Harlequin romance novels are getting a new lease of life in audio form.
The company has struck a deal with podcast company Audio Up, which is behind Stephen King’s Strawberry Spring, to adapt a number of its books into audio series.
Harlequin is the company responsible for the books behind series such as Sweet Magnolias and Virgin River. The plan is to turn 52 books into podcasts.
First up is Montana Mavericks, a scripted dramatic podcast based on In Search of the Long-Lost Maverick, written by Christine Rimmer.
The series is set in Bronco Heights with its small-town charm and Western allure, where Melanie Driscoll, seeking a fresh start, returns home from the big city into the waiting arms of Gabe Abernathy, a rugged cowboy from the town’s most powerful family with secrets of his own.
It will also have an original soundtrack from a number of rising stars...

Peter Berg’s Film 44 To Produce Limited Series ‘Amity And Prosperity’ Based On Pulitzer-Winning Book
Peter Berg and Michael Lombardo’s Film 44 is set to produce a limited series based on Eliza Griswold’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book Amity and Prosperity: One Family and the Fracturing of America. Kristina Lauren Anderson, who is adapting Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist for TriStar and a screenplay based on Swan Lake for Universal, has been tapped to write.
The book, published last year, is an exposé on how fracking shattered the rural Pennsylvania town of Amity and how one lifelong resident, Stacey Haney, brought the story into the national spotlight. The paperback edition hits stands tomorrow.
Haney, a lifelong resident of Amity, was struggling to support her children when the fracking boom came to town. Like most of her neighbors, she saw the energy companies’ payments as a windfall. Soon trucks are rumbling down her unpaved road and a fenced-off fracking site rises on adjacent land. But her annoyance...

When Deadline runs its Most Valuable Blockbuster film profitability countdown each year, readers often ask about certain wildly profitable films that didn’t crack our top list. So we’ve once again had five overachievers (pics with production budgets under $40 million) broken down by the experts.
With the Disney-Fox merger now sealed, and event movies more prevalent, there are those low- to mid-budgeted films that can win out at the box office. Here’s proof of that from 2018.

The Nun

The horror film’s success is a throwback to when popcorn films were able to succeed thanks to a strong brand and with great timing on the calendar, despite bad reviews. Updated with more insight: The horror franchise reboot craze which Hollywood reaped off during the early part of the millennium looked as good as dead last year.
Than this weekend, Universal/Miramax/Blumhouse’s Halloween, the 11th sequel in a 40-year-old franchise, opened to $76.2M, making it the best start ever for the John Carpenter franchise, second-best domestic debut for a horror movie and the second best October opening; Sony’s Venom setting an $80.2M record three weekends ago.
It’s an age old Hollywood business axiom: Say a certain type of movie isn’t possible commercially, until someone proves it is. Moviegoers’ tastes in horror in recent years have escalated to embracing original, smart fare such as Get Out, Split , Don’t Breathe, and A Quiet Place; pics that were quite often critically acclaimed.
Beginning with the Marcus Nispel directed, Jessica Biel 2003 headliner Texas Chainsaw Massacre ($28M opening,...

John Ridley is a filmmaker in demand. After nabbing an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay three years ago with 12 Years a Slave, the writer-director has been involved in a raft of wildly diverse projects, from the politically charged miniseries Guerrilla to American Crime, which is now in the midst of its third season on ABC.
And now, just as his Los Angeles riots documentary Let it Fall prepares to release via ABC and select theaters, John Ridley has closed a deal to write and direct his next project: time-travel pic Needle in a Timestack. An adaptation of Robert Silverberg’s riveting short story, the plot orbits around “a devoted husband who will stop at nothing to save his marriage when it is destroyed by a time traveling rival.” Cue the paradoxes and mind-bending timelines, though there’s currently no mention of casting at this time.

On Thursday, John Carpenter dropped the Haddonfield bombshell horror fans have been waiting for when he announced that David Gordon Green and Danny McBride will be writing a new Halloween movie, with Green directing the anticipated new entry to the franchise. While details surrounding the story of the film are still under wraps, there has been some speculation that the latest Halloween film would be a remake, but McBride recently revealed that a remake isn't the direction he and Green are taking Michael Myers' story.
Speaking with CinemaBlend to promote the Blu-ray and DVD release of Vice Principals Season 1, McBride discussed which parts of the pre-existing Halloween mythology will influence the new movie:
"You know, it's not a remake. It's actually, it's gonna continue the story of Michael Myers in a really grounded way. And for our mythology, we're focusing mainly in the first two movies and what that...

Some days, I really have to pinch myself, because getting the opportunity to be at tonight’s Halloween announcement is easily one of the coolest moments I’ve had in the seven years I’ve lived in California.
Last week, I received a mysterious call from Josh Raffel at Blumhouse Productions, who invited me to a secretive event to be held tonight, May 23rd, and other than providing me with a time, that’s all the information I was given. Once I arrived tonight, along with a select group of journalists, the mystery was finally revealed with the announcement of a new partnership behind a brand new Halloween, which is bringing together Miramax, Blumhouse Productions, Trancas International’s Malek Akkad (longtime producer of the Halloween franchise), as well as legendary Master of Horror John Carpenter in an executive producer role for the film. All eyes may be firmly trained on the imminent festive season, though Broad Green Pictures is thinking further afield – specifically, the release date of comedy sequel Bad Santa 2, which is now locked for November 23, 2016.

With Mean Girls director Mark Waters instated at the helm, America Horror Story alum Kathy Bates has joined the cast of Bad Santa 2 as Sunny Soke, the no-nonsense mother to Billy Bob Thornton’s sleazy mall santa, Willie Soke.
Setting up shop at Miramax with financing help from Broad Green Pictures, the studios’ long-in-development sequel to 2003’s dark cult comedy is primed to leap in front of the cameras at the beginning of 2016, eyeing up that all-important festive window in little over a year’s time.
Reprising his title role as the con artist, Thornton returns as the borderline-alcoholic Willie for another round of R-rated festivities. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon II: The Green Destiny
Director: Yuen Woo-ping
Writer: John Fusco
Producers: David Thwaites, Harvey Weinstein
U.S. Distributor: The Weinstein Co.
Cast: Donnie Yen, Michelle Yeoh
No need comparing Ang Lee’s classic to the eventual sequel as this might be a comparison between apples and oranges. Yuen Wo Ping, the one who infused The Matrix films, the Kill Bills and more recently, The Grandmaster with a unique martial arts choreography true to his own — we’re hoping that the storytelling is just as strong.
Gist: Donnie Yen stars as Silent Wolf and Michelle Yeoh reprises her role as Yu Shu Lienin in what is book 5 in the “Crane-iron Pentalogy” series.
Release Date: With production set for March of this year, there is an outside chance that this might be ready an end of season showing in Asia and perhaps a subsequent Berlin Film Fest 2015 launch.

The Weinstein Company and Celestial Pictures are teaming to produce English-language remakes of two classic Shaw Brothers martial arts titles.
Both are being penned by John Fusco and produced by Harvey Weinstein and David Thwaites.
The first, based on Sun Chung's 1978 effort "The Avenging Eagle," follows a cabal master who raises orphans to be his own personal thugs in an outlaw band. One of the orphans strikes out on his own and joins up with a mysterious warrior, while the rest of the group seek out to kill the orphan for rebelling.
The second film is based on King Hu's 1966 film "Come Drink With Me" and follows a band of thugs who kidnap a young official as hostage to exchange for their captured leader.
The prisoner’s highly skilled martial artist sister is sent to free him and seeks help from a beggar and Kung-Fu master to get her brother back.

In a move that is sure to further antogonise the martial arts fanboys, Film Business Asia has reported that The Weinstein Company is teaming up with Celestial Pictures to remake Shaw Brothers classics Come Drink With Me and The Avenging Eagle. Harvey Weinstein will co-produce the films with David Thwaites, based on scripts by John Fusco, all three of whom are currently working together on the Yuen Woo Ping-directed Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon II: Green Destiny. This suggests that the new versions of the King Hu and Sun Chung classics will be straight remakes (rather than reworking the stories in a modern setting, for example), but as yet there seems to be no confirmation of exactly what TWC and Celestial have in mind.Harvey Weinstein has angered...
