During Tuesday’s episode of This Is Us, viewers were thrilled to learn that the writers made reference to a baseball player, John Smiley. In the episode, Kevin wanted to go meet Smiley for an autograph signing. Smiley, who was playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates, was rumored to be traded to the Minnesota Twins, so Kevin wanted to go. John Smiley was born in 1965 and attended Graterford High School in Pennsylvania before entering professional baseball. He was a pitcher and throughout his 11-year-old career, he played for Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Cincinnati, and Cleveland. Even though he started as a relief pitcher, […]

We hate to say it, but we now see the twisted wisdom in what This Is Us‘ Nicky keeps saying: Maybe Jack never should have come to get him in Vietnam.
Heartless? Probably. But go down this rabbit hole with me. If Jack hadn’t brought Nicky to camp, that boy from the village might not have died. And if Nicky had managed to survive the war without overdosing or getting himself killed, there could have been more of a chance for the brothers’ reconciliation, given that...

As Oscar voters ponder their ballots, anything can happen. Yes, the four acting races look like locks: With precursor SAG, Golden Globe, Critics Choice and BAFTA awards going to the same four actors, two from “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell), one from “I, Tonya” (Allison Janney) and one from “Darkest Hour” (Gary Oldman), things could get boring indeed.
Still, while Rockwell and Oldman are locks — they both tower over the two actor categories — the actress races may be closer than we think. Am I going to tell you to change your votes and risk losing your Oscar pool? No. All four winners are still the safe bet. But sometimes Academy voters are not the same as the other groups: they take the high road, go classy, reward the career actor’s actor with a statue — or decide a favorite film has to win something. Victory...

After the previous episode saw villain Tommy Volker (Henry Ian Cusick) taken down, it only seemed right that The Mentalist’s true antagonist came to the front in ‘The Red Barn’. But was it up to Season 5’s high standard?
I’d already seen the previews for this episode, so my immediate thoughts upon seeing Jane (Simon Baker) acting shiftily as he hides something in his Attic Of Demons was that he may be making a gift for Lisbon’s (Robin Tunney) 10th anniversary of her time at the Cbi…that didn’t come to pass, but Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) did surprise her with a surprise party, complete with fake-murder victim stripper and Cbi Ron (John Troy Donovan) cameo. Oh, Rigsby. Of course, Lisbon being Lisbon, she stumbled through the party awkwardly and vowed never to forgive her colleague. But she was only kidding…she was kidding right?...

Has anyone else thought that the Cbi may be one of the most corrupt branches of law enforcement we've ever seen on TV?
Red John has his moles within the agency. Volkner has his informants. Sometimes, it's felt like half of the staff has been working for the bad guys. Members of the Cbi, including two directors, have been shot by their own people or other members of law enforcement.
I knew law enforcement was dangerous, but the Cbi has taken it to a whole new level. With "The Red Barn," it was revealed that Ray Haffner is a member of Visualize. While that's not illegal, it's certainly walking the edge of unethical.
Perhaps Lisbon should consider moving on, if not for her own safety then to ensure that Rigsby never again throws her a surprise party.
If I'd ever doubted that Rigsby was an idiot, which I never have,...

Wow. I said last week to expect little fun and a ton of intensity in these last two episodes – and I wasn’t wrong. Now I usually break down the case and then discuss the themes or ongoing plots seperately, but this weeks case was so in tune with Jane’s breakdown that I’m just going to go ahead and dive right in.
Red John leaves Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) a note that reads ‘Happy Anniversary’ – creepy. Red John manipulates a young girl into giving Jane a message – extra creepy. “Do you give up yet?” she says, Red John smiley drawn on her hand. This being a young girl not unlike his late daughter (which I’m sure was Rj’s intention) Jane takes it upon himself to hypnotise her, making her forget about the ordeal with Red John. Cbi Boss Luther Wainwright (Michael Rady...

I was very curious to watch this episode the moment I read the description, for various reasons. This episode promised to divulge the fate of Kristina Frye, it also marked the return of the charismatic cult-leader Bret Stiles who was definitely on the top of my imaginary 'characters I want to see back on The Mentalist' list. Furthermore, this episode was to introduce Eric Winter's new recurring character on the show. I almost thought that there was too much going on and the episode just might lose focus trying to do everything. But I was wrong, it turned out to be one of the best episodes of the show.
The episode begins with a body found near the Sacramento River with a tattoo being the only identifiable mark on her. Rigsby arrives late and blames the traffic on the 50; Van Pelt finds out that he was with a girl at that time.
