MOSCOW -- The head of Russia's state broadcasting company on Thursday criticized plans to privatize the vast structure of the broadcaster as "ill-conceived folly." Oleg Dobrodeyev, chairman of public broadcasting firm VGTRK (All State Television and Radio Co.), said that privatizing the organization's regional branches that cover the length and breadth of the country would be like "handing them to bandits." Dobrodeyev, who once headed NTV, said he was "categorically against the privatization of VGTRK." In an interview published Thursday in daily business newspaper Kommersant, Dobredeyev said a move by recently appointed Minister of Culture Aleksandr Sokolov to bring a privatization bill before the Russian parliament as early as next month could have disastrous consequences for Russian broadcasting.
