From extensive world-building to subtle story tweaks, Emmy-nominated visual effects teams do it all.
While movie theaters were shuttered for much of the past year and a half, it was up to TV to provide the grandest scale entertainment. And thanks to more players in the original content game, bigger budgets and better technology, projects delivered in 4K, 5K and even 8K, allowing for stunts and fantastical worlds, specifically, to stand out even more. Nowhere was this more apparent than in the crop of visual effects Emmy nominees.
Nominated in the season or movie visual-effects category, Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian” continued to wow with its innovative Stagecraft LED walls while building 360-degree virtual sets in its second season. They were all designed to immerse the viewer in the “Star Wars” set universe amid many miniature props, animatronics and practical effects. Meanwhile, that same streamer’s freshman drama “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,...

Photo: LatinX Representation It’s no secret that there’s been a significant lack of LatinX representation in Hollywood during its over-century long history. LatinX on-screen representation was essentially non-existent unless it was a common stereotypical role, some of them including the criminal, sexpot, servant, immigrant, etc. A LatinX crew member behind the camera was even rarer, especially in a leadership role, such as a director, producer, or writer. Since the first feature-length film was released, Charles Tait’s The Story of the Kelly Gang in 1906, and the first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929, the amount of critical and commercial recognition, along with award nominations for LatinX artists in Hollywood has stayed locked in the single digits. Quirky cases are a hit or miss proposition. Sometimes they are interesting, other times silly.
Rizzoli & Isles Season 7 Episode 6 looked like it was going to be ridiculous from the previews, but turned out to be much better than expected.
The case of the hour involved the murder of a cancer patient in what looked like an abandoned hospital. In actuality, it turned out to be a new wing that was still being worked on.
The suggestion that it was a ghost who killed her was silly, but it turned out to be an interesting clue.
Multiple murders, a ghost killer... sounds like something I would have heard about.

Obviously, Jenny Tate wasn't killed by a ghost, but the ghost angle suggested that the killer was familiar with the Hannah Rose legend, which stated...

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...
