CinemaCon continues to confirm honorees for its Big Screen Achievement Awards, adding actress Ariana Greenblatt to the roster.
Greenblatt will be presented with a rising star of the year trophy at a ceremony inside the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on April 11. The honor follows Greenblatt’s role in Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster Barbie, and arrives months ahead of her follow-up in Eli Roth’s Borderlands opposite Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Édgar Ramírez and Jamie Lee Curtis.
The Big Screen Achievement Awards, hosted by official presenting sponsor the Coca-Cola Company, will also see honors doled out to Amy Poehler (vanguard award), Lupita Nyong’o (star of the year), Shawn Levy (director of the year), Joseph Quinn (breakthrough performer of the year award) and Dan Stevens (excellence in acting award).

Cate Blanchett’s Lilith travels to a planet she hates to find a massive treasure hidden in a vault in the first trailer for Lionsgate’s Borderlands. Lilith can’t do the treasure hunt alone and is forced to team up with an odd assortment of people on a planet that has an actual gully made of piss.
The trailer gives off Guardians of the Galaxy vibes, and the film obviously doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Eli Roth and Joe Crombie wrote the screenplay, based on the popular Borderlands video game franchise, with Roth directing. The action thriller stars Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jack Black as Claptrap, Ariana Gleenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Edgar Ramirez as Atlas, and Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis.

Cate Blanchett is back in a wig and a franchise, following her iconic “Thor: Ragnarok” campiness. The Oscar winner and “Tár” lead actress transforms into vigilante Lilith for Eli Roth’s star-studded “Borderlands” video-game adaptation.
Blanchett’s character is an infamous outlaw who returns to her home planet of Pandora on a mission to track down the missing daughter of the universe’s top leader, Atlas (Edgar Ramírez). Lilith enlists former elite mercenary Roland (Kevin Hart), pre-teen demolitionist Tiny Tina (“Barbie” breakout Ariana Greenblatt), her bodyguard Krieg (Florian Munteanu), mad scientist Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), and robot Claptrap (Jack Black) to help.
“These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power,” the synopsis reads. “The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.

Final Update, 1:32 Pm: Fury ended the weekend at $23.7M for Sony and Qed, so it underperformed all the tracking (gee what a surprise), social media metrics, and expectations just a little. But it will likely still make money all in after its domestic, international and home entertainment run. I understand that there were significant profit participations on this one. Fox and Reel FX’s The Book Of Life closed the weekend on the high end of our estimate with $17M and will have some playtime again over the next two weekends as no new offerings are in the family zone until Big Hero 6 bows from Disney on November 7. The other newbie, Relativity’s The Best Of Me, was soft with $10M. Gone Girl is now sitting pretty at $106.7M after three weeks in release for Fox and New Regency.

Last year, the London Film Festival was bookended by a pair of Tom Hanks movies. This year, the fest is going in a different direction with opening- and closing-night films set during World War II. The event will open with The Imitation Game on October 8 and now has set David Ayer’s Fury as the capper on October 19. The pic stars Brad Pitt, Shia Labeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña, and Jon Bernthal. Pitt and Ayer are confirmed to attend the closing-night festivities in Leicester Square with screenings to be simulcast to cinemas across the UK. The film is set in April 1945 as the Allies make their final push in the European Theater. A battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy (Pitt) commands a five-man Sherman tank crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines where they face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany. Sony’s Fury set as London closing film; Brad Pitt, David Ayer to attend
The London Film Festival (Oct 8-19) will close with the European premiere of Sony’s Second World War tank drama Fury, which stars Brad Pitt as a battle-hardened Us army sergeant leading a deadly mission behind enemy lines.

You know what makes for a movie that looks really impressive? Brad Pitt and tanks. There's plenty of that on hand in the first trailer for the upcoming World War II film from David Ayer, so come inside and check it out.
David Ayer brings a certain something to his films, and that's certainly present in this first trailer for his new film, Fury. Things start off fairly standard, with Pitt being a grizzled veteran taking a new recruit on his team and trying to keep everyone from getting killed. While this sounds like a normal plot, the action and emotion on hand in the trailer makes it seem like something very special indeed.
All I know, is that this film looks like another one that's going to get me all choked up, but in the best ways possible.

Exclusive: Composer Steven Price, who scored Gravity, has signed on to create the music for David Ayer‘s currently untitled WWII tank film, which stars Brad Pitt, Shia Labeouf, Logan Lerman, Jon Bernthal and Michael Peña. The film was put together under the title Fury. Price previously scored Edgar Wright’s The World’s End and Joe Cornish’s Attack The Block. The WWII film will be released by Sony Pictures November 12, 2014. “Steven Price’s fresh approach to scoring and his extraordinary creativity make him the perfect collaborator for my film,” said Ayer. The film is set near the end of WWII in April 1945, as the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre. A battle-hardened army sergeant (Pitt) commands a Sherman tank and his five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and outgunned, they face overwhelming odds as they strike at the heart of Nazi Germany.

What's this? New artwork for Anchor Bay's Texas Killing Fields (review here) even though the flick came out in October? Yeah, I know. It's a slow news day, though, so what the hell.
Inspired by true events, this tense and haunting thriller follows Detective Souder (Sam Worthington), a homicide detective in a small Texan town, and his partner, transplanted New York City cop Detective Heigh (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), as they track a sadistic serial killer dumping his victims’ mutilated bodies in a nearby marsh locals call “The Killing Fields.”
Though the swampland crime scenes are outside their jurisdiction, Detective Heigh is unable to turn his back on solving the gruesome murders. Despite his partner’s warnings, he sets out to investigate the crimes. Before long, the killer changes the game and begins hunting the detectives, teasing them with possible clues at the crime scenes while always remaining one step ahead.

Brooks Barnes at the New York Times posted a puff piece yesterday, pretending to explore John Lasseter's response to the critical reception to Cars 2. Lasseter gives the pat "I don't read reviews" response while Barnes seems to believe most of the criticism of Cars 2 had something to do with Pixar's recent trend of sequel-izing their films and critics simply sharpening their knives, ready to pounce. In the closing of the piece Lasseter responds to being asked whether the negative reviews hurt him by saying, "I make movies for that little boy who loves the characters...
