Ruth Ashton Taylor, a pioneering TV and radio journalist who worked with Edward R. Murrow at CBS News and was a fixture on the air in Los Angeles for decades, has died. She was 101.
Taylor’s family confirmed her death to Kcal-tv Los Angeles. Taylor, who grew up in Long Beach, was the first woman to have an on-air news role in Los Angeles when she joined what was then CBS’ Kstl-tv in late 1951. At the time, she was hired to deliver a “women’s segment” for the station’s daily half-hour newscast.
Taylor bristled at the notion of covering only “women’s stories” and delivered stories produced with solid journalistic principles. Soon, she was hired to produce a similar segment for CBS’ Los Angeles news radio powerhouse Knx.
“Taylor says she always approached her stories any way she liked. She justified her attitude by saying she must be giving...

Like some of the best illustrations that graced the covers of fantasy novels and heavy metal albums in the ’70s and ’80s, Arik Roper's artwork is a portal to another world brimming with adventure and endless possibilities. Ahead of his appearance as a featured artist at MondoCon 2016 this weekend in Austin, TX, we caught up with Roper for a special "Meet the Artist" Q&A feature, and we also have a look at some of the eye-popping artwork he'll be bringing to this year's MondoCon.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Arik. What sparked your initial interest in being an artist?
Arik Roper: It was a natural path for me, being an artist. Both my parents were artists. I was surrounded by it and I instinctively was drawn toward it, and received a lot of encouragement.
Your art often transports people deep into the realms of fantasy and horror.

“I always loved posters just like I love scores and soundtracks,” Nicolas Winding Refn once told IndieWire. “It’s just something around cinema that is more about your imagination, more about what you’re going to be seeing rather than what it is you’re actually seeing. I find that very intoxicating.” Unfortunately, the art of the movie poster has become something of a dying breed in the age of blockbusters and studio tentpoles. For every couple ingenious one-sheets, there seems to be about a hundred carbon copies.

Artist William Stout produced some incredible concept designs for a Jurassic Park animation that was never broadcast.
Despite the '90s trend of turning popular films into animated TV series (Remember the Ace Ventura, Beetlejuice and Back to the Future animations? Of course not!), this particular project never got off the ground (via Flickering Myth).
What happened to the cast of Jurassic Park? Sam Neill and co-stars 22 years later
Stout put the original artwork from 1993 up for sale on his website - including pictures of John Hammond and doctors Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler, and Ian Malcolm - along with some background as to the fate of the project.
"This was not going to be a kiddy show (although kids of all ages, including myself, could enjoy it)," he wrote. "They wanted the show to be a mature primetime series with top writers and state-of-the-art television animation augmented with quite a bit of CG animation.

Twenty-two years before Jurassic World ruled the summer of 2015, the original Jurassic Park absolutely dominated the summer of 1993. Over the years, the Steven Spielberg-directed masterpiece has received a variety of tie-ins that included three (soon to be four) sequels, video games, toys, board games, books, food products, posters, and more, but one of the things it never received was a small-screen adaptation of any sort. However, based on some recently released concept art, it seems as though someone definitely tried to get something off the ground a while back. Conceptual artist William Stout has recently been releasing concept art from an unaired animated series pilot based on the hit film. The only thing that kept this "mature" Jurassic Park animated series from seeing the light of day was that Spielberg didn't give it the go-ahead. Read Stout's note about the series below: Although I own a copy, I don...

Welcome to "Jurassic Park" -- the animated series?
In 1993, Steven Spielberg's blockbuster had every tie-in imaginable -- from toys to T-shirts. The only thing that didn't make the cut was a proposed animated series that was in the works. An artist commissioned for the project, William Stout, recently revealed what was in store for Alan Grant and friends -- and it looks like the show would have "spared no expense."
Stout released concept art for the series on his official website, writing that the cartoon was "not going to be a kiddie show" -- though Stout points out that kids of all ages could enjoy it.
"They wanted the show to be a mature prime time series," Stout wrote, "with top writers and state-of-the-art television animation augmented with quite a bit of CG animation. Universal Cartoon Studios wanted a 'graphic novel look' to the series." Stout came in, showed his samples and was hired.

Over twenty years since "Jurassic Park" stunned the world and two months on from the release of the recent "Jurassic World" which garnered over $1.6 billion worldwide, some intriguing new art has gone online.
Back after the success of "Jurassic Park," Universal Cartoon Studios began developing an animated series based on the property - a series that didn't make it to fruition. All these years later, concept artist William Stout has posted a number of his own illustrations from the proposed series on his official website.
All these pieces are available for purchase, check them out below. Stout talked about the series last year with FromDirectorStevenSpielberg and said at the time he got a call about doing the project which was to be a "mature prime time series with top writers and state-of-the-art television animation augmented with quite a bit of CG animation". Universal Cartoon Studios also apparently wanted a "graphic novel look" to the show.

Mark Pellington, Roger Corman, Mick Garris, Bernard Rose, and more!
Some quick blurbs from a our vast and roaming congregation of gurus:
Mark Pellington is going to direct the pilot for Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives, a NBC drama. Here’s the Variety blurb:
The pilot, ordered in June from Jerry Bruckheimer TV and Warner Bros. TV, revolves around three couples living in a seemingly idyllic California community that becomes a hotbed of secrets and intrigue.
Written by Sascha Penn, “Husbands” is inspired by the book of the same name by Josie Brown. Penn, Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman are executive producers while KristieAnne Reed and Pellington are co-executive producers.
While best known as a feature helmer, Pellington recently directed midseason ABC drama “Red Widow.” He’s also directed and served as consulting propducer on CBS’ “Cold

As FM discussed earlier this week (see: Thomas Jane and Tim Bradstreet Keep it Raw), Raw Studios’ Sdcc panel was bound to be an explosive trend-bucker. Panel members included Jane, Bradstreet, artist Greg Staples, artist Jim Daily, screenwriter Jose Prendes, legendary artist and frequent FM collaborator William Stout, and–surprise!–Ron Perlman. As they went on and as the Raw panel came closer and closer, the room got decidedly more rock and roll as guys dressed as The Punisher came in with girls in tight mini-dresses and the number of beards in the room roughly quintupled. Once our rough and tumble crowd of around 250 people took over the room, it was time for the Raw panel to begin – though some technical difficulties shifted the schedule around and we started with an announcement that the 1980′s anthology series Alien...
