Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Update: At CinemaCon, Universal confirmed they’ll be releasing Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 in Fall 2025.
The original article follows:
The video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) quickly became Blumhouse Productions’ highest-grossing movie when it reached theatres and the Peacock streaming service back in October, surpassing the likes of Split, The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises with its haul of $295 million. So of course they’re developing a sequel, even if one hasn’t been officially announced yet. Five Nights at Freddy’s star Josh Hutcherson already said back in January that they were “nailing down the story” and hoping to get into production as soon as possible. Now Blumhouse founder Jason Blum has shared a picture that was taken at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the company that provided the...

Horror hit Five Nights At Freddy’s is getting its sequel towards the end of 2025: more on the story here.
The critical response to the Five Nights At Freddy’s film that arrived last year? Well, it was pretty much on the piss poor side. The awards cabinet for it? Pretty much empty. The audience response? Better. The box office? Very nice, thank you very much.
With that in mind, it was confirmed pretty quickly that we were going to be getting a Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 movie, and as it turns out, we’re going to be getting it really rather quickly too.
It’s been confirmed overnight that Universal has given the movie an autumn 2025 release slot. We’ve not got a specific release date at the moment, but it seems all but certain that Universal is going to pick a day in October of 2025 to unleash the movie.

We've got a huge and exciting news announcement to make fresh out of CinemaCon 2024, the highly-anticipated sequel to "Five Nights at Freddy's" will be heading to theaters in 2025. /Film's own Ryan Scott was in attendance when Universal made the announcement, a shocker to absolutely no one considering Blumhouse and Universal were fast-tracking a sequel to Emma Tammi's film adaptation of Scott Cawthon's impossibly popular video game franchise of the same name before the animatronic murder machines had a chance to recharge.
The decision was a result of the film's astronomically huge success at the box office, outperforming every other horror release of 2023, including Blumhouse and Universal's massive legacy film, "The Exorcist: Believer." What's even wilder is that "FNaF" went day-and-date with a streaming release on Peacock, meaning audiences had the opportunity to stay at home and scare themselves silly without having to dig into their pockets for tickets,...

It may have taken forever for the first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie to finally get off the ground, but it’s officially full steam ahead for the sequel.
Expect to see Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 next Halloween season, as it’s currently set for Fall 2025 release.
The announcement came via CinemaCon and social media, and arrives shortly after producer Jason Blum teased a behind the scenes photo from inside Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. The sequel hadn’t been confirmed at the time of his posting, but this news makes it official.
Released in theaters and available for streaming on Peacock on the same day, the Emma Tammi-directed Five Night’s at Freddy’s was Blumhouse’s highest grossing movie of all time. In other words, it’s no surprise that the sequel was quickly greenlit.

Is it time for six nights at Freddy’s? A sequel to horror hit Five Nights at Freddy‘s is in the works, Universal revealed at CinemaCon Wednesday.
The first film was a surprise sensation that weathered poor reviews and a day-and-date release on Peacock to land Blumhouse’s top opening of all time with $78 million. The feature from director Emma Tammi was based on the video game and counted creator Scott Cawthon as its screenwriter. It centered on a security guard played by Josh Hutcherson, who took a job at a pizzeria with murderous animatronic animals.
Tammi previously told The Hollywood Reporter of a potential sequel: “We have some loose ends that I think are going to have to come back in a sequel to be tied up.”

“Five Nights at Freddy’s,” a horror-thriller set a haunted Chuck E. Cheese-esque establishment, is getting a sequel in the fall of 2025. Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions, which backed the first film, confirmed the news at CinemaCon, the annual convention for movie theater owners that’s currently taking place in Las Vegas. But they didn’t share an exact release date, plot details or returning cast members for the follow-up.
Adapted from the popular video game, last October’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s” made a killing at the box office with $297 million globally and became Blumhouse’s highest-grossing film of all time. Those ticket sales were especially impressive because the low-budget film was saddled with terrible reviews and it landed simultaneously on Peacock, the streaming service owned by NBCUniversal. Turn on the security cameras, because Freddy Fazbear is on the loose again. “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” one of 2023’s most unexpected box-office sensation, is getting a sequel from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse.
Jim Orr, Universal Pictures President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution, announced the news on Wednesday, during the company’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas. No other news about the film — such as a release window, creative team, or cast — was unveiled.
The announcement comes six months after “Five Nights at Freddy’s” became a hit at the October box office, where it grossed $297.2 million on a mere $20 million budget. A sequel film was probably greenlit by Act 3 of the first one.

A new behind-the-scenes image from the development of Five Nights at Freddy's 2 (Fnaf 2) may have teased the arrival of another killer animatronic from the game.
Five Nights at Freddy's director Emma Tammi said in October 2023 that the team is "definitely excited" to tell more stories, hinting that the sequel could be tied to the video game's second installment.
In November 2023, Tammi revealed more details about plans for the sequel, noting that they're just "really excited to incorporate more elements of the lore" that are directly related to the series' second and third games.

It may have taken forever for the first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie to finally get off the ground, but it looks like Blumhouse is wasting no time getting to work on the sequel.
Producer Jason Blum has taken to Twitter today to share a behind the scenes photo from inside Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, where the team is working on what we can only assume are the animatronic effects for upcoming sequel Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop of course provided the standout animatronics in last year’s hit movie.
Blum teases in his tweet this afternoon, “Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is working their magic again! We aren’t sure what they’re working on, but we know it will be great!”
While the sequel had not been officially announced, it feels pretty safe to say that this tweet from Blum today is that official announcement.

Last year was a huge year for Blumhouse Productions, as the video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s became the company’s highest grossing movie of all time. Released in theaters and available for streaming on Peacock on the same day, the Emma Tammi-directed horror movie made $289 million at the worldwide box office in the final months of 2023.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is of course on the way soon, and though the sequel hasn’t yet officially received a green light, it’s only a matter of time before the animatronics return to the big screen. After all, low budget horror movies don’t make $289 million and not get sequels!
Speaking with Variety this week, star Josh Hutcherson provides an update.
“I know they’re in the process right now of nailing down the story, and they want to get going as soon as possible,” Hutcherson tells the outlet.

"Five Nights at Freddy's" is getting a sequel. As expected, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse are wasting no time in getting a sequel to last year's hit video game adaptation going. The end of the year always brings about reflection, so it felt appropriate to recall the moments that helped define 2023 in horror. As in, the unforgettable moments that shaped the conversation whether through watercooler discussions or going viral on social media. Consider this a fun trip down memory lane before 2024 ushers in its own new wave of horrors.
These ten memorable horror moments stood out, and catapulted their respective movies, video games, or TV series into the public conversation.
M3GAN – A Viral Killer Doll
Technically, one of the buzziest horror moments of the year began in 2022. From the very first look at the dancing queen in the trailer that debuted in October 2022, audiences were smitten. So much so that M3GAN went viral, and Blumhouse leaned into it in a way that ensured this early January release was a not-so-sleeper hit. We’d expect nothing less from the mind...

So we should be hearing a sequel announcement any day now… and cast member Matthew Lillard says he would be excited to come back for another Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Lillard told Syfy Wire he would love to reprise the role of William Afton. “If it does come back, and if I’m lucky to be brought back, sure, yeah. I mean, I barely got to touch him, right? I got to kill my daughter, but we know nothing about him. We know nothing about his history, about his journey.

Figuring how to get under 25s into a cinema these days seems to be a constant preoccupation for studio executives. One studio that seems to manage pretty well in this area is Blumhouse and director Emma Tammi.
The horror outfit managed to get M3GAN to go viral back in January of this year as it steamed to a very impressive box office haul of $180m (despite costing just $12m to make).
Then, in October the production company managed to top that, galvanising the under-25s again to get out and see Five Nights at Freddy’s (a film we called ‘toothless’ in our review) in droves. That film (based on a popular horror video game) went on to earn $290m from a similar low production budget as M3GAN, so it...

The videogame-to-movie hit Five Nights At Freddy’s is arriving on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, with extra features too.
A film a long, long time in gestation, last autumn we finally got to see the movie of videogame hit Five Nights At Freddy’s. And whilst it’d be fair to say the reviews were not on the kind side, the commercial performance of the movie is absolutely not to be sniffed at.
Costing around $20m to make, the film grossed just shy of $300m worldwide. An even more impressive number when you consider that it was available on streaming in the US on the day of its cinema release.
Inevitably, a sequel is going to come along a whole lot quicker than the eight years it took to make the first film. But before that, there’s the small matter of the movie’s home release. It’s...

Emma Tammi's new horror film "Five Nights at Freddy's," based on the popular line of video games, is one of the more impressive success stories of the year. The film is about a somnambulistic night watchman named Mike (Josh Hutcherson) who takes a gig watching a disused children's pizzeria, closed since the late 1980s. The pizzeria, called Freddy Fazbear's, is outfitted with an animatronic band of anthropomorphic animals like one might have seen as Showbiz Pizza back in the day. Perhaps predictably, the animatronic animals spring to life at night and slay any ne'er-do-wells in the pizzeria. The film, rated PG-13, doesn't lean into gore and mayhem, sadly, but it does contain numerous references to the original games as well as several cameos from popular YouTubers whose online commentary made the "FNaF" games popular back in mid-'10s.

Not that it wasn't already clear, but "Five Nights at Freddy's" has become a ridiculously big success story for both Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions. To further fuel that fire, with the money the video game adaptation pulled in over the weekend, it has officially crossed the $300 million mark at the global box office. All of this happening while "Five Nights at Freddy's" has been readily available to stream on Peacock at no additional cost to subscribers. A remarkable feat, to be certain.
"Freddy's" made $400,000 in its sixth frame domestically, per The Numbers. That now puts its running total at $136.9 million domestically and $163.4 million internationally for a grand total of $300.3 million. The film is certainly running out of gas and it probably won't add too much more to its total from here on out, though it still has a release in Japan set for February. Either way, this is a home run for all involved.

In the realm of horror and suspense, Blumhouse Productions has struck gold with its latest release, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” (Fnaf). The movie, adapted from a popular video game, has now become the studio’s highest-grossing film in its 23-year history. Surpassing the record previously held by M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split,” Fnaf has earned an impressive $295.5 million globally.
The film’s success is a testament to the captivating storytelling and the effective blending of horror elements that have appealed to a wide audience. The movie opened at No. 1 on October 27, pulling in a record-breaking $80 million domestically. This marked the biggest horror opening of 2023 and the second-best opening ever for a video game movie.

It was a very crowded holiday weekend at the box office, with Disney's "Wish" and director Ridley Scott's "Napoleon" taking the lion's share of attention, while Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" ended up topping the charts for a second weekend in a row in a surprise upset. While all of that was going on, Blumhouse's smash horror hit "Five Nights at Freddy's" quietly became the studio's biggest hit ever. Yes, as hard as it may be to believe, the video game adaptation now stands alone as the biggest of big hits from a studio that has delivered a great many hits over the last decade.

Blumhouse Productions has been one of the biggest names in horror for several years now, putting out movies like The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises, among many others. October 6th saw the theatrical release of their Exorcist sequel The Exorcist: Believer, which is meant to be the first entry in a trilogy… and the poor reception that movie got from movie-goers and critics alike wasn’t exactly what Universal and Peacock were hoping for when they forked over around $400 million for the rights to distribute that trilogy. But Blumhouse’s luck turned around three weeks later. That’s when their video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) reached theatres – and that movie has officially become their highest-grossing production!

Blumhouse Productions has had no shortage of box office hits over the years, including Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Sinister, The Purge, Get Out and Halloween, but it’s this year’s video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s that is the company’s biggest movie to date.

Normally, to reach the level of cult status, a film has to gain an underground popularity that breathes new life into a project that may have been otherwise overlooked. But when it comes to "Five Nights at Freddy's," the smash hit gateway horror movie had already become a cult film before it was even released. Thanks to the game's immense popularity, viral reaction videos, and numerous spinoffs, books, and toys, there was already a rabid fan base built in to ensure the "FNaF" phenomenon would translate to box office success on the big screen.
On the other hand, Richard Kelly's mind-bending masterwork "Donnie Darko" became a cult sensation that slowly gained momentum due to its complex plot that combined a teen drama with head-scratching surrealism, time travel, and alternate dimensions. There was also a giant bunny named Frank that would have blended right in among the creepy animatronics located inside Freddy Fazbear's Pizza.

Spoilers for "Five Nights at Freddy's" follow.
The old Hollywood adage, "Pain is temporary, film is forever," is normally reserved for the on-set hardships endured while filming swords-and-sandals epics like "Gladiator" or the sprawling "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Now, it seems that turn of phrase could also apply to this year's highest-grossing horror film, "Five Nights at Freddy's."
Based on the immensely popular video game series created by Scott Cawthon, "FNaF" (for short) became an online phenomenon mostly due to viral videos of YouTube influencers playing the liminal horror game that's carefully designed to produce as many jump scares as humanly possible. Set in the fictional kids restaurant Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, "FNaF" harkens back to a time when full-size animatronic bands like Showbiz Pizza's Rock-afire Explosion entertained (and slightly terrified) children of all ages.

While several big-budget movies have experienced quite a bit of trouble at the box office both this year and since the pandemic first started in general, one genre continues to stay afloat consistently: horror. And when such movies are geared toward younger audiences and inspired by source material with a rabid fanbase to begin with? Well, that's when you know you probably have a hit on your hands.
That's exactly what happened with "Five Nights at Freddy's," the movie based on the cult video game franchise that promptly smashed box office records the weekend of its release. In Emma Tammi's new horror film "Five Nights at Freddy's," based on the popular video game series, a night watchman (Josh Hutcherson) is stalked through a disused, 1980s pizza restaurant/arcade called Freddy Fazbear's by the restaurant's animatronic animal band. By the all-too-complex mythology of the film, taken from the games, the animatronics have been brought to life by the souls of missing children, kidnapped and murdered by an evil stalker in a yellow bunny costume. It's best not to delve too deeply into the "FNaF" canon, as it gets very complicated very quickly. Focus on the fact that people are being stalked and killed by robotic Chuck E. Cheese-style pizza mascots, and you'll be on surer footing.

Serving as a prequel to Richard Donner’s 1976 horror classic, The First Omen is coming to cinemas on the 5th April 2024.
Hollywood’s love of horror continues! Following the success of The Exorcist: Believer, Five Nights At Freddy’s and Saw X, The First Omen is unleashed in cinemas next year.
The First Omen is a prequel to Richard Donner’s classic horror film The Omen, which revolved around the Thorn family who are raising, unbeknownst to mother Kathy, the Antichrist.
The Omen spawned three sequels as well as a 2006 remake starring Julia Stiles and Liev Schreiber, but the original remains the most memorable and, frankly, terrifying film in the franchise. Films such as The Babadook, Let The Right One In and The Orphan owe a lot to the success and persuasive mood of The Omen.
Here’s the official synopsis:

We’ve all had imaginary friends, right? Well, probably not ones like Chauncey! Take a look at the Imaginary trailer here.
Jason Blum’s horror studio Blumhouse have been raking in the profits with Five Nights At Freddy’s, which has exceeded all expectations when it comes to dominating the box office. Horror has always been a particularly profitable genre and Blumhouse are now looking for an early 2024 hit with Imaginary.
Take a look at the first, spooky trailer below.
Starring Jurassic World: Dominion’s DeWanda Wise, Imaginary asks the terrifying question: are our imaginary friends just imaginary, or something a little more sinister? Maybe they murder people. Wouldn’t that be positively ghoulish?
Wise plays Jessica, who moves her family to her childhood home. Jessica’s stepdaughter Alice finds a talking teddy bear in the basement named Chauncey. Chauncey makes her do things, including showing a nail in her arm.

"Five Nights At Freddy's" is a global phenomenon. There is a reason why this particular video game franchise, created by Scott Cawthon, still inspires endless "Let's Play" videos on YouTube, while its expanding lore is subjected to dedicated scrutiny and theory-crafting. So, when a Blumhouse-produced "Fnaf" movie was first announced, fans were over the moon, and for good reason. For one, director Emma Tammi chose to adapt a property that is a treasure trove for eccentric horror storylines that would not only translate well onto the big screen, but would also double as the perfect getaway to horror for younger audiences invested in "Fnaf" to various degrees.
Despite some fandom misgivings about whether the film would be able to successfully capture the essence of everything that makes "Fnaf" so unique, "Five Nights At Freddy's" managed to get almost everything right. The film wastes no time setting up its intriguing premise...

Five Nights at Freddy's (Fnaf) director Emma Tammi said that she "would love to see where [the characters] go" in a potential sequel.
Peacock's Fnaf movie ended with William Afton's Yellow Rabbit suit turning on him and stabbing him as he was dragged away by the other killer animatronics.
This ending set up a possible Fnaf 2 movie focused on Afton's revenge that could directly adapt other storylines from the games.

Matthew Lillard is in his Renaissance era.
His latest film, Five Nights at Freddy’s, is smashing box office and streaming records, he has a new improv show premiering on Amazon’s Freevee next week, his Quest’s End whiskey sold out its first drop, and he runs a luxury gaming company, Beadle & Grimm’s, with four of his close friends.
“This is a really lovely little comeback moment for me,” Lillard tells The Hollywood Reporter, before reconsidering that sentiment. “I sort of want to quote LL [Cool J], ‘Don’t call it a comeback, I’ve been here for years.'”
Lillard is no stranger to a successful franchise, of course, having starred in Scream and Scooby-Doo — but the overwhelming success of the film adaptation of a popular video game about a haunted restaurant called Freddy Fazbear’s isn’t lost on him.
Freddy’s scared up an astounding $80 million at the...
