Production Partners Inc. has teamed with Frank Darabont's Darkwoods Prods. to develop and produce a big-screen adaptation of author Margaret Leslie Davis' Rivers in the Desert: William Mulholland and the Inventing of Los Angeles. PPI -- led by the team of Sandy Chanley, Tom Bull, Keith Truesdell and Scott Butler -- acquired the rights to the book earlier this year from Davis. Rivers in the Desert chronicles the true story of Mulholland, considered a visionary who was vital in building modern Los Angeles, from his triumphant rise to his tragic fall. Mulholland designed the longest aqueduct in the Western Hemisphere to bring in water from the mountains, effectively transforming Los Angeles from a desert to an inhabitable environment. Ascending to wealth and fame, Mulholland saw it all taken away when a dam he constructed collapsed and killed more than 500 people.
