On Tuesday, the academy's Board of Governors brought in a new rule for this year's Oscars that is aimed at preventing another embarassing disqualification. Last year, a brouhaha erupted after Bruce Broughton -- a one-time governor (2003 - 2012) and current executive committee member -- emailed other members of the music branch during the nomination period to bring his title track "Alone Yet Not Alone" to their attention. His lobbying must have worked as this tune, heard in a little-seen film, reaped a Best Song bid. -Break- Join in the fierce debate about the early Oscar contenders going on right now in our red-hot forums Broughton, who lost his 1985 Score bid for "Silverado" to John Barry for "Out of Africa," penned this tune with lyricist Dennis Spiegel for a Christian film that focused on the hardships facing 18th century settlers in the Ohio Valley. The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

By Robert W. Welkos It was only last July that Cheryl Boone Isaacs, a long-time, behind-the-scenes Hollywood publicist and marketing executive, was elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The first African American and third woman to lead the prominent movie industry organization that each year hands out the Oscars, Isaacs’ election provided proof, if any was still required, that the traditionally white and male AMPAS membership was becoming more diversified. An academy veteran, she had served in various posts inside the organization’s hierarchy and produced last year’s Governors Awards. But now Isaacs tenure as president is being buffeted by controversy over a decision by the academy’s board of governors to disqualify the song Alone Yet Not Alone from a small, faith-based movie of the same name that few have seen. How deftly she navigates the controversy could prevent the dispute from tarnishing the Oscars.

The song stood out like a sore thumb. Which of the Oscar original song nominees did not belong? “Alone Yet Not Alone,” music by Bruce Broughton and lyric by Dennis Spiegel, from the religious movie of the same name (clip below) came out of nowhere. It turned out that Broughton was a former Governor, Academy member and current Music Branch executive committee member. Sure enough, on Tuesday night the Academy’s Board of Governors voted to rescind the Original Song nomination for “Alone Yet Not Alone." They had discovered that Broughton had emailed members of the committee to make them aware of his submission during the nominations voting period. The Academy will not add a nominee in the Original Song category. A few days after an unprecedented taking back of an Oscar nomination, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has offered further explanation of their motivation. Some background: On Tuesday night, the Academy’s Board of Governors voted to take back the Original Song nomination for “Alone Yet Not Alone,” from the film of the same name. With music by Bruce Broughton and lyric by Dennis Spiegel, the decision was "prompted by the discovery that Broughton, a former Governor and current Music Branch executive committee member, had emailed members of the branch to make them aware of his submission during the nominations voting period." Bruce Broughton decided to take to Facebook to openly voice his outrage, posting the following on the evening of January 29th: How do I feel? I feel as though I'm the butt of a campaign to discredit a song, the nomination of which caught people by surprise.

The Academy has elaborated on its decision to rescind the best original song nomination for "Alone Yet Not Alone," explaining that songwriter Bruce Broughton improperly lobbied "at least 70" music branch members. On Jan. 29, the Academy said that it was stripping nominations of the co-nominees for the song "Alone Yet Not Alone" writer Bruce Broughton and lyricist Dennis Spiegel, because Broughton, a former representative of the Music Branch on the Academy's Board of Governors, lobbied fellow Music Branch members via email during the voting period. Even during the hazy early morning announcements, it stuck out – a nomination for a film no one had ever heard of for a song no one had ever heard of in a particularly (and literally) vocal category. The Oscar nomination for Best Song for “Alone Yet Not Alone,” as performed by Joni Eareckson Tada with music by Bruce Broughton and lyrics by Dennis Spiegel and from the film Alone Yet Not Alone (because why not?) was weird from the start, and the truth behind it was swiftly outed by the eagle-eyed and –eared. While plenty of movie writers and entertainment sites were quick to pick up on the weird choice and what actually motivated it, Guy Lodge over at In Contention nailed it early, figuring out that the film had been given a limited release in September, aimed at the Christian market (as Lodge shared, “production company Enthuse Entertainment describes themselves as producing ‘God-honoring, faith-based...

When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for their annual awards on January 16th, 2014, suspicion rumbled around the Best Original Song category, which featured a nomination for a little heard song from a little seen film titled Alone Yet Not Alone.
Composed by Emmy winning Oscar nominee Bruce Broughton, with lyrics by Dennis Spiegel, the song is performed by quadriplegic evangelical Christian author and radio host, Joni Earekson Tada. The surprise nomination for the song from the film of the same name was withdrawn after Bruce Broughton - a former governor and current Music Branch executive committee member - emailed members of the branch to highlight his nomination.
"No matter how well-intentioned the communication, using one's position as a former governor and current executive committee member to personally promote one's own Oscar submission creates the appearance of an unfair advantage," said Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs.

"Alone Yet Not Alone," the surprise Oscar nominee for best original song, is not eligible for Academy consideration, representatives of a rival song that was not nominated are contending. But the song's nomination will not be revoked and it will remain in the race, a spokesman for the Academy tells The Hollywood Reporter. When Oscar nominations were announced Jan. 16, the inclusion of the song -- which features music by Bruce Broughton, a former member of the Academy’s board of governors who represented the music branch from 2003-2012, and lyrics by Dennis Spiegel -- raised eyebrows and even triggered outrage

Eyebrows were raised with both surprise and suspicion yesterday when it was announced that the track “Alone Yet Not Alone” — from a faith-based film of the same name — had gained an Oscar nomination, beating out tunes by both Taylor Swift and Coldplay, among others. The surprise was due to the fact that very few people had heard of either the song or its parent film. The suspicion? That the song’s cowriter Bruce Broughton had used his position as a former chief of the Academy’s music section to egregiously game the voting system and convince people to tick the box for his song.

Every Academy Awards has at least one out-of-nowhere nominee, and this year's slate of contenders is no different. Claiming the title of most obscure nomination this year is "Alone Yet Not Alone," the title track from a small independent film that's up against some big competition in the Best Original Song category.
"Alone Yet Not Alone" tells the true story of two young sisters who were captured during the French and Indian War, and was produced by a company called Enthuse Entertainment, whose self-described mission is to make family-friendly, faith-based films. According to HitFix, the movie wasn't on many people's radar -- there's no trace of it on Wikipedia, there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, and its Box Office Mojo is nonexistent -- and received a limited release in September.
So how did a film few people saw, or even knew existed, manage to snag a coveted Oscar nomination?...
