Nope, this isn’t the new Bong Joon-ho movie, but a 3-D oldie from 1982. Although it’s by no means a great picture, fans equipped for Blu-ray 3-D will want to take a look — the depth effects fashioned with the over’n’under Sterevision system are some of the best yet. Stan Winston provides director Charles Band with the ‘Alien’ rip-off title critters, and added interest is provided via an early appearance by Demi Moore, who sleepwalks through her part but certainly looks good. A full complement of extras tell the making-of story; the feature is also encoded in 2-D, for really imaginative viewers.

What does the American dream mean to you? Hardworking folk just want the job and the house and the family as promised in the ‘old’ Contract With America that began to slip out of reach in the 1970s. To examine the social absurdities at the tacky end of the consumer divide, Bo Goldman and Jonathan Demme’s marvelous film follows Melvin Dummar, a luckless a guy who became an involuntary media sensation. You just want to hug plucky Paul Le Mat and adorable Mary Steenburgen, even though there’s not a thing to be done for them: going to ‘Easy Street’ isn’t so easy, not even after being named in a billionaire’s Last Will and Testament.

I’ve always been fascinated by the duality of Pre-Code cinema, which is talked up in classic film circles as a sin-fueled dungeon of excess, but in most cases simply uses outlandish scenarios to moralistic ends. Baby Face might be about a woman sleeping her way to the top of society, but Barbara Stanwyck still has to realize love is more important than all the riches she’s accrued. Scarface might glorify violence, but Paul Muni will still get his in the end. Indulgence and retreat; enjoy the highs, but shape up or be doomed. Similarly, in the 1970s, after the Motion Picture Production Code was shattered and a wave of sex-fueled odysseys came rushing to the screens, they tended to strike out familiar territory, using their exploitative qualities to reinforce the status quo. So it is with The Swinging Cheerleaders. Jack Hill’s 1974 cheapo gets high on its topless women and under-the-table groping,...

Mandingo, a 1975 movie based on the best-selling period potboiler by Kyle Onstott about sexual shenanigans between masters and slaves on the Falconhurst slave-breeding plantation, was savaged by critics who saw it as nothing but degrading, big-budget exploitation. Roger Ebert called it “racist trash”, a “piece of manure”, and “excruciating to sit through”. Mandingo certainly had it all; brutal violence, interracial sex, rape, infanticide, lynchings, and abundant nudity including full-frontal shots of it’s male star, boxer Ken Norton. But of course it was a huge hit and inspired a brief run of “slaverysploitation” films such as Passion Plantation (1975 aka Black Emmanuelle, White Emmanuelle ) and the cleverly titled Mandiga (1976). Mandingo was overwrought melodrama to be sure, but it’s a model of subtlety compared to its official sequel, the more lascivious Drum, a mean-spirited trash epic from 1976 that would never fly in today’s politically correct climate. Despite its spaghetti western trappings,...

Screen Syndicate, a side project of Southern Illinois-based Americana band Stace England and the Salt Kings, explores the fascinating history of Roger Corman’s New World Pictures and the exploitation films made by the company in the 1970s. The life of actress Roberta Collins — a Hollywood story of sadly unfulfilled promise — is the vehicle used to navigate the period. Collins lit up the screen in films like The Big Doll House, Women In Cages and Death Race 2000. But Collins was unable to break out of the B-movie grind, playing minor roles in increasingly poor productions before finally exiting the business. She died in obscurity in 2008. Screen Syndicate combines original songs, film clips, trailers, and other material into a unique live-music experience that pays tribute to Collins. The band has performed at numerous film festivals in the U.S. and Europe — appearing twice at Sliff — with shows about pioneering African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux and Cairo,...

If any movie deserved to be seen as one of the best worst movies of all time it would probably be The Incredible Melting Man, and no that is not an insult. The acting leaves much to be desired, most of the film is about a guy in make-up walking around the countryside and the story never really finds a right direction, but you know what? I like it, and more importantly this is a movie that shows that sometimes the makeup department (and more importantly, Rick Baker) can cement the movie into the memories of those who have seen it as something a little special.

The latest release from 88 Films’ Grindhouse Collection label, Laserblast is a very early Charles Band production that, for fans of 80s Dtv productions, is probably one of the most notoriously “bad” movies to come from the Full Moon head honcho. Notorious in so much that the cover art for the VHS release (also present on this DVD) should be in the bad movie hall of fame… And so should some of the acting!
For those interested in a plot, Laserblast tells the story of Billy Duncan, a put-upon teenage loner who, after being bullied by two local teens and given a speeding ticket by two police deputies, wanders into the desert and discovers a laser...

To rate The Incredible Melting Man best ever movie about a guy who melts is like saying Snakes On A Plane was the best movie about snakes on a plane. Like the Sam Jackson hit, this B-movie from 1977 fondly recalls the 1950s movies from the likes of Roger Corman where a high-concept title is though up first, then a movie is filmed around it (though this one was updated with squishy makeup effects, gore, and boobs). The Incredible Melting Man is a stupid premise executed with tacky enthusiasm, an irresistible guilty pleasure impossible not to like.
Astronaut Steve West is the only survivor of a disastrous space-mission and carrier of a horrible disease that makes him radioactive and ….. his body is liquefying on him! William Sachs’ The Incredible Melting Man screenplay is a schlock riff on the 1955 Hammer film The Quatermass Xperiment (aka The Creeping Unknown) that doesn’t waste...

The Cheerleaders

High schooler Jeannie dreams of joining the school cheerleading squad in the hopes that popularity and a loss of virginity will follow. What she doesn’t know is that the cheerleaders of Amorosa High have to plan to help out the schools football team by literally taking one for their team and seducing their rivals into exhaustion and “riding” their team to victory.
Revenge Of The Cheerleaders
Stars: Jerii Woods, Cheryl “Rainbeaux” Smith, Helen Lang, Patrice Rohmer, David Hasslehoff | Written by Ted Greenwald, Nathaniel Dorsky, Ace Baandige | Directed by Richard Lerner
The cheerleaders of Aloha High School in California are some of the popular kids in their school thanks to their amorous behaviour. They’re also the cause of the school’s lecherous reputation for underage sex and drug abuse.

While he may be best known for his low-budget, science fiction pictures, nothing truly says Roger Corman or his New World Pictures brand quite like the prison, or in the case of both Jackson County Jail and Caged Heat, women-in-prison, film.
Paired together in a brand new addition to Shout! Factory’s long running DVD line known as Roger Corman’s Cult Classics, the two cult features have finally seen the light of day in a relatively respectable single DVD set, that while the films themselves may not be perfect, they are unlike anything you’ll ever get a chance to check out.
The real star of the set here is the cult classic, Caged Heat. Directed by Jonathan Demme (Something Wild), the film follows Jacqueline Wilson, who is sent to a women’s prison following a conviction on drug charges. Joining a crew of fellow inmates, the team fights against the warden,...

Encino - One of the joys of life is not in the getting, but the ability to give. For the longest time I thought that sentiment was bullshit. It sounded more like the excuse of plague carrier. How can giving a trophy be better than receiving it? I found myself overblissed while handing hardware to a certain star.
In case you tuned in late to the Icon Celebration special on the Dumont network, that was me on the podium announcing that 2011’s Spirit of Bob Crane Award winner was Charlie Sheen. Tears of joy were shed on the trophy that’s a bronzed Sony Portable camera from ‘77. Who knew Charlie was capable of emotion - especially anyone who bought the DVD of Navy Seals.
Charlie continues the legacy of the late great of Bob Crane. Both starred in completely absurd sitcoms. Crane played Col. Hogan on Hogan’s Heroes. We...

There's a prison picture for every mood and inclination, from trashy romps to hard-hitting exposés. Are you craving a little sleazy Wip (that's "women in prison," newbies) action? Feel the need to get your blood boiling with a fact-based story of justice denied? How about a lavish musical set behind bars? There's something on this list for everyone. 10. Caged Heat The quintessential "chicks in the slammer" movie, whose poster really did say it all, promising, "Women's Prison U.S.A. - Rape, Riot & Revenge!" Seventies exploitation starlets Erica Gavin, Roberta Collins, Cheryl Smith, and Desiree Cousteau play mad, bad, and underclad inmates (the only way to better this lineup would be to add Pam Grier), and cult icon Barbara Steele is the wicked warden who eventually gets what's coming to her.9. Escape 2000 This quintessential slice of shameless Oz-ploitation unfolds in a dystopian future where "social deviants" are shipped off...

Michael Pataki was a leading character actor from the 1960s, who was best known for his roles in cult horror films. Pataki starred as Caleb Croft, a vicious vampire rapist whose offspring (William Smith) seeks his destruction in 1974’s Grave of the Vampire, and was Count Dracula and his modern-day descendant Michael Drake in Albert Band’s cult classic Dracula’s Dog (aka Zoltan, Hound of Dracula).
Pataki was born in Youngstown, Ohio, on January 16, 1938. He studied drama and political science at the University of Southern California. He made his film debut in the late 1950s, and appeared frequently on television, often in villainous roles. He was featured in episodes of The Twilight Zone, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, My Favorite Martian, Batman as bat-villain King Tut’s henchman Amenophis Tewfik, Mission: Impossible, and Mr. Terrific.
