Dirty Weekend
Director: Neil Labute
Writer: Neil Labute
Producers: Duncan Montgomery, Tiller Russell, Joey Stewart
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Matthew Broderick, Alice Eve, Phil Burke
It seems Labute had a positive experience working with Alice Eve in Some Velvet Morning because here she is again headlining his cast. While Broderick can certainly enhance a film when cast correctly (think Alexander Payne’s Election), we’re curious to see what’s really going on here. Knowing Labute, there’s some trick up his sleeve, hopefully the kind that has a generous payoff. 2013 was something of a return for Labute, with Velvet and the adaptation of his play, Some Girl(s) from Daisy von Scherler Mayer both being worthwhile indie features. We’re happy to see him continuing with his own work rather than the odd remakes.

The Final was written by Joey Stewart, directed by Jason Kabolati and was one of the "8 Films to Die For" in 2010's After Dark Horrorfest. I've seen a lot of the films in this annual series, and to be honest, most of them so far have left me feeling a little underwhelmed. My expectations for this one were fairly low going in, but I was soon glad that I'd given the film a shot. The Final is by no means a waste of time, and is vastly superior to m…...

For four straight years now, After Dark Horrorfest: 8 Films to Die For has been unleashed. Eight original horror films to quench your thirst for blood and gore and screams galore. Last year I was able to check out and review their third collection of horrors (Read: DVD Review: After Dark Horrorfest III: 8 Films To Die For), and was rather excited to check out their new slate this year! Instead of cramming every review into one mammoth review, this year we'll take it one flick at a time, with this little opener stuck at the top of each one.
I watched quite a few of the Horrorfest lineup before getting to this point, and until now, I was rather impressed with this year's offerings. A few of the...

The Secret In Their Eyes (18)
(Juan José Campanella, 2009, Argentina/Spain) Ricardo Darín, Soledad Villamil, Pablo Rago. 129 mins.
Having elbowed aside the favourite (Michael Haneke's The White Ribbon) and the stalking horse (Jacques Audiard's A Prophet) to win last year's Oscar for Best Foreign Film, Campanella's relatively unlauded entry has a lot to live up to. But thankfully it delivers, being a handsome, smart, adult mystery, in which a retired legal counsellor (Darín) delves into the past to deal with an unresolved murder case. The surprise is not so much that it won the Oscar but how much it resembles the classy, sexually charged Hollywood thrillers of the 70s and 80s, from Klute to Sea Of Love. Maybe if Tom Cruise made films like this instead of the gormless Knight And Day he might reconnect with his grown-up fanbase. But then, the studios are too busy kowtowing to the...

The Final
Stars: Marc Donato, Jascha Washington, Lindsay Seidel, Vincent Silochan | Written by Jason Kabolati | Directed by Joey Stewart
For a directorial debut, with a cast of largely unknown actors and a budget that is obviously limited, The Final pretty much manages to deliver what it sets out to.
A revenge fantasy. The Final focuses on five high school students, Dane, Emily, Ravi, Alan and Jack, who decide, having been bullied and brutalised by their co-students for most of their school lives to wreck a grotesque revenge on their tormentors. Using horror films they have seen, school lessons and their own limited resources, they come up with inventive and horrible ways to repay the acts of cruelty they have suffered.
It’s a simple enough premise, and one that will strike a nerve with anyone who’s become an outcast in school. The indignities that the the five suffer are...

The Splattery goodness starts in UK theatres on August 19th. Synopsis: Tired of being one of several victims of a routine of endless bullying by the high school jocks and their socially superior girlfriends, awkward student Dane decides to turn the tables and plots to avenge the years of humiliation to which he has been subjected.

Now in it's fourth year, Horrorfest, the annual cinematic showcase for After Dark Films, has established something of a reputation as a platform for fresh, daring filmmakers to get themselves noticed. More than just a simple market for nasties, the After Dark label stands for quality by way of authenticity, delivering horror films by genre lovers for genre lovers. In addition to this yearly frightfest, After Dark recently announced a new venture to develop their own projects, in partnership with SyFy, NBC, and Lionsgate, titled After Dark Originals. Aiming to do for horror what the Sundance Institute did for the American indie, the eight slate series will begin production next month with a view towards theatrical release later this fall.
Titles featured in this year's Horrorfest include:

Horror fans generally don't have a problem with flicks that wear their influences on their cinematic sleeve. On the contrary, we actually appreciate it when a new genre film pays due homage to someone like Val Lewton, John Carpenter, or George Romero. Other flicks, unfortunately, lean way too far in the other direction, and the result is a movie like The Final -- which feels a lot like three dead-obvious homages in one confused package -- and when you're wading that deep in the pool of someone else's work, that's when we start thinking of the word "rip-off." Perhaps best described as "Saw Goes to Columbine," (although not nearly as fun or as venomous as that concept sounds) Joey Stewart's The...

The Final is a disturbing, mean-spirited teen revenge fantasy about a normal day at a normal High School. The jocks and mean girls terrorize the misfits. The misfits capture their tormentors and proceed to torture, mutilate, and murder them. The point of the picture seems to be that incidents like this can happen but after Columbine, everyone already knows that. Though it played at Horrorfest, The Final is not really a horror film though it’s presented and directed like one. It seems to be a response to the student shooting sprees that made headlines in the late 1990s, but it wants to offer easy explanations and use obvious stereotypes to make it’s point. The Final tackles a sensitive issue in an exploitative way and the result is uncomfortable but surprisingly compelling drama.
The central character of The Final is Dane (Marc Donata), an awkward student with a deadly vendetta and suicidal tendencies.

I’m still bummed out that it’s almost Thanksgiving, because that means the world has gotten back to normal and has moved on from their one month love with the horrifying, the macabre, and the supernatural. Now the only things that people are gonna care about for the next 2 months are family and tradition and joy and all that bunk. Luckily the media world hasn’t forgotten about us die hard horror lovers, and so we still get treated to great events like the After Dark Horrorfest.
