Apple TV+ has revealed the first teaser-trailer for “Presumed Innocent” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, from Emmy-winning creator David E. Kelley.
Gyllenhaal narrates the trailer as Rusty Sabich, a man seemingly consumed by his love for a woman named Carolyn (Renate Reinsve). “She woke something up inside me,” he says as the footage cuts between his time with her and images of cars and courtrooms and arguments — clearly invoking a darker twist in this alleged romance. Carolyn, it turns out, has been murdered and, given their history, Rusty is the prime suspect.
What the trailer leaves out is extra juicy: Rusty and Carolyn were coworkers and prosecutors, and the suspected crime sends waves through the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office as they mourn a colleague, reel from an affair, and pursue a murder investigation — to say nothing of how it affects Rusty’s marriage and home life.
The rest of the cast includes Ruth Negga,...

The Authors Guild, John Grisham, George R.R. Martin, Michael Connelly, Jodi Picoult and a group of other famous fiction writers filed a class action lawsuit on Wednesday against OpenAI, claiming that their technology is infringing on their works.
It’s the latest lawsuit to challenge AI’s use of copyrighted works as “training data” for their system.
In their complaint, the authors claim that OpenAI copied their works “wholesale, without permission or consideration.” The plaintiffs contend that the company fed their works into large language models, “algorithms designed to output human-seeming text responses to users’ prompts and queries.”
“Generative AI is a vast new field for Silicon Valley’s longstanding exploitation of content providers. Authors should have the right to decide when their works are used to ‘train’ AI. If they choose to opt in, they should be appropriately compensated,” author Jonathan Franzen said in a statement. Read the complaint.

Guy Ritchie is, as the kids say, booked and busy.
Fresh off “The Covenant” and the long-delayed “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre,” the suddenly prolific British genre filmmaker has a new project set up by Black Bear International. The new film, with a title and plot under-wraps, is being prepped for buyers at Cannes and will mark a class reunion of sorts. The big-budget actioner will star Jake Gyllenhaal of “The Covenant” and both Henry Cavill and Eiza González, who feature in the upcoming “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.”
Ritchie said “There’s something special that happens when you collaborate with the same partners regularly: you build a shorthand and a trust that lets everybody do their best work. Jake, Henry and Eiza are all astonishingly talented, committed, and engaging actors. This is going to be an action-packed movie that is both intellectually stimulating and physically exhilarating.”

Elizabeth Olsen is yet again trapped in a seemingly idyllic but actually quite sinister suburban setting in “Love & Death,” the new based-on-a-true-story series from David E. Kelley co-starring Jesse Plemons. And it looks juicy (watch the trailer above).
The official synopsis for “Love & Death” describes the new HBO Max original series as “the true story of Candy and Pat Montgomery and Betty and Allan Gore – two churchgoing couples enjoying their smalltown Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.” Judging by the shots of a blood-splattered Olsen walking down a hall, she seems to be the one who picks up said axe.

Passing and Preacher actor Ruth Negga is joining Jake Gyllenhaal for Presumed Innocent, an upcoming limited series for Apple TV+. Gyllenhaal is in final negotiations to star in the project from David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams’s Bad Robot and Warner Bros. TV. Taking inspiration from Scott Turow’s courtroom thriller, Presumed Innocent revolves around a vicious murder that sends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorneys’ office reeling when one of their representatives becomes a suspect in the crime.
Kelley’s version of the story is not the first time Turow’s tale has worked its way to screens. In 1990, a feature-length version starring Harrison Ford, Raul Julia, and Greta Scacchi hit theaters. The film, directed by Alan J. Pakula, earned 86,303,188 worldwide. Kelley’s version is said to investigate themes of obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to keep aspects of their life from falling apart.

Bad Robot has certainly had a run of, well, bad luck lately. The J. J. Abrams and Katie McGrath-led production label only just saw its ambitious sci-fi fantasy series "Demimonde" scrapped at HBO Max back in June 2022. This came a mere ten months after the streamer turned down Bad Robot's proposed prequel series to "The Shining," a show that has since failed to find a new home.
More recently, the company's 250 million deal with WarnerMedia has been scrutinized by the penny-pinching bosses at the newly-formed Warner Bros. Discovery, given that Bad Robot has yet to actually deliver any of the high-profile films or TV series it's started working on since the agreement was finalized in 2019. If all that wasn't enough, Apple TV+ has also elected to cancel Bad Robot's limited series "My Glory Was I Had Such Friends" after giving it a straight-to-series order in 2018.

Exclusive: Jennifer Garner has pulled out of the long-in-the-works Apple TV+ limited series My Glory Was I Had Such Friends, from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros. TV. As a result, the streamer has opted not to go forward with the project that it had landed with a straight-to-series order in 2018. Reps for Apple, Bad Robot, Wbtv and Garner declined comment.
According to sources, Garner exited My Glory Was I Had Such Friend for scheduling reasons. The show has taken quite awhile to get off the ground, and the Alias alumna is currently filming another Apple TV+ limited series, The Last Thing He Told Me, an adaptation of Laura Dave’s bestselling novel, which is produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine.

Like “Gone with the Wind,” “To Kill a Mockingbird,” and “The Help” before it, “Where the Crawdads Sing” is the adaptation of a native Southern female writer’s best-selling debut novel that sold millions. Its predecessors were box-office hits and Best Picture Oscar nominees, each winning in a least one major category. However, “Crawdads” may see a very different outcome: To understand the radical changes in the theatrical landscape, look no further than the best-selling adaptation.
At the upper reaches of industry projections, “Where the Crawdads Sing” (Sony) won’t provide memorable box office. Opening numbers range from 8 million to 18 million for the 25 million production, making it one of the lower opening weekends for a wide studio release this summer.
That’s also why it’s interesting: What’s it doing here? It’s the furthest thing from a franchise film. It’s also aimed at adults, skewed toward women.

Remember when people read novels? That might seem like an inane statement to those seeking out this review or the story of Amy Tan, but it’s hard to remember the last time a novel dominated the conversation outside the now seemingly narrowed world of people who regularly read fiction. The documentary “Amy Tan: Unintended Memoir” waxes nostalgic for that time, immersing us in the author’s meteoric success with “The Joy Luck Club” in 1989 as a blockbuster work of fiction, while also showing how that level of success and her self-informed pressure to deliver a massive followup, plagued her on a personal level. As the final film from James Redford (son of Robert Redford), this PBS “American Masters” entry is a riveting portrait of the artist, exceptionally crafted and entertaining enough even for those unfamiliar with Tan’s groundbreaking contributions to Asian American literature.
For one, Amy Tan is just cool.

Novelist Amy Tan’s centrality to the history of Asian American representation in literature and on-screen cannot be overstated. And the late James Redford’s pleasant, sympathetic biographical documentary, “Amy Tan: Unintended Memoir” is careful to avoid any such overstatement: It presents Tan’s fascinating life story from an intimate perspective, which is engaging and compelling on the level of personal reminiscence, but perhaps inevitably falls short in the broader assessment of her cultural impact. It’s an approach that seems to emanate from the subject herself: Whatever self-regard might be implied by the term “memoir” is swiftly dispelled by its “unintended” nature.
This humility makes the film both endearing and a little frustrating. Tan’s genius, as several publishing and media-industry interviewees assert, was in creating widely relatable fiction out of the idiosyncratic, specific details of her life. But barely explored is the contradiction that arises when despite your humble approach,...

Hollywood and the Oscars have a long history of legal dramas, from the 1931 “A Free Soul” through the 1982 “The Verdict” (five nominations), to the 2007 “Michael Clayton”.
So Warner Bros.’ “Just Mercy,” which plays at the AFI Fest in Hollywood this month and opens theatrically in the U.S. on Christmas Day, could do well.
“Just Mercy” uses the staples of courtroom drama: The setbacks, the reversals, the “backstage” lives of the prosecutors and/or defending attorneys. That will be a major asset to Oscar voters who like well-structured pieces. But it’s not shiny-new flashy filmmaking, which is its biggest plus and its biggest challenge.
Last year, “Green Book” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” were dissed endlessly because they featured storytelling that could have been made 20 years ago, as opposed to such cutting-edge movies as “The Favourite,” “Vice” and “Black Panther.” But many voters embraced those 2018 movies.

A television adaptation of Scott Turow’s novel “One L” is in “very early” development at Freeform, Variety has learned.
The eponymous series “follows five uniquely gifted students who bond as they navigate the perils of their first year of law school and come to terms with who they want to be, while grappling with their complicated pasts,” according to the network.
Turow is the author of about a dozen books, including legal thrillers “Identical,” “Presumed Innocent,” and “Burden of Proof.” The nonfictional “One L: The Turbulent True Story of a First Year at Harvard Law School,” was first published in 1977.
The attorney and scribe is penning the pilot for Freeform with writer Jill Abbinanti. Abbinanti’s TV credits include “CSI: NY,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Pan Am,” and “Instinct.”
Several of Turow’s other works have already been adapted into movies for the small screen, including “Innocent,...

Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov is in “severe danger” in the eighth week of his hunger strike, according to the European Film Academy.
On day 54 of his indefinite hunger strike, the European film network has again called for his immediate release. At their annual meeting during the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival they drafted a letter calling on President Vladimir Putin and the Russian authorities to “finally show a human face.”
According to Ukrainian news service Kyiv Post, Sentsov’s lawyer Dmitry Dinze described his condition this week as “relatively stable.” He is said to be surviving on “vitamins and glucose” but a “crisis could begin at any time.”
Human rights organizations and filmmakers and artists from Europe and the U.S. have raised their voices in support since the director and father of two children started his hunger strike May 14. He has demanded that Russia release all Ukrainian political prisoners...

Oleg Sentsov, the Ukraine filmmaker who was convicted in 2015 of plotting terrorist attacks and sentenced to 20 years in a Russian prison, is on day 24 of a hunger strike as artists and activists around the world continue to rally for his cause. Supporters demanding Sentsov’s release include Pen America and the European Film Academy. The former addressed a letter to Russian president Vladimir Putin this week while Efa has been pleading on his behalf for years, ramping up efforts recently to free the Gaamer director. Public protests have also ramped up in the past week in places like Krakow, Kiev and Tel Aviv.
That Sentsov’s hunger strike and the increased media attention is happening in the run-up to the World Cup is not a coincidence, Sentsov’s cousin Natalya Kaplan told The Independent. “His exact words to us were that if he dies during the World Cup he would...

Lawyers in motion pictures have been portrayed as one of two extremes, devils or angels, almost since celluloid was invented. The first film dealing specifically with a law firm and attorneys, 1933’s Counsellor at Law, starring John Barrymore, portrayed its J.D.s as upstanding citizens, as did the early Perry Mason films of the same period. With that in mind, we bring you a list of the good, the bad and the ugly of lawyers in movies. Enjoy, and please refrain from suing us if you feel otherwise...
