B. Smith goes to battle every day—but she's a fighter and is facing her challenges head-on. The 65-year-old former model, restaurateur, designer and author was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease four years ago, and she credits her husband of 23 years and the rest of her close-knit support system for helping her be able to cope. "I deal with it in a practical way," she told Al Roker in an interview that aired Friday on Today. "I know that I've got a problem –doesn't make me happy. Sometimes it makes me teary. But because I have great support, I'm doing fine, I'm doing really good." Sitting by her side was husband Dan Gasby, who admitted that when his...

Thankfully, this mystery did not have a tragic ending. Former model B. Smith was found in a Manhattan café today after last being spotted boarding a jitney that was headed toward the Hamptons, according to the New York Daily News. The 65-year-old, who was one of the first African-American models to be on the cover of Mademoiselle and later became a successful New York restaurateur, revealed this past summer that she was battling Alzheimer's disease. Per the report, Smith's daughter checked with the jitney driver after her mom didn't arrive in Sag Harbor as scheduled Tuesday and was told that Smith had gotten off the bus in Southampton. Smith's husband, producer Dan Gasby, then reported her...

B. Smith is opening up. The model and restaurateur, 64, sat down with CBS News for a revealing new interview this week, speaking to the network's medical correspondent, Dr. Jon Lapook. In the talk, Smith confessed that she has been battling Alzheimer's disease for years. "It meant something bad -- really bad to me," she told Lapook about her diagnosis. The businesswoman, who was one of the first African-American models to cover Mademoiselle magazine, began to tear up as she said, "You do try to hide it from [...]...

Despite the fact that it’s located less than an hour from my house in Berkeley, I have never actually attended the Mill Valley Film Festival in a serious fashion. But this year the Festival seemed unusually festive. Perhaps this was occasioned by its 35th anniversary. Perhaps because, as we’ve noted before, film festivals are increasingly becoming the default method of distribution in an era when art houses are diminishing (San Francisco’s three-screen Lumiere, built in 1967 and operated by Landmark since 1991, just closed in September). A film that does well at Mill Valley could be brought back for a regular run at the three-screen Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael or Cinemark’s two-screen Sequoia Theater in Mill Valley, the festival’s major locations. Or it's another stop on the award season train, trying to reach Bay Area Oscar voters. Mill Valley would be more appealing to someone who.
