Legendary Pictures has been preparing to develop a new Godzilla film for over a year, and it looks like the studio has finally hired a director to take on the challenge. The directors name is Gareth Edwards, and he directed a fun little sci-fi film called Monsters last year. He will also rewrite the script that was written by David Callaham with another writer, who has yet to be announced.
Monsters was Edwards first feature film, so he's making a big leap into the world of big budget filmmaking. He seems like a really talented individual, and I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with Godzilla. There obviously aren't any story details, but I imagine it won't much different than every other Godzilla movie that's been made... a big monster destroying a big city.
What are your thoughts on Edwards directing a new Godzilla flick?
Here’s the press...

Legendary Pictures has finally found a director for their American Godzilla movie, British filmmaker Gareth Edwards who shot to fame in 2010 with his feature film debut Monsters. HeatVision [1] reports that Edwards is closing on a deal to develop and direct the creature feature for the production company behind the Nolan-directed Batman films, 300, Superman Returns, Watchmen, Clash of the Titans, Sucker Punch and The Hangover. As with any film the produce, Warner Bros. will co-produce, co-finance and distribute the film. [2] I had previously heard that Tim Burton was circling the project, but later decided to develop a big screen adaptation of Monsterpocalypse instead [3]. Edwards seems like a much better choice, and one that has experience telling a human story set in a world being destroyed by monsters. He also has a very good grasp on making films on a low budget (ala Robert Rodriguez) and how to use visual effects to create his vision.

Skyscrapers and giant moths beware...Godzilla is to stomp back on to the big screen.
Legendary Pictures has acquired the film rights to the Japanese monster from Toho Company, with Warner Bros to co-produce and co-finance the project.
There have been 28 movies featuring the mutant dinosaur, including Roland Emmerich's 1998 effort and six more since then. The creature has also appeared in animated series, comics, video games and books.
In a press statement, Legendary said it would announce a director for the new film in the near future.
"Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise," said Legendary chairman Thomas Tull.
"Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have...

Legendary Pictures has announced that they will start developing a new Godzilla movie based on the legendary monster. They have obtained rights to the iconic character from Japan’s Toho Company, which is responsible for over 25 Godzilla movies.
Legendary is producing the movie through a deal with Warner Bros., and hope to announce a director soon to helm the movie. Looks like that date will arrive in 2012, when the film is slated for release.
Back in 1998, director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) turned the character into a summer blockbuster that grossed $379 million worldwide.

A new Godzilla movie is coming to life, roaring back to menace America. And there's not a Roland Emmerich in sight.
Emmerich was the director of Columbia Pictures' 1998 Godzilla movie which turned out to be a monster-sized dud. Instead of spawning a westernized series of sequels, the '98 Godzilla came and went. Until today, that seemed like it was the end of the radioactive lizard's reign of terror on western soil.
And then Legendary Pictures released a news announcement today stating that the company that's brought us 300, Watchmen, Superman Returns and The Dark Knight had negotiated the rights to the big G from Toho Studios.
"Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise," said Thomas Tull, Legendary's chariman. "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we,...

We've got a soft spot for the big rubber-suited monster that the Japanese call Godzilla. For more than a half century he's been stomping his way across movie screens (and Tokyo), shattering matchstick houses and incinerating the countryside in search of…well, we're quite not sure if anyone ever really knew what he was in search of—but that's Ok, cause in his case, it was all about the journey, not the destination.
That journey is about to start all over again, according to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog. Legendary Pictures have announced that they are about to begin developing a new movie based on the legendary Toho Studios monster, having acquired the rights to the character Toho created over fifty years ago in the 1954 genre classic.
Legendary is producing the movie through a deal with Warner Bros., and hope to announce a director soon to helm the movie.

SHANGHAI -- Taking a step closer to a film co-production treaty, which is expected to take at least another two years, China and Japan are set to sign a memorandum of understanding for cinematic cooperation Friday.
Zhan Xun of the China Film Co-production Corp. and Hideyuki Takai, president of overseas promotion body UniJapan and film production giant Toho, plan to sign the seven-point agreement at the 10th annual Shanghai International Film Festival, UniJapan deputy director Takashi Nishimura said in an interview this week.
Neither country screens many of its neighbor's films, but a growing interest in working together and recent attempts to put a historically testy relationship behind them has seen investment from Japan flow into China in recent years, led by such companies as Avex and Kadokawa, Nishimura said.
"We need to deal with our unpleasant past, and this agreement is a starting point," Nishimura said, referring to regular outbursts from both sides about the treatment of Chinese by the occupying Japanese army during the 1940s.
