For the first time since 2019 BC (Before Covid), Christmas is starting to look like Christmas again. Employees will humiliate themselves at festive work parties. Families will guiltlessly gather around the dinner table. Whether it’s worth watching, though, is less of a sure thing.
As a festive gift from us to you, we’ve watched a selection of some of the biggest shows that are on the way, so we can help you choose what to prioritise between glasses of sherry and naps on the couch. From the return of Happy Valley after a six-year hiatus and the arrival of new drama Without Sin, to the court-case-inspired comedy Vardy v Rooney, here’s what you can expect on your screens this Christmas…...

Legendary British actress Dame Diana Rigg has passed away at the age of 82. At this stage, her cause of death is unknown, but the news was confirmed this morning and our thoughts are with her loved ones at this sad time.
Rigg received her breakout role in 1965 when she landed the part of Emma Peel in hit spy TV series The Avengers. The role of the smart, capable action heroine made her a feminist icon and Peel’s popularity helped cement the show as a success overseas. She received two Emmys during her time on the series before she left in 1968.
In 1969, Rigg starred opposite George Lazenby in James Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. She played Teresa “Tracey” di Vincenzo, who has the honor of being the only woman Bond has married in the entire franchise. The film received a mixed reception at the time, but has gone...

Diana Rigg, British icon of the 1960s, has died at the age of 82. Rigg is best remembered for her turn as no-nonsense secret agent Emma Peel in the 1965 series “The Avengers,” as well as a memorable role as Olenna Tyrell on “Game of Thrones.” The actress was diagnosed with cancer in March and her agent released a statement to the BBC saying she was surrounded by friends and family when she passed.
Rigg came to define the era known as the “Swingin’ Sixties” in London, both in terms of fashion and for the characters she played. Her role as Emma Peel came to be one of the first depictions of feminism for many, though Rigg often courted controversy later in life for her comments decrying the feminist movement and refusing to participate in it. Regardless, her turn as Emma Peel, as well as her later performance as James Bond’s only wife,...

“Brits don’t like boasters,” Rob Lowe’s high-flying U.S. cop Bill Hixon is told in the first trailer for ITV drama Wild Bill. He responds by calling East Lincolnshire a “godforsaken cabbage patch,” which nicely sums up the fish-out-of-water series.
The West Wing star plays Hixon, who is appointed Chief Constable of the East Lincolnshire Police Force in the UK in the ITV series, which launches in June. The series is produced by 42, Shiver and Anonymous Content.
Lowe’s Hixon is an analytics expert, a Moneyball-for-police type and he is in Lincolnshire to help bring down the crime rate, while also dealing with his troubled young daughter.
The show was created by The Hunted writer David Griffiths and then Awake creator Kyle Killen came on board with Silent Witness writers Dudi Appleton and Jim Keeble. Lowe acts as an exec producer as well as on-screen star.

Mackenzie Crook is a triple threat at the Emmys as the writer, director and star of the critically acclaimed comedy “Detectorists.” He’s already won a BAFTA as the creator of this character study, in which he plays Andy, a would-be archaeologist, who spends his free time with his pal Lance (Toby Jones) in search of buried treasure.
This gentle half hour explores the friendship of two men who are misfits as well as the women in their life played by Rachael Stirling and Rebecca Callard respectively. Stirling’s mother, Diana Rigg, plays her on-screen mother in season three of this Britcom. The Emmy favorite could well reap her first bid on the comedy side for her scene-stealing supporting role.

Mackenzie Crook pulls triple duty on the comedy series “Detecorists.” Besides writing and directing each of the 19 episodes, he stars as Andy, a would-be archaeologist, who spends his free time with his pal Lance (Toby Jones) in search of buried treasure. As he explained in our recent interview (watch above), he didn’t intend to wear so many hats. Rather it was his pal Ricky Gervais, with whom he’d co-starred in “The Office,” who told him that he just had to direct his scripts. “He was right. The idea of handing this over to someone else to direct after I had poured so much into it became unthinkable.”
Despite the overwhelming critical acclaim for the show (it merits a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes), Crook was content to make just two seasons of the show, as Gervais had done with “The Office.” But he thought there was more story...

Thanks to Acorn TV, the third and final season of the hit Britcom “Detectorists” is eligible for Emmy consideration. The Us-based streaming service co-produced the last six episodes of this delightful slice-of-life created by “The Office” star Mackenzie Crook. He has written and directed every episode and stars as Andy, a would-be archaeologist, who spends his free time with his pal Lance (Toby Jones) in search of buried treasure.
In just 19 beautifully crafted episodes spread out over three seasons (plus a Christmas special), Crook tells a compelling story of male friendship. While both men find love with understanding women — played by the luminous Rachael Stirling and the wry Rebecca Callard — it is their bond that resonates most with viewers (and critics).
The BAFTAs have embraced this heartfelt show, awarding it Best Scripted Comedy for season 1 in 2015 with Jones then winning Best Comedy Actor for season 3 at the recent ceremony. Although...

Catrin and a fellow writer, Buckley (Sam Claflin), reluctantly joins forces with fading matinee idol Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy) on a movie to warm the hearts of the nation and capture the imagination of the American public.

"People like films, because stories are structure. And when things turn bad, it's still part of a plan." Stx Entertainment has unveiled a new trailer for the film Their Finest, the latest feature from writer/director Lone Scherfig, of the films The Riot Club, One Day and An Education (one of my favorites). The film is a WWII-set comedy about an awkward British team that attempts to boost morale by making a propaganda film. Gemma Arterton stars as a writer, along with an impressive ensemble cast including Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy, Jack Huston, Paul Ritter, Rachael Stirling, Richard E. Grant, Henry Goodman, Jake Lacy, Jeremy Irons, Eddie Marsan and Helen McCrory. This has screened at numerous film festivals and looks immensely charming and uplifting, which may be exactly what we need right now. Enjoy. Director Lone Scherfig’s An Education was a wonderful example of a movie adaptation capturing the chaos and colour of a deeply personal coming of age novel. Her latest film goes a little further back in time to the early 1940s and a Britain plunged into the darkness of war. Their Finest tells the story of a British film crew making a propaganda film following the hell of the Blitzkrieg.
The film is based on Lissa Evans’ novel, ‘Their Finest Hour and a Half’, and has bright shining stars Gemma Arterton and Sam Claflin falling in love while all around them falls apart. Scherfig and Claflin previously collaborated on 2014’s The Riot Club. Arterton recently lead the powerful post-apocalyptic zombie fest The Girl with All the Gifts.

"Between us - we'll have them weeping in the aisles." An official UK trailer has debuted for the latest film from acclaimed director Lone Scherfig, of the films The Riot Club, One Day and An Education (one of my favorites). Her latest is a WWII-set comedy titled Their Finest about a British film crew that attempts to boost morale by making a propaganda film after the Blitzkrieg. Gemma Arterton stars as a writer, along with an impressive ensemble including Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy, Jack Huston, Paul Ritter, Rachael Stirling, Richard E. Grant, Henry Goodman, Jake Lacy, Jeremy Irons, Eddie Marsan and Helen McCrory. This is also playing at the Sundance Film Festival coming up, and it looks like it's worth catching. Here's the official UK trailer for Lone Scherfig's Their Finest, direct from YouTube (via Tfs): Catrin lives with her struggling artist husband in WWII-era London. Assuming she...

Series one also starred Rachael Stirling, Aimee-Ffion Edwards and Lucy Benjamin.

Want to make sure you don't miss anything great on the telly in the next seven days? Never fear, because Tube Talk has done all the hard work for you and smushed all of this week's must-see TV into one snappy rundown. Check out what you should be checking out below...
The 7.39: Monday (January 6) at 9pm on BBC One
