- James Joseph Tarbuck, the son of a prosperous bookmaker, was born in Liverpool where he was twice expelled from school then fired from his first job as a garage mechanic for fooling around with a grease gun. In rapid succession he was a labourer, gardener, butcher's boy, bricklayer's mate, porter, shop assistant, chef's assistant and women's hairdresser but all the time he dreamed of being a footballer, During that time in 1958 while on holiday in Pwllheli, Wales he entered and won a holiday camp talent contest which, on his return home led him to playing pubs and clubs in Liverpool and Manchester. - Jimmy always wanted to play for Liverpool and used to go into the dressing room as a youngster to get the shirts and boots ready, anything just to be around the players, On finishing school he worked as a labourer, garage hand, laundryman, milkman and hairdresser before moving into show business by way of a holiday camp talent contest when he was 18, There were then years of struggle before the big break came, On October 17 1963 he appeared on Sunday Night at the London Palladium and was an immediate success appearing a further 3 times plus the Royal Variety Show and was chosen as the Most Promising newcomer.
