Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck's HBO miniseries "White House Plumbers" is a tonally audacious, behind-the-bungling tale of the men who botched the Watergate break-in and set in motion the demise of Richard M. Nixon's presidency. The series is focused on the two "masterminds" of the errant operation: E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Paul Theroux). The five-episode series, directed by David Mandel (the former showrunner of "Veep"), is both broadly comedic and bruisingly tragic, as it must be.
What these men and their inept coconspirators carried out is easily the most egregious own-goal in the history of American politics. Nixon was riding high in the polls against his liberal 1972 opponent, Senator George McGovern of North Dakota, when they pushed through a plot to infiltrate the DNC headquarters housed at the sprawling Watergate complex in Washington D.C. After four failed missions, the group finally breached the office,...

The intersection of late-stage capitalism and late-stage Peak TV has made prophets of people normally fixated on profits.
It would be borderline madness if, on a weekly basis, the Walt Disney Co., Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon and Apple were to send shareholders an email with the subject line: “The End Is Nigh.” But the television industry, which has normally explored issues of class with the same skittishness it reserves for religion, has started to treat the economic realities of our American experiment with far more pessimism than you would expect.
The irony is plain: These content producers/unlikely doomsday preachers are putting out a steady stream of shows about the corrosive impact of a system that treats workers as interchangeable cogs existing only to fatten the bottom line; at the same time, they’re raising subscription prices on loyal customers and killing off completed productions that employed hundreds for tax write-offs.

Peter Weir's "Witness" was a sleeper hit when it arrived in U.S. theaters on February 8, 1985. Back then, the first two months of the moviegoing calendar were dominated by the previous year's holiday season blockbusters and Academy Awards contenders, many of which were expanding from limited release. In 1985, this modestly budgeted crime thriller about a streetwise Philadelphia detective hiding out in a Pennsylvania Amish community was up against the box office juggernaut of "Beverly Hills Cop" and the critically acclaimed duo of "The Killing Fields" and "A Passage to India." The timing of the release indicated a lack of confidence on the part of the studio, especially since Weir's previous movie, "The Year of Living Dangerously," had been a major awards contender (with Linda Hunt winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for playing a Chinese-American man).

Apple TV+ has canceled “The Mosquito Coast” after two seasons, according to media reports.
The decision arrives fresh on the heels of the end of Season 2, the finale of which dropped two weeks ago.
Loosely based on Paul Theroux’s bestselling 1981 novel, “The Mosquito Coast” stars Justin Theroux, Melissa George, Logan Polish and Gabriel Bateman. The story follows Allie Fox (Theroux), an idealist inventor who puts his family in jeopardy in order to escape the U.S. government, cartels and bounty hunters.
A previous movie adaptation of the book starred Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren and River Phoenix. The first two seasons served as prequel material to the Peter Weir-directed film, which came out in 1986.

Apple TV+ has canceled “The Mosquito Coast” after two seasons.
Based on Paul Theroux’s best-selling novel, “The Mosquito Coast” follows the dangerous journey of Allie Fox, a brilliant inventor and stubborn idealist, who uproots his family on a dangerous quest to find refuge from the U.S. government, cartels, and hitmen.
In the latest chapter, viewers found the Fox family barely escaping Mexico with their lives, venturing deep into the Guatemalan jungle to meet up with an old friend and her community of refugees. This new refuge creates trouble for the Foxes though when they become entangled in a conflict between a local drug lord and his family. At odds about whether to settle down or keep moving, Allie and Margot pursue different paths to secure their family’s future. The outcome of which will either unite the family or tear it apart forever. The Season 2 finale aired earlier this month.

Spoiler Alert: After an explosive Season Two finale of The Mosquito Coast, a decision looms imminently on whether Apple TV+ reups. It so, the third season heads right into the territory of Paul Theroux’s 1981 novel that Peter Weir turned into a cult classic movie with Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren and River Phoenix. The one where Ford’s brilliant counterculture inventor Allie Fox becomes so obsessed with imposing a vision of utopia that he nearly takes down his family. Here, the author discusses seeing his famed novel pre-quelized by Neil Cross (Luther), the improvements over his book, his nephew Justin starring, and why he’s so rooting for one more season.

From the very beginning of his career, Harrison Ford viewed himself as an actor rather than a movie star –- sometimes to his detriment. He washed out of Columbia Pictures' New Talent Program in the 1960s after failing to impress in a few bit parts, and played against his rakish charm until he broke through as Han Solo in "Star Wars." Even after that, he sought out challenging roles in less commercial films before returning as the charismatic smuggler in "Star Wars: Episode V –- The Empire Strikes Back."
Ford played the matinee idol game pretty much by the book in the early 1980s, which, after the completion of the original "Star Wars" trilogy and his second go-round as Indiana Jones, earned him decidedly more leeway to take risks than he'd had in the past. He wasted no time by jumping into Peter Weir's "Witness," a masterfully rendered fish-out-of-water...

Helen Mirren has shared the one thing that’s always bothered her about American Western films.
The British actor currently stars opposite Harrison Ford in Paramount+’s Yellowstone spin-off 1923, which is set in Montana in the years before the Great Depression.
Mirren and Ford play a married couple who run a cattle ranch, with Mirren speaking in an Irish accent on the show.
In a new interview with The Times, Mirren explained that her choice of dialect came after often feeling frustrated at the accents seen in traditional Western films and shows.
“It always annoyed me about American westerns that everybody spoke with American accents,” she explained.
“They were all immigrants. In Butte, Montana, they were from Cornwall – they have Cornish pasties there – from Wales, Scotland, from Ireland, from Moldova, from the Basque region in Spain. So this incredible mix of accents and cultures and food. And that is very much what created America.

Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker might've been the protagonist of George Lucas' "Star Wars," but Harrison Ford was its breakout star as the charming interstellar rapscallion Han Solo. He would've broken out eight years earlier in Jacques Demy's "Model Shop," but the genius head of Columbia Pictures at the time believed Ford had "no future" as a film actor. Having finally kicked down the door at the age of 35, Ford was determined to not get pigeonholed as his generation's Flash Gordon à la Buster Crabbe. So before "Star Wars" hit theaters on May 22, 1977, the actor chased down a supporting role in a small, independently produced film.

Allie Fox (Justin Theroux) and his family seek temporary refuge from their enemies deep in the Guatemalan jungle in the trailer for Season 2 of “The Mosquito Coast,” out Nov. 4.
The Apple TV+ drama picks up after the Foxes – consisting of genius inventor Allie, his wife Margot (Melissa George) and their two children (Logan Polish and Gabriel Bateman) – narrowly escape from Mexico. Their next stop is a community of refugees led by one of Allie’s old friends. Though it seems like a solution, things quickly move into dangerous territory again when they get caught up in a conflict between a local drug lord and his family.
The trailer opens with Allie ensuring his family, “We’ve made it; everything’s gonna be different from now on.” Despite the idyllic scenery and newfound community, Margot isn’t convinced that they’re safe: “You want to make us a home,” she tells her husband.

"Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade" may be the finale to the trilogy, but it opened by going back to the adventurer's earliest beginnings. In a 10-minute sequence set in 1912 Utah, we learn how the future Dr. Jones acquired his hat, his whip, and his fear of snakes. Harrison Ford was obviously much too old to play the teenage Indy during this cold open, so River Phoenix played the part instead.
Ford is more protective of Indiana Jones than he is many of his other roles. It's not surprising that Phoenix only played the part with his approval. However, Ford didn't just okay Phoenix's casting, he was the one who first proposed it. How did Ford know Phoenix could successfully play his younger self? Three years earlier in 1986, they had played father and son in "The Mosquito Coast."

Fresh off its season two renewal, The Mosquito Coast star Justin Theroux is already anticipating the future of his Apple TV+ series, which is based on his uncle Paul Theroux’s novel of the same name. The series chronicles an idealistic inventor and enigmatic fugitive named Allie Fox (Theroux) who uproots his family in order to seek refuge on the Mosquito Coast of Nicaragua and Honduras. With season one ending where the novel and the 1986 Harrison Ford and Peter Weir movie begin, Theroux explains the utility of saving the Fox family’s arrival on the Mosquito Coast for season two.
“It’s not a disingenuous thing to say or premise, but season one was really built as sort of a prequel. We needed a motivating force to get them out of the country in order to serialize it,” Theroux tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So...

I've done this exercise before, and some of the same films made the list this time, but not all. America in 2016 is different than the America of 2002, and that's part of what I love about this country. And make no mistake... I love this country. I believe America is a nation defined by contradictions. I am both cynical and idealistic about it, and I love it precisely because of the ways it breaks my heart. I am fully aware that one can only exist because of the other. With that in mind, here are ten films that, taken together, define the state of our union in the year 2016. The Right Stuff Philip Kaufman’s movie celebrating the accomplishments of the Mercury Seven astronauts is more than just a celebration of the pioneer spirit. The film is a gorgeous dream, a poem about heroism and celebrity and ego and optimism. The...

But after spending four hours in 'Prison Town'—long synonymous far and wide with incarceration—I was sad to leave; I'll be glad one day to return. Fortunately, such matters are questions of personal choice. Many of the area's residents, including those not serving custodial sentences, have little realistic option but to remain—trapped by personal, social and/or economic circumstances that can feel as confining as any 6-by-8 cell. "Joliet, or "J-Town", is racially diverse and is known as a crime-ridden city, although the area has shown much improvement since the 1990's... The east side is generally known as the ghetto side and the west side is known as middle class, even though...

Oscar-winning film producer behind One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Amadeus and The English Patient
The career of the film producer Saul Zaentz, who has died aged 92, was marked not only by his independence (his productions were often largely self-funded) but also by his dedication to each individual film. Unlike most producers, who have numerous projects on the go, Zaentz worked on just one at a time. This resulted in a relatively short CV but one with a high share of Oscars, including three best picture winners: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Amadeus (1984) and The English Patient (1996).
Zaentz was born in Passaic, New Jersey, the youngest of five children of Russian-Polish Jewish parents, Morris and Goldie. An avid reader and a fan of pop music, movies and sport, he ran away from home as a teenager to work at the St Louis Cardinals baseball team's training camp, then rode...

From Being John Malkovich to Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Trip, actors increasingly find it liberating, even therapeutic, to play a version of themselves. This is the End is the latest film to mess around with movie star personas
The new comedy This is the End is less notable for its vision of Hollywood hit by the apocalypse than for the conceit of having its entire cast play themselves. It turns out that Jonah Hill is a prissy buffoon given to harping on about his Oscar nomination. Sweet, gentle Michael Cera is in fact a leering, cocaine-snorting lout who has toilet-stall threesomes with anyone who will oblige. Seth Rogen likes weed. And who on earth would have suspected that James Franco is gay?
Only the most credulous audience members will believe that the cast of This is the End are doing anything except performing, but there is still the tantalising...

"A New York native of Sicilian heritage, Ben Gazzara was a strongly masculine, subtly menacing screen presence with a gravelly voice that one writer described as 'saloon-cured' and another said could strip paint at 50 paces," writes Dennis McLellan in the Los Angeles Times. "The veteran actor, who died Friday in New York City, found fame on Broadway in the 1950s, starred in the TV series Run for Your Life in the 1960s and was closely identified on the big screen with independent filmmaker John Cassavetes."
In Cassavetes's Husbands (1970), The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) and Opening Night (1976), "he plays varieties of himself, as Cassavetes saw him: the moderate man who loses his head and takes immoderate action," blogs the New Yorker's Richard Brody. "Husbands, in particular, finds Gazzara accomplishing one of the most astonishing, and moving, feats ever filmed: he steals a movie from Cassavetes and Peter Falk…. The movies...

Prolific actor who built a 60-year career in the Us and Europe
Few screen debuts have equalled the searing malevolence of Ben Gazzara's Iago-inspired Jocko De Paris in The Strange One (1957). The role, which he had created on stage, became forever associated with this intense graduate of New York's method school of acting.
Gazzara, who has died aged 81 of pancreatic cancer, continued his stage career in modern classics including Epitaph for George Dillon and as the humiliated and vengeful George in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1976). He also achieved popular acclaim through television series – notably Run for Your Life (1965-68) – and in movies for his friend John Cassavetes and other directors including Otto Preminger, Peter Bogdanovich, David Mamet, Todd Solondz and the Coen brothers.

Ben Gazzara died today at 81, of pancreatic cancer. As an actor, he's one of the last of a generation: trained at the Actors Studio, he went on to create a 60-year career. After success on Broadway, Gazzara starred in films like Otto Preminger's "Anatomy of a Murder" and as the terminally ill lawyer of the TV series "Run For Your Life." And while he later created memorable performances in films like "The Big Lebowski," "Buffalo 66" and "Happiness," he may have been best known as part of the repertory group that defined many of John Cassavetes' productions, including "Husbands," "The Killing of a Chinese Bookie" and "Opening Night." "Opening Night" is also where Gazzara met Peter Bogdanovich, a longtime admirer who became his champion and directed him in two films, "Saint Jack," an adaptation of Paul Theroux's novel in which Gazzara portrayed Jack Flowers, a...

London — Veteran British broadcaster Jimmy Savile, a famously eccentric culture figure, has died at his home in northern England. He was 84.
Savile, known for his garish tracksuits, chunky gold jewelry and boundless enthusiasm for pop music and charity work, was the host of two long-running British television programs and claimed to have been a longtime confidant to Prince Charles and ex-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Rarely seen without his trademark large cigar, Savile had initially worked in a coal mine as a teenager before embracing music and built a national profile as a disc jockey – first in Britain's dance halls and later on radio, including the renowned Radio Luxembourg.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed that officers had been called Saturday to Savile's home in the city of Leeds, northern England, and said that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. The cause of Savile's death is not yet known.

"A bloated hagiography that affords less insight the longer it goes on," begins Nick Schager in Slant, "George Harrison: Living in the Material World spends nearly four hours on the life and times of the quiet Beatle in order to let us know that he was a gentle, artistic soul interested in Eastern spirituality. As anyone even remotely familiar with the Beatles or Harrison's solo career already knows such things, it's disappointing to discover that Martin Scorsese's documentary has little else to say."
The Telegraph's Mick Brown couldn't disagree more: "Scorsese, of course, has never baulked at a thorough examination of his musical heroes, as his previous two-part film on Bob Dylan, No Direction Home, demonstrated. But it's reasonable to ask whether Harrison really merits the same treatment. I had my doubts. Every movie buff appreciates a cinematic list. The arrival of vast information on a subject we love so dearly will always be welcomed with open arms. And what better than the esteemed list of all-time greatest films? Whether it’s a monumental effort like Empire’s The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time, or the country-specific AFI list of 100 Greatest American Films, there’s no denying the lasting appeal and insight a list can offer to reminiscence about old favourites and to put us on our way for new discoveries. After all, they’re usually spot on, having polled critics, filmmakers, and a devoted public who know exactly what makes a motion picture entertaining, important and timeless.
The problem is, of course, that after so many years, we’re used to reading the same old lists over and over again – how many times have we been told that The Godfather or...
