rod Serling show The Twilight Zone. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Gilligan’s Better Call Saul cast member Rhea Seehorn is following him over to the new show and has signed on to play the lead role. This untitled series will be released through Apple TV+.
Former Sony Pictures TV presidents Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht, who greenlit Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul when they were at Sony, are now the heads of Apple’s streaming portfolio. Former Sony Pictures TV Studios co-president Chris Parnell is now at Apple as well, working as the senior TV programming executive.

Better Call Saul may be over, but series creator Vince Gilligan is already prepping his next series.
Apple TV+ announced Thursday that Gilligan had closed a deal to bring a new project to fruition.
However, the only information we have is that Better Call Saul breakout Rhea Seehorn is attached.
Oh, and because Gilligan has a proven track record with hits, Apple TV+ has offered up a two-season order.
It's cool to go into a show knowing its fate has already been decided.
“After fifteen years, I figured it was time to take a break from writing antiheroes… and who’s more heroic than the brilliant Rhea Seehorn?” Gilligan said in a statement.
“It’s long past time she had her own show, and I feel lucky to get to work on it with her. And what nice symmetry to be reunited with Zack Van Amburg, Jamie Erlicht and Chris Parnell!

Five Days at Memorial, the grim tale about the disastrous events that took place at a New Orleans hospital after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, finished its eight-episode run today on Apple TV+. Here, executive producer Carlton Cuse, who adapted the series together with John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) from the nonfiction book by Sheri Fink, explains what it was like to chronicle the story of healthcare professionals like Dr. Anna Pou (Vera Farmiga) and incident commander Susan Mulderick (Cherry Jones), who faced overwhelming odds to save patients at Memorial Medical Center.

If this were a typical year, by this point on Monday the winners would be known and their Emmys would be en route to shelves and safes across town. But since 2022’s calendar is decidedly not normal, and the Primetime Emmy Awards are still hours away, the Motion Picture & Television Fund had the honor of closing out the weekend with its 16th annual Evening Before the Emmys fundraiser in Los Angeles.
Mixing things up proved to be historic for the organization, as it raised a record-setting 3 million to support the 100-year-old nonprofit. The Century City party was treated to an electric performance by MPTF Board of Governors member Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, along with Snoop Dogg and special guests Flo Rida, Jeremih, Lil Tjay, Mann, O.T. Genasis, Tony Yayo and Uncle Murda.

Chris Van Amburg, who has steered marketing for Apple TV+ since before it launched in 2019, is exiting his post, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
In a note to staff, the exec said he was stepping down to spend more time with his family: “It is time for me to give back a bit to myself. Families are so important in life, and as Atv+ enters this next phase, I need to step away to dedicate more time to my personal one.”
Van Amburg joined Apple in September 2018 as head of video marketing, overseeing the ramping up and launch of the screened media portion of the digital giant. He handled both film and TV projects and was instrumental in helping the fledgling entertainment side find buzzworthy success with acclaimed and high-profile series The Morning Show, Ted Lasso and Severance and Oscar-winning movie Coda on the film side.

Some go-to advice for scriptwriting is to pitch your work as "x meets y"; two things with proven success mashed together. Vince Gilligan, the creator of "Breaking Bad," famously pitched the series as "Mr. Chips becomes Scarface." The boldness of that pitch won over then Sony Pictures Television executives Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht. Once Gilligan had them on his side to produce the series, he needed to find a network that would air it. This proved a challenge, with most of the prestige networks saying no before AMC finally said yes.
The struggle to find a home for "Breaking Bad" is shocking considering how successful the show became. However, Gilligan's recounting of his efforts is a pretty great story itself. Here's every network he pitched "Breaking Bad" to, and why they all said no.

It’s not unusual, given the intimate nature of the entertainment business, for enthusiasms to be shared among associates and colleagues. That’s especially true for actors working on a series, with their intense schedules and long days. Tony Hale, Timothy Simons and Clea DuVall not only forged a close-knit friendship while working on HBO’s Veep, they all entrusted their homes to interior designer Jason Martin of Martin & Brockett. Martin, in turn, managed to create three distinct spaces that perfectly reflect the lives and personalities of their inhabitants. “My clients all have a very strong sense of themselves,” say Martin, who also has worked with Apple TV+’s Zack Van Amburg and his wife, Lisa, and ICM’s Dar Rollins and his wife, actress Lindsay Sloane. “My job is to express that through their interior design in a way that feels organic,...
