Sid Krofft discovered Szarvas working at a record store and the two bonded over their love for unusual music. When Krofft began work on
H.R. Pufnstuf (1969), he asked Szarvas to compose the songs. Szarvas was not a musician, so he sang the melodies into a tape recorder, and then someone else transcribed them as sheet music.
