Born Dorothy Howe, the young actress was chosen as the female winner of
Jesse L. Lasky's "Gateway to Hollywood" radio talent search in July
1939. Her reward was membership in the Screen Actors Guild, a three-year contract with RKO and the
stage name "Virginia Vale". The male winner of the same contest was
Kirby Grant.
