The BBC will release partially lost Doctor Who story The Celestial Toymaker on DVD and Blu-ray, complete with animated episodes, in June.
The animation of 1966 William Hartnell Doctor Who story The Celestial Toymaker was confirmed in December last year, just before David Tennant’s 14th Doctor went up against Neil Patrick Harris’ version of the character.
The BBC has now released the artwork for the DVD and Blu Ray, which you can see here.
Thanks to Amazon, we also know that it will be released on the 10th of June.
The story, written by Brian Hayles with rewrites by script editor Donald Tosh, saw First Doctor William Hartnell and his companions Steven Taylor (Blue Peter icon Peter Purves) and Dodo Chaplet (Jackie Lane) battle the titular Toymaker, plsyed by Michael Gough, as he forces The Doctor to play the impossible Trilogic Game. The house lights dim, the sun rises on its first performance, and a powerful voice belts out: “Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba,” the first lyrics of “Circle of Life.” Lindiwe Dlamini, a member of the ensemble dressed in a white dress, holding African bird puppets in either hand with another on her head, nervously waits in the wings as she readies to take the stage in the opening number of Disney’s Broadway adaptation of The Lion King, the 1994 animated hit film about a lion cub who overcomes adversity and accepts responsibility for his pride and land to become king of the jungle.
“You didn’t know how the audience was going to receive it, [but] the energy was beyond belief,” Dlamini recalls to Et. The actress was 29 years old when she was cast in The Lion King, which opened on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Nov. 13, 1997. Doctor Who series 10 strikes gold with Knock Knock - and there were some interesting references in it, too...
This article contains lots of spoilers for Doctor Who.
See related Power Rangers, boob armour, and impractical costumes
Knock, Knock is a real treat - a spooky, atmospheric tale with an emotional core and some brilliant guest performances. And in a sense it’s a real treat for this writer too, as it’s one of those Doctor Who episodes that’s so fresh and unlike anything the series has done before in its 54-year history (intentionally or otherwise) that this article is significantly shorter than usual; we hope that’s okay. But as ever, if you think you’ve spotted something we’ve missed, please do leave it in the comments below...

As our Premier League existence hangs in the balance, the club’s hierarchy thought it would be a good idea for the squad to get some warm weather training under their belts.
Many fans see it as the players being rewarded despite their poor form, but several of the team – Steven Taylor in particular – have come out to say the trip will aid their preparations. So what exactly can the break achieve?
The club’s enforced break due to not being able to progress in the cups – again – gave them the perfect opportunity to get away from the doom and gloom that often surrounds the club and come together as a team. If a bit of warmer weather can help the team get a smile on their face and come back in brighter spirits, then why not?

If there’s one thing we can gleam from Steve McClaren inexplicably fielding the same 11 on Monday just two days after a gruelling 90 minutes against Everton, it’s that he doesn’t believe he has an actual squad of players at Newcastle United he can trust.
The game after the boxing day fixtures is historically the match where you would usually rotate but it saw the likes of Florian Thauvin, Siem De Jong, Cheick Tiote and Yoan Gouffran stationary on the bench at the first whistle, and you just have to wonder if McClaren has given up on anyone outside his first 11-13 men.
Against Arsenal today, the safe bet would once again be on Newcastle being unchanged though McClaren is forced into one move with a hamstring injury seeing Vurnon Anita sidelined, with Tiote expected to be his replacement. Rob Elliott is also a huge...

Steve McClaren is yet to win a Premier League game this season and the Magpies’ boss has admitted that the international break has slowed down his learning process, according to the Shields Gazette.
Newcastle’s next fixture sees them travel to London for a Monday night clash against West Ham United on September 14.
McClaren will be desperate to grab his win of the season at Upton Park and turn some positive performance into three points.
Speaking to the Shields Gazette, McClaren stated the importance watching league games in order to learn about his new side.
He said:
“We want to keep playing, because that’s when I learn. The games are the test.
“We want to get this team winning as quickly as possible.”
“At the present moment, we’ve got good experience in people like Colo (Fabricio Coloccini) and Steven Taylor.

A glorious point at Old Trafford last weekend was magnified by Newcastle United’s competent 4-1 mauling of Northampton Town mid-week.
The Mags are flying again and despite being shot down away at Swansea in the second game of the season, they are beginning to flap their newly purchased Florian Thauvin-shaped wings as they look to land three points on Saturday (12.45pm Kick-off). Steve Mcclaren has been tactically savvy over the last two fixtures and tomorrow he has the daunting task of selecting a team capable of destroying Arsenal at home.
It’s not an easy task. The Newcastle boss will face a (previously unheard of) selection headache due to the number of players currently in-form. Does Daryl Janmaat return a right-back or does Chancel Mbemba deserve to stay there? Will Steven Taylor start alongside Fabricio Coloccini after his sublime showing against the Red Devils? Is...

Aleksandar Mitrovic made his full debut for Newcastle United as Steve McClaren dropped Papiss Cisse and brought in Ayoze Perez for the injured Moussa Sissoko. The Magpies’ boss showed a boldness with his attacking team selection and the haunting cobwebs that had miserably stuck the team together at the Liberty Stadium were blown away as Newcastle played fast, confident, counter-attacking football and earned a well-deserved point at Old Trafford.
The Magpies remained positive throughout the whole game and Manchester United’s counter-attacks and crosses were well blocked by the Magpies’ defence as they continued to frustrate their opposition. McClaren’s game-plan worked and despite sticking with a 4-2-3-1, Gabriel Obertan, Georginio Wijnaldum and Ayoze Perez’s work-rate and ball retention complimented the shape better than it did against Swansea last weekend. The Red Devils were wasteful in possession and peppered Newcastle’s box with wasteful...

Newcastle United ended a run of seven successive away defeats by claiming a battling point at Old Trafford against Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United.
Aleksandar Mitrovic even had a couple of chances for the Magpies on his full debut, but in truth it was Newcastle’s defence that starred in Manchester to earn Steve McClaren a 0-0 draw on his return to his old stomping ground.
Florian Thauvin also made his Newcastle debut off the bench as Tim Krul and Fabricio Coloccini in particular kept the Red Devils at bay.
In terms of McClaren’s starting line-up at Old Trafford, Steven Taylor came in for the suspended Daryl Janmaat, with Chancel Mbemba shifting to right-back, while the injured Moussa Sissoko was also replaced by Ayoze Perez. Additionally, Aleksandar Mitrovic made his full Newcastle debut, coming in for Papiss Cisse up front.

The more things change at Newcastle United, the more they stay the same. Steve McClaren’s “evolution” on Tyneside is now more than two months old yet the Magpies’ defensive deficiencies and ill-discipline are not even close to being resolved.
After gifting goals to both Bafetimbi Gomis and Andre Ayew – both former long-term Nufc targets – McClaren’s men went down 2-0 to Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday. Newcastle have now conceded 194 Barclays Premier League goals since the start of the 2012-13 season, more than any other side in the division – and until those problems are resolved, they will not move forward under McClaren.
Following their capitulation in south Wales – when Daryl Janmaat received the Magpies’ fifth red card in 12 games after 41 minutes – Newcastle have now lost their last seven Premier League away matches, scoring just once in the process, and they haven’t...

Panic stations should certainly not be taking hold, but Newcastle United have suffered yet another defeat in pre-season – this time a 1-0 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach at St James’ Park – and they just do not look quite right yet under Steve McClaren.
Undoubtedly this was a step-up in opposition compared to what the Magpies have faced to date, but in all honesty Thorgan Hazard’s brilliant winner was a rare bit of quality in an otherwise turgid affair. It was obvious for all of the 21,088 present at St James’ that this was a pre-season match, because it’s pace was practically non-existent.
That’s all of the Magpies’ pre-season fixtures gone now and, with Southampton visiting the North East for the Premier League opener next weekend, McClaren is still searching for a defensive formula that works. Even the home debuts of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba and...

Steve McClaren’s appointment as Newcastle United boss in June was supposed to herald a complete break from the previous regime.
No more Steve Stone. No more John Carver. And no more Alan Pardew.
Things at St James’ Park were to work differently and the club would be completely rebuilt from within. And McClaren has now revealed that it is arguably his predecessor’s biggest mistake at St James’ Park that he is determined to rectify as soon as possible: the lack of leadership at Newcastle.
Owen Humphreys/Pa Wire
Fabricio Coloccini’s Toon future is unclear and there has been much debate about who exactly the Argentine would hand the Nufc captain’s armband over to should he reunite with Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace.
Jack Colback perhaps? The Geordie midfielder been entrusted with the responsibility of skippering the side on three occasions during the pre-season...

Steve McClaren defended his decision to play a makeshift back four during Newcastle United’s loss to Portland Timbers 2 – insisting some of his senior defenders were not injured but could not be risked on the artificial pitch.
The Magpies succumbed to a 4-3 defeat at Providence Park – their second in three Us tour games – despite Georginio Wijnaldum’s goal just six minutes into his debut and a brilliant brace from Rolando Aarons.
In fact, Newcastle conceded three goals from long balls into the box, and two from set-pieces, as the makeshift back four of Gael Bigirimana, Shane Ferguson, Lubomir Satka and Aarons were pulverised in the air.

There is a never a “simple” friendly where Newcastle United are concerned. This one, in the sweltering California heat, brought a thunderbolt of an own goal, a disallowed effort, a controversial red card, an apoplectic Steve McClaren – oh, and a debut for the Magpies’ new £14.5 million man.
Georginio Wijnaldum – who wore the No 5 shirt, which the Magpies insist has not been confirmed as his squad number, despite the rumours – came off the bench to make his debut in the 69th minute and excite Toon supporters who were left bemused by Massadio Haidara’s slightly harsh dismissal for a high boot just minutes earlier.
James Kiffe scored an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime own-goal in the 48th minute to give Newcastle a slender victory – although David Estrada did have a goal disallowed for Sacramento just moments later – and that proved to be the difference, but it was Haidara’s red...

Georginio Wijnaldum is “looking forward” to potentially making his Newcastle United debut against Sacramento Republic this weekend after training with the squad for the first time.
The £14.5 million signing from Psv Eindhoven touched down in California on Wednesday and took part in his opening Magpies pre-season training session on Thursday.
While the Dutchman is hoping to make his debut against Sacramento on Saturday night (Sunday morning in the UK), Steve McClaren has insisted he will assess the attacking-midfielder’s fitness before throwing him into the fray.

Speaking to nufcTV after his first Newcastle training session on Thursday, Wijnaldum said ahead of the game:
“Yes I look forward (to making my debut against Sacremento) to playing with my new team as I want to play with my teammates on the pitch.
“Today I could see how good they are so I want to see them during the game.

Newcastle United touched down in the USA on Sunday primed for their three-match tour with 23 of their 24-man squad in tow. New £14.5 million signing Georginio Wijnaldum will join up with the rest of the squad after flying out separately on Wednesday, completing the tour party.

Schalke would be willing to listen to offers of around £10 million this summer for the 23-year-old due to the fact he is entering the final year of his contract.
Defenders are high on the Magpies’ priority list as they look to strengthen this summer and The Daily Mail claims that Schalke, whose manager Roberto di Matteo recently resigned, are contemplating offloading him.

A player who has attracted interest from the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid in the past, Matip can operate a centre-back or defensive-midfield.

Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson could be on his way out of St James’ Park this summer, with Leeds United reportedly considering making a move for the centre-back.
The Mirror claims that Leeds are aiming to recruit three defenders this summer and that Williamson is one of their key targets alongside Gareth McAuley.
While McAuley’s West Bromwich Albion contract is up next month and so he could move to Elland Road on a free transfer, Newcastle would demand a fee of around £1.5 million for Williamson.
Barringotn Coombs/Empics Sport
With the Magpies having reportedly been offered Schalke defender Joel Matip in a £10 million deal, and with the club keen to strengthen at centre-back, Williamson could be allowed to depart should recruits be found.

There are only so many times Newcastle United supporters – never mind players – can hear John Carver talk about his “passion” and “commitment” to the head coach role.
Hull City’s home defeat to Burnley and Newcastle’s first point since February 28th have ensured that the Magpies’ Premier League destiny is in their own hands – but, if they are going to finally win a match at the 10th attempt, then their interim head coach needs to sing from a different hymn sheet.
After every single match, particularly following the eight consecutive defeats between February 28th and May 9th, Carver has taken pride in announcing that no-one could possibly be more “passionate” or “dedicated” to the role than himself. He has also enjoyed repeating over and over again that he has ensured his players have understood the importance of pulling on the black-and-white-striped shirt and giving their all.

Newcastle United have conceded 61 goals in the Premier League already this season, the second most in the entire division. They may be struggling to put them in the back of the net at the other end, but allowing their defence to be breached with such regularity means that winning games consistently becomes extremely difficult.
Steven Taylor has spent a large portion of the season out injured, Fabricio Coloccini has looked a shadow of his former self and his leadership has been severely wanting, while the less that is said about Mike Williamson’s 2014-15 campaign the better.
What’s concerning is that, aside from Paul Dummett – who has also had fitness issues – Newcastle have the same three centre-backs in their squad that they did during the 2009-10 Championship-winning season. Five years on and the Magpies have made precisely zero progression in this department.

It’s not all doom and gloom at Newcastle United right now. They may be stuck down in 15th in the Premier League and fighting for their top-flight future, but they are at the very summit of another table – unfortunately it just so happens to be the injury table.
This is a sight that Newcastle fans have seen all too often in recent years, and their injury room currently contains 10 players – two more than second-placed Queens Park Rangers.
Papiss Cisse (knee), Adam Armstrong (thigh), Siem de Jong (thigh) and Paul Dummett (hamstring) have all joined the list this week, rocketing the Magpies right to the top.
Richard Sellers/Empics Sport
Rob Elliot (thigh), Rolando Aarons (hamstring), Jak Alnwick (wrist), Massadio Haidara (knee), Cheick Tiote (knee) and Steven Taylor (calf) were already receiving treatment before the beginning of this week, while four more of their teammates have now joined them.

Arguably two of Newcastle’s greatest performers of the last Premier League era.
Arguably two of Newcastle’s perennial under performers of the last two Premier League seasons.
How do you solve a couple of problems like Fabricio Coloccini and Tim Krul?
Well, one way to do it, and the way that every other professional club in the world chooses to do it, is to have a squad brimming with players that are competing for places in the starting XI.
This is something that has gone out of the window since The Magpies returned to the Premier League in 2010.
Tim Krul has an able deputy in Rob Elliot, but the gulf in class between the pair is always evident.
Even though Rob has proved himself to be a good ‘keeper when called upon in the last two seasons, often producing Man of the Match performances along the way,...

Mike Williamson has apologised to Newcastle fans and his teammates for the red card he picked up at Leicester City yesterday.
Sent off for two yellows, the second off the pitch foul on Jamie Vardy sparked huge controversy when manager John Carver insinuated post-match that his defender had got himself sent off on purpose as an “easy way out” of his club’s relegation woes.
Williamson now misses the next two crucial games for The Magpies; Saturday’s home game against West Bromwich Albion and the trip to Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, 16th May.
In a statement to the Wardle Whittell Agency, Williamson defended himself against his manager’s accusation;
“I would like to apologise to the Newcastle supporters and my fellow teammates for getting sent-off during yesterday’s game.”
“There was absolutely no intent to hurt Jamie Vardy or get sent-off.

Any transfer work done behind-the-scenes for this summer’s window will be thrown out of the window if they relegated, reports The Chronicle.
Of course, that almost doesn’t need reporting as common sense would suggest that most targets would suddenly have a change of heart should the Premier League club courting for their services no longer offer top-flight football but the wider implications of this current crisis Is worth discussing.
It’s understood that exciting and flamboyant Marseille prospect Florian Thauvin has been in recent talks with Newcastle over a summer switch to St. James’ Park, alongside his club team-mate, pacy Senegalese forward Andre Ayew.
Both names will of course already be familiar to Newcastle fans as The Magpies have been chasing their signatures for the past several seasons.

From the Queen Vic to the Tardis. As Eastenders prepares to mark its 30th anniversary, we look back at its encounters with Doctor Who...
Back in the mid-eighties an actor who played "Third Assistant" in a Doctor Who story called The Savages (1966) and the director of another Doctor Who adventure, The Underwater Menace (1967), came together to create one of the BBC’s most successful television shows.
And when they got together, it was murder. Well, not quite. (Though the first episode did feature a victim who would later die, fact fans.) But what they did create was Eastenders.
Broadcast on February the 19th 1985 (in between episodes one and two of The Two Doctors), this creation of Who alumni would go on to share numerous links with the long-running science-fiction for years to come. Even its time-slot owes much to the adventures of everyone’s favourite Gallifreyan.

Even though there was some debate yesterday about whether Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini were actually injured and would miss the Qpr game, the last update from the Chronicle said that it was unlikely that they’d be out for the month the national papers were reporting.
They suggested that Taylor might actually make the game, and that Coloccini would be assessed later in the week, but whether their assessment of the former is right, the opinion on the Argentinian captain is not correct, as he’s definitely out.
According to Alan Pardew, Coloccini will miss at least the next three games – Qpr, West Ham and Burnley – and should be back in time for the run of difficult games that come between the two Burnley fixture, including gems against Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd and Spurs in the cup. The “easier” games come in the shape of Everton and Sunderland,...

Either Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini are injured, or they aren’t; it’s really not rocket science.
News from around the country this morning, and overnight suggested that both would definitely miss the Wpr game, and were likely to miss as much as a month out of the first-team. But then, in their characteristically contrarion manner, the Chronicle have suggested that Steven Taylor will in fact train this week and that Coloccini will be assessed ahead of the home game with Harry Redknapp’s chancers.
So, according to the local papers, who have no access to the club aside from mysterious “sources” who presumably meet them under the cover of Grays multi-story car-park and talk in whispers around their massive comedy collars, suggest the muscle and knee injuries aren’t bad at all.
That would fit in with Alan Pardew’s claims that he wasn...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: Newcastle are finally starting to play a bit of football (or are at least winning games), the media are falling over themselves to accuse us all of having expectations of Europe now that our unreasonable expectations of not getting relegated are done with, and Christmas is in the air.
Unfortunately, because it’s November, and the busiest part of the season is coming up, Newcastle have been hit with yet another injury crisis. Steven Taylor, Mehdi Abeid, Fabricio Coloccini and Rolando Aarons have joined the walking wounded list, with Cheick Tiote’s fitness uncertain, Davide Santon and Emmanuel Riviere possibly getting close to fitness and a host of longer term injuries (in Gabriel Obertan, Siem De Jong, Curtis Good and Jonas). With a full team’s worth of players now out, Newcastle are currently joint top of the Premier League injury table – along with Everton.

After Gael Bigirimana was linked with a loan move to Yeovil Town – which the League One side apparently ruled out in the end – Alan Pardew has come out in the press to talk up the value of loans, since the club have enjoyed some success from them.
Such a blanket statement is wrong however, as Newcastle have only profited from the right loans, and simply sending out youth talents anywhere and hoping they come good is not the right move.
Yes, Newcastle profited from loan moves for Mehdi Abeid, Paul Dummett and Sammy Ameobi (to a lesser extent), and in the past have seen a good developmental move for Steven Taylor, but it is the circumstances of those loans that matter as much as the destination. Alan Pardew must heed the lesson of Man City and West Brom and play Paul Dummett at centre-back, especially with Fabricio Coloccini potentially injured for a few games. He should be the man to play alongside either Steven Taylor (preferably, though he could be injured) or Mike Williamson (at a push).
As Bob Moncur so aptly pointed out this week, Dummett is an old fashioned centre-half, and he is far more comfortable playing there than he is at full-back where he is still learning the game. The longer he plays at full-back the more wrong habits he’s going to learn; the reason he isn’t as comfortable at full-back is his positional naivety and his inability to mark the space behind him.
Dummett has himself stated that he feels comfortable at centre-back:

According to Nufc.co.uk, Remie Streete has been recalled from his loan spell with League One side Port Vale after injuries limited the available options at centre-half.
With the club down to three centre-halfs with the loan of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to Roma, injuries were always going to be something of an issue, and we’ve already seen all three of those players ruled out at various stages this season. Luckily Alan Pardew remembered that Paul Dummett was supposed to be a centre-back, so cover was there, but it’s still not enough to have two fit centre-backs.
For that reason Streete finds himself back in the fray, despite being told he could join Port Vale for longer after a successful first month. He was due to be with the Valiants until 4th January, but with injuries to Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor, Alan Pardew has...

So much for famous cup nights being a thing of the past with Newcastle United.
Perhaps because of the tide of good feeling that swept in with the unexpected but hard-fought victory over Manchester City in the last round, Newcastle have taken a full allocation of 5400 for the quarter final tie at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham aren’t going to know what’s hit them.
The question now will be whether Alan Pardew will rest some of his first team with the hugely important home derby against Sunderland coming up just days after on Sunday the 21st. Purposefully weakening the team against City paid off after all, but now some of the key players in that victory – Dummett and Abeid in particular – are in the first team proper, so playing them as cover isn’t an option.

When Kieron Dyer was at Newcastle, his repeated hamstring injuries were discussed almost weekly during his absences by the local media – and indeed by the club’s coaching staff – it was either down to lifestyle choices, his running style (research suggested he ran wrong) or it was because he was being over-conditioned. Like all professional footballers, he was unreasonably expected to be 100% for almost 40 weeks a year, when other athletes only went through conditioning just before fights or races, and it was inevitably taking its toll.
The question of over-conditioning, and the dangers of pressing players too hard on the training ground has reared its head again this week, as Newcastle continue to lose players to injury away from matches. It’s a little easier to take injuries when they happen in plain view – as Coloccini’s did against West Brom – but when the problems occur during preparation,...

Another England squad, another snub for most of the North East’s best English players. No surprise there then, but once again Roy Hodgson has included some players who seem to be being picked not on merit, but on their names.
Yes, Rolando Aarons is not quite match fit at the minute, and he’s not played a great deal of football this season, but as a substitute for England, he would be a massive secret weapon, particularly as the squad is so set up for pace. But the best he gets is a place in the U20 squad – a waste of time.
And what of Jack Colback and Steven Taylor, two of the hardest working stars of Newcastle’s five game unbeaten run in all competitions?

In his own words, Newcastle fans should evaluate Alan Pardew’s season after his side had got to the ten game point. That point has been and gone, with the unlikely but not unwelcome win against Liverpool at St. James’ Park, and now the manager has been nominated for the Manager Of The Month award for the Premier League, and things are looking up.
But it’s important to still count games 1-7, as well as the excellent 8, 9 and 10, and a lot more happened in those games of note than just victories.
So how does the whole ten game run rate? We’ve seen giant screen near disasters, the emergence of the most unlikely heroes in Gabriel Obertan, Steven Taylor and Mehdi Abeid, and we’ve put sides to the sword who would usually steam-roll Newcastle without a second thought. But we’ve also seen injuries, capitulation,...

Steven Taylor has spoken to the Shields Gazette to paint a picture of the strains placed on youth talent at Newcastle United by saying any young player who is not immediately ready to take their chance in the first team to leave and find another job.
Newcastle’s newly refocused strategy of blooding youth players, rather than relying entirely on imported talent has brought younger talents into focus, and so far this season the progress of the likes of Rolando Aarons, Paul Dummett, Sammy Ameobi and Mehdi Abeid has been a big plus. Obviously some of those players – Ameobi and Abeid in particular – have been around for a while now, and didn’t take their chance as quickly as Taylor is suggesting is necessary, but you can see the tide is changing.

Just days after overcoming Man City at the Etihad with a significantly weakened first team, Alan Pardew lines his Newcastle side up to face Liverpool at St. James’ Park, knowing that he needs to keep building momentum.
Liverpool meanwhile are stuttering by their own lofty expectations: after missing out narrowly on the Premier League trophy last year they’re struggling to maintain a top four position, and serious questions are – prematurely – being asked.
Team News
Davide Santon, Siem De Jong and Curtis Good (remember him?) remain side-lined in the long or no-idea-at-all term, and Cheick Tiote is confirmed as out with the calf problem that has ruled him out since he was away with the Ivory Coast.
Papiss Cisse, Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson were all back in training this week, and Taylor should be...

A lot of talk has already appeared regarding who Newcastle boss Alan Pardew should play tomorrow against Liverpool: in the wake of the Man City game, the manager now has one of the most difficult decisions he’s ever had to make. Had that youthful team lost, he could have cast all of those players off as back-up to the first team (as most of them seemingly were by their selection in the first place), but now he has the added head-ache of having to drop some players who have played out of their skin.
Should Ryan Taylor play? Should Rolando Aarons? Is Papiss Cisse fit enough to come straight back in? What about Steven Taylor? These are just some of the questions that face the manager as he stares at his note-pad wondering which players to put out against Brendan Rodgers’ side for the early kick off, and overall,...

Alan Pardew has something of a selection crisis on his hand, after two wins and 20 used players in the last two games. And while it would be silly to imagine that the team that starts against Liverpool tomorrow will look anything like the one that overcame the odds and Man City’s team of millionaire internationals, the League Cup victory might well have raised some more questions for him.
And because of the injury to Cheick Tiote in the key defensive holding role, the manager could use some of the points he has seen over the last two games to assess which candidates are the best to replace the missing Ivorian, including Mehdi Abeid, who starred in the City win with an impressive performance.
It seems unlikely that Pardew will go with the same team as he did against City, since he openly expressed before the...

The injury to Cheick Tiote yesterday in the warm-up came as a significant blow to those Newcastle fans who simply can’t accept the value of Vurnon Anita, and it’s unclear whether he will be back for the Spurs game.
The mysterious head injury that forced a last minute change to the starting line-up is a frustration, but if it leads to a longer term absence, Alan Pardew might be forced to reconsider his enduring 4-2-3-1 formation. But then again, nothing has stopped him starting with it so far.
Paul Dummett also hobbled out of the game with a muscular problem that could keep him out – though in honesty he was suffering a torrid time on the left, and deserved to be substituted anyway. If he’s out Haidara will be a more than adequate replacement, and frankly he should be first choice anyway.

Once more we come to another weekend with newspapers looking for something to sell to Newcastle fans. One paper inevitably went for the Andy Carroll angle again, to the collected groans of all Magpies fans, but the most chose to run with the bizarre suggestion that Newcastle would be looking to bring Jamaal Lascelles in from Forest in January.
Now, that’s not bizarre in itself of course, as Newcastle clearly need more options at centre-half, particularly with Mike Williamson and Steven Taylor both missing games in recent weeks due to minor injuries. What seems most odd is the fact that most reports are suggesting that to bring the young England star to the club, Newcastle will send Taylor the other way.
There has already been speculation that Lascelles might be on his way back earlier than anticipated when he was named in the club’s...

It is sometimes unfair the criticism that Newcastle players are forced to endure, and the effect on their performances should never be under-estimated, particularly in light of Gabriel Obertan’s surprisingly good form.
Like the Frenchman, Steven Taylor is another squad member who has taken a lot of flak in the past, mostly thanks to his behaviour in trying to get the crowd behind the team and is uncanny knack for mistakes. But Taylor doesn’t deserve as much hatred as he is occasionally the target of, because his only crime is being committed to the cause but without the footballing brain to make him a true great.
Mike Williamson might be the man chosen to play alongside Fabricio Coloccini more often than not, but Taylor’s commitment to the cause and his obvious willingness to put his body on the line should mark him as the better option,...

Sometimes you have to really wonder what is wrong with Alan Pardew. The man who put Demba Ba on the wing, and then Papiss Cisse, and then Shola Ameobi, has been responsible for diluting the talents of some of Newcastle‘s best players in recent years. He didn’t know what to do with Hatem Ben Arfa, so he sent him out on loan, and he didn’t know what to do with Sylvain Marveaux so he sent him out on loan too. Naturally when Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was judged “not right” for the Premier League, Pardew and the transfer team sneakily sent the Frenchman out on loan to Roma, fully expecting him never to return, despite not having an immediate replacement lined up.
That was lunacy to even the fans who have no grasp of the technical side of football: going into the season with three...

In some ways you really have to commend what Newcastle have achieved in the transfer market since 2009. They’ve set their own rules and their own valuations, and have gone after targets with a logical approach that means they have rarely paid over the odds on players who have turned out to be misfires. Yes, there have been high-profile mistakes like Sylvain Marveaux, Papiss Cisse (to a certain extent anyway) and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, but the real issue in all three cases is not the quality of the player or the price paid, but the manager attempting to get the best out of them.
After a summer of heady spending, something looks like it might have changed. There was already talk that the policy from now on would be the same as an over=packed nightclub – one in, one out – before the transfer window slammed shut with...

If Newcastle had more than three centre-halves at the club, there would be no question of dropping either Fabricio Coloccini and/or Mike Williamson. Unfortunately though, the first choice pairing are protected by the fact that their only competition other than the kids is Steven Taylor who mysteriously didn’t make the bench against Swansea.
But it is beyond question that the centre-backs are massively under-performing. Williamson is Williamson – he is a solid stopper, and reads the ball reasonably well, but his heading is poor (no power, no direction) and his passing is not of a Premier League quality – but it is Coloccini who is the biggest disappointment.
The Argentinian has looked off the pace this season, and worse his positional sense and ball-reading – his two greatest facets usually – have been completely off. For the first goal against Swansea he was undone by ball-watching,...

Countdown's Rachel Riley had her day brightened up in the studio by an unexpected erection.
Stop that sniggering at the back, we're being serious.
Riley posted the awkward moment from the classic Channel 4 daytime quiz on Twitter, when someone successfully found an 8-letter word that had cheeky connotations.
"Gotta love the day job!" joked the show's co-host.
Sometimes these words just pop up unexpectedly...gotta love the day job! @C4Countdown pic.twitter.com/8YGJ66C2ks

Twitter has inevitably found the incident very amusing and a few cheeky sorts have replied to Riley's message with their own smutty innuendos.
