We see more of him in this short clip than we do in the trailer. And it's not much of a clip. Hopefully he's given more to do than light Sean Penn's cigarettes, and deliver speeches filled with epigrams (see my "Is Idris Elba a Hollywood Leading Man Yet?" post from a few months ago). Here's the trailer for one of a handful of films that Idris Elba has a role in, but doesn't star, even though, he very well could have (see my "Is Idris Elba a Hollywood Leading Man Yet?" post from earlier this week, for context). Peter Travis’ 2012 film Dredd is just one of those things, a film adored by fans, and even some critics, but totally ignored by mainstream audiences. So a $50 million budgeted film ended up grossing a frightening $13 million domestic and only another $22 worldwide. With those kind of numbers, the only time the word […]

The last word we heard on the prospect of a "Dredd" sequel came last spring, when producer Adi Shankar said "probably not" when asked about a followup. It's hard to fault the logic, considering the franchise reboot earned a measly $35 million worldwide on a budget of $50 million, and the helmeted hero barely registering with audiences. But it seems DVDs are keeping hope alive. At the Destination Star Trek Frankfurt event (which we didn't even know was a thing), Karl Urban was in attendance for fans, and when asked about "Dredd 2," Urban replied that "conversations" were happening thanks to the first film's performance on home video. Apparently, there is some form of chatter happening between Lionsgate, screenwriter Alex Garland and director Peter Travis. Who really knows what the extent of the talks are, but we'd guess that the first question to be addressed will be how to find an audience that...

Sean Penn is the latest aged actor getting in on the old man action film bandwagon. This is our first look at him as a hitman who wants out of the game in the upcoming new thriller The Gunman. It also stars Javier Bardem, Idris Elba, and Ray Winstone. When talking about the film, Penn wouldn't really admit that he was making an action film,
"Here's the funny thing. Calling it an 'action film' is kind of like calling Meryl Streep a sexy blonde chick. She is. But that really doesn't tell the story of what she is at all."I don't separate this in my mind from anything else I have done. It's a very human story that deals with the same things exploited in action films, like warfare."
But it sounds like it's still an action thriller. Nothing he can say is going to change that.

Last year, director Peter Travis and screenwriter Alex Garland brought Judge Dredd fans a cool hard-r take on the character to the big screen called Dredd. The movie turned out to be great. For the most part, fans were happy with what the movie had to offer. It got positive reviews, but for some reason general audiences didn't embrace it. $45 million was spent making the film. Unfortunately, it only made $35.6 million worldwide. Because of that, I thought for sure that the prospect for a sequel was dead and buried. Apparently that's not the case! In a recent interview with Collider, Karl Urban revealed that there's still hope for Dredd 2!
Interestingly enough, I did have breakfast with Alex Garland this morning. It’s not off the agenda. Clearly everyone has woken up to the fact that an audience has found this movie and loves it. It’s entirely possible, and if...

Unlike many other blockbuster movies, Dredd 3D used only one VFX facility to create its effects instead of depending on multiple digital agencies. In fact, Prime Focus was hand-picked to work on the effects even before the director was brought on board.
Prime Focus VFX supervisor Jon Thum says involving the visual effects studio from the start of the production process helped deliver a great film. "We were able to eliminate the wasteful use of effects, which usually happens on movies when the digital companies are contracted further down the line. By integrating the effects so closely into the storyline, we were able to find clever ways of making high-level visuals on a relatively low budget."

Taken director Pierre Morel is set to direct Sean Penn in a new action thriller called Prone Gunman. The movie will be an adaptation of the 1981 novel written by Jean-Patrick Manchette. The film seems like something Morel would take on, as it tells the story of a betrayed covert op who has to rely on his survival skills as he's being hunted across Europe. It's interesting that Penn is going to take on the part, as it seems like a different role for the actor. The script for the film was written by Dredd screenwriter Peter Travis.

1.) Original plans to follow-up the 3-D re-release of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace with re-releases of Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith later this year have been canned. Official word is so Disney and Lucasfilm can now concentrate solely on rebooting the franchise with Star Wars: Episode VII, which J.J. Abrams was officially announced as director over the weekend. Yes, I think we are all together in realizing that makes no sense, especially since 3-D re-releases are essentially free money, but perhaps that's just the image they weren't interested in putting out there on top of the fact Phantom Menace didn't exactly perform too well. Deadline 2.) Brad Bird's next film was originally going to be titled 1952, but Disney sent out a press release yesterday announcing it will now be known as Tomorrowland. There are no plot details outside of rumors the story will be UFO related.

Late last year it was announced that Sean Penn would be following in the footsteps of actors like Liam Neeson and toplining his own European-set action film. And now, THR is reporting that “Taken” helmer Pierre Morel is in negotiations to direct Penn in his own potential franchise with “Prone Gunman.” The film, written by Peter Travis, is an adaptation of the Jean-Patrick Manchette novel that will follow Penn as “an international operative named Martin Terrier who is betrayed by the organization he works for and must go on the run in a relentless game of cat-and-mouse across Europe.” Morel, whose last directorial effort was the 2010 John Travolta-starring flop “From Paris With Love,” is probably the best choice for the subject matter. Interestingly, he’ll be the second filmmaker to take a stab at Manchette’s novel, as it was made into the forgotten 1982 French film “Le Choc,” starring Alain Delon and.

Despite Karl Urban uttering, “I am the law” his overall demeanor was just one of the many disappointments in the new film take on the classic 2000 Ad hero, Judge Dredd. Dredd is out on home video this week from Lionsgate and it is amazing how bored I was watching it. The majority of the 96 film takes place in the Peach Trees Block and is effectively Dredd playing John McLane, trying to survive a sealed off building under siege.
It’s hard to watch this without comparing it with the Sylvester Stallone misfire of the 1990s. Sean Penn isn't really known for his action films, he's more of a dramatic and intense kind of guy. His upcoming role in Gangster Squad looks like the most action-packed film he's done so far, but now he's set to jump on board an action film franchise called Prone Gunman.
Joel Silver is producing the movie, so that should give you sense of what kind of action movie we're talking about. Sean Penn has signed on to play Martin Terrier in the action thriller Prone Gunman, based on the novel by French author Jean-Patrick Manchette.
Penn isn’t exactly known for his action chops, but don’t worry this film is completely different from every other action film. You see, the plot follows Terrier, an “international operative who is betrayed by the organization he works for and must go on the run in a relentless game of cat-and-mouse across Europe.”
See? Like nothing we’ve seen in any action film, ever.
If your concerned Penn is getting away from his usual politically charged roles, don’t be. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Manchette is “a leftist French author, and his books — in the French noir genre — have been described as existentialist and involving explorations of politics as well as the human condition.”
So this will have something for everyone!

Dredd is one of the most entertaining movies of the year. Is it a theatrical masterpiece or exemplary feat of acting or special effects? No, but it is a gritty, faithful, adaptation of one of the best characters to ever scowl across a comic book panel. It sure as hell deserves better than its paltry $6.3M estimated weekend box-office take. Correct your mistake, assuage your misgivings and go see Dredd this week! Finally saw Dredd. Absolutely nailed themood and character. *****— Dave Gibbons (@davegibbons90) September 17, 2012 Dredd was great. Focused, tense, perfect casting. Minimal Garland Problem (usually weak third act).— Jamie McKelvie (@McKelvie) September 17, 2012 I went 2 the premier of Dredd! That movie was off the chain!! That drug in it called "Slowmo" was cool..Special effects was awesome!Go see it— Coco (@cocosworld) September 20, 2012 Peter Travis did a cracking job on Dredd. Really enjoyed it. Dredd 3D box office: One of 2012′s major domestic bombs Dredd 3D, the much-anticipated (in some quarters) action sci-fier, opened at no. 5 on the North American box-office chart, with a dismal $2.23m at 2,506 venues on Friday according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Directed by Peter Travis and starring Karl Urban in the title role, Dredd will probably bring in around $6-6.5m for the weekend — despite 3D surcharges. (Photo: Karl Urban Dredd 3D.) That would be a downright abysmal opening — worse than the already dreadful $8 million to $10 million that pundits had predicted — for the much-talked [...]...

Title: Dredd 3D Director: Pete Travis Starring: Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Heady, Wood Harris Dredd is the RoboCop sequel Paul Verhoeven never got to make. Karl Urban seems to have used Peter Weller’s performance as a reference, but is able to make the titular character into his own. While it’s lacks the satire of the 1987 classic, Peter Travis’ take on the helmet wearing badass has the ultra-violence and visuals that would inhabit one of Verhoeven’s big three (Robo, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers.) It’s also the best comic book film of the year! Many comparisons have been made to The Raid, and it’s almost hard not to compare the two films. True, The Raid showcases much [ Read More ]...

The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

There are many things is this world which deep down, I still don’t really understand. Things like, how do planes stay in the air? How does electricity actually work? And just how has June Sarpong forged a career? Few things are as puzzling to me though as the longevity of Adam Sandler’s movie career. He had some decent comedies early on, Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer spring to mind, and Punch-Drunk Love isn’t without its appeal, but since around 2004, he has a seemingly unparalleled run of misfiring duds. 50 First Dates, Spanglish, The Longest Yard, Click, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry , Funny People, Grown Ups, Just Go With It and Jack and Jill. I know somebody must find these movies funny, else they wouldn’t all make a decent return on investment and thus keep getting made, but personally, I just don’t get it.

In case you still need convincing, you can read Ben’s promising review of the film here. And if that still wasn’t enough, we’ve got a new clip to share, courtesy of Digital Spy, taking a slightly different tack from the action we’ve seen a lot of, showing a bit of character development from the action/thriller, with Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) and Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) discussing the possibility of making a difference.
