"I still feel like an outsider," Sharman tells Ians, adding: "I understand that there is a certain monogamy of certain generations of families that have been in business, and tomorrow my children would enjoy the fruit of my presence in the Hindi cinema. If only Haseena Parkar didn’t suffer from the curse of a clunky, inept, shoddy central performance, it would have been a far more watchable potboiler on gangsterism. And I use the word ‘potboiler’ with all due respect. It’s not easy to make a massy masala movie out of the mayhem and murkiness of the mafia kingdom.
Rahul Dholakia’s Raees earlier this year wedded crime and kitsch. Apoorva Lakhia does it with a fair share of elan and chutzpah. Haseena Parkar is about that Dubai-based gangster who allegedly ran his nefarious business activities in Mumbai through his sister in the 1990s.
The brother and the sister had themselves a blast.
Fortuitously, Lakhia doesn’t miss Da-wood for the trees.

Proposition For A Revolution, directed by Khushboo Ranka and Vinay Shukla, has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Sundance Documentary Film Programme.
Currently in the final stages of post-production, the film is about the Aam Admi Party, which grew out of the anti-corruption protest movement in India. It also won a Prasad award in the Work-in-Progress Lab at Film Bazaar 2014 and has been supported by a crowdfunding campaign.
“We are treating it as a fiction film in terms of the quality of post-production, sound and colour grading,” said producer Ruchi Bhimani.
Bhimani’s One Eyed Turtle is producing the film with Shukla’s Friendly People and Anand Gandhi’s Memsys Labs.

Well folks, after a rather long and brutal winter (at least for me here in Buffalo), we are finally heading into the wonderful warmth of summer, but with that blast of sunshine and steamy humidity comes the mid-year drought of major film fests. After the Sheffield Doc/Fest concludes on June 10th and AFI Docs wraps on June 21st, we likely won’t see any major influx in our charts until Locarno, Venice, Telluride and Tiff announce their line-ups in rapid succession. In the meantime, we can look forward to the intriguing onslaught of films making their debut in Sheffield, including Brian Hill’s intriguing examination of Sweden’s most notorious serial killer, The Confessions of Thomas Quick, and Sean McAllister’s film for which he himself was jailed in the process of making, A Syrian Love Story, the only two films world premiering in the festival’s main competition.

It should come as no surprise that Cannes Film Festival will play host to Kent Jones’s doc on the touchstone of filmmaking interview tomes, Hitchcock/Truffaut (see photo above). The film has been floating near the top of this list since it was announced last year as in development, while Jones himself has a history with the festival, having co-written both Arnaud Desplechin’s Jimmy P. and Martin Scorsese’s My Voyage To Italy, both of which premiered in Cannes. The film is scheduled to screen as part of the Cannes Classics sidebar alongside the likes of Stig Björkman’s Ingrid Bergman, in Her Own Words, which will play as part of the festival’s tribute to the late starlet, and Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna’s Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans (see trailer below). Nfdc Film Bazaar is introducing a new segment for films in need of gap financing this year. Eighteen projects will be pitched to potential investors to find finishing funds at the first Investor Pitch in Goa this year.
“We learnt that independent films invariably run out of budget at post-production stage. So we thought of organizing a pitching session of such films from Nfdc Recommends section and presenting them to investors, producers and distributors. Here prospective investors can get to watch full films,” says Deepti DCunha, the curator of Investor Pitch.
In order to try out the idea, Nfdc invited selected filmmakers from the Viewing Room section last year for a pitching forum. Filmmakers were asked to showcase the trailers and talk about their films for about five minutes.

The 19th Busan International Film Festival (Biff) has announced 29 projects selected to benefit from Asian Cinema Fund (Acf) 2014, including projects by award-winning directors such as O Muel (Jiseul) and Hannah Espia (Transit).
Acf this year picked 11 projects from Korea and 18 from around the rest of the continent.
Organisers stated Acf got a total of 565 submissions, approximately 30% up from last year. The submissions came from 52 countries including 161 projects from India and 50 from China.
“We think this big increase in submissions is due to the fact that we’ve publicized the Acf a lot, but also possibly because the production environment in Asia has gotten more difficult,” said Acf director Hong Hyosook.
The Acf 2014 Script Development Fund goes to eight projects - three from Korea and five from the rest of Asia. Each will receive a cash grant of KW10m (currently approximately $9,880).

“Proposition for a Revolution” is a feature documentary chronicling the journey of India’s Aam Aadmi Party (Aap), from its birth to fighting its debut elections in New Delhi.
Over the last few years, the world saw a wave of spontaneous peoples’ movements, from Arab Springs to the Occupy Movement to India’s very own anti-corruption Janlokpal movement, where people came out on the streets in large numbers, asking for stronger anti-corruption laws. What is unique in the Indian story is that some of the protesters decided to form a political party and fight statewide elections in New Delhi. Our film chronicles the journey of the Aam Aadmi Party or the Common Man’s Party from its formation in November 2012 to the Delhi state elections in December 2013. Our documentary film is currently in post-production stage with over 400 hours of footage. We are editing right now. We seek your support to...

Ghost Ship: Gandhi’s Debut an Enjoyably Philosophical Triptych
Finally seeing a release after its 2012 premiere, Anand Gandhi’s directorial debut, Ship of Theseus is an engaging philosophical exploration of, among many things, the meaning of life and discernable identity. Hardly as weighty or sententious as that sounds on paper, the film belongs to a growing cluster of recent independent offerings from India that exist far away from the realm of Bollywood, a fact that may conflate a struggle to find an audience. While a running time of nearly two and half hours may seem equally daunting, Gandhi, who also wrote the script, has created an intelligent, three pronged portrait of life in modern day Mumbai that neither taps into doldrums or dramatics. While it sometimes feels a bit heavy-handed, certain lengthy passages of dialogue and a uniting finale are two areas that may grate, it’s a grandly...

Ship of Theseus is the first feature film from director Anand Gandhi, and, as its title suggests, it explores the philosophical concept of the paradox of Theseus. As described by the Greek philosopher Plutarch, the paradox is this: if an object has any or all of its parts replaced, does it remain the same object?
The film, then, traces the stories of three individuals, all of whom are affected by this conundrum. Each of them must deal with the change that is wrought in their lives and in themselves either after an organ transplant (in the case of the photographer Aliya and the stockbroker Nivan), or before it (the monk Maitreya).
Aliya (Aida Elkashef) is blind as a result of a corneal infection. Despite this, she works as a photographer, relying on her intuition to fuel her creative output. In addition, she has developed a way of working with her...

An Open Forum was held on ‘The state of screen writing today’ on Day 7 of the 13th Mumbai Film Festival. The panel comprised Vinay Shukla, Saurabh Shukla, Abbas Tyrewala, Sagar Ballary, Dev Benegal and Atul Tiwari. The discussion was moderated by Atul Tiwari, who wrote dialogues for films like Droh Kaal and Mission Kashmir.
Vinay Shukla, writer-director who made Godmother (National Award for Best Feature Film 1999) blamed producers for the sorry state of screenwriting in India today. “Though every producer will tell you that script is the backbone of the film, they want something that is tried and tested. They do not encourage fresh talent. So writers are afraid to write something new.” He also pointed out that Hindi films had become formulaic 1960s onwards.

Screenwriting is considered to be the backbone of a film. It is also believed that it is an art form that is in decline in India. Or is it? An open forum held at the ongoing Mumbai Film Festival to discuss the same saw some interesting fireworks..Sorry, but I am not optimistic at all. I think we are f*****. There.s no dearth of writers in India, but there.s a great lack of writing that has the life and smell of this nation,. said celebrated screenwriter Abbas Tyrewala. He dug into the root of this decline. .Before the 60s, we were telling stories. Major stars worked with the films instead of merely acting in it. Problem started during the Bachchan era. Amitabh Bachchan.s persona started towering over everything. Suddenly it was okay to not have a story as long as you had him since people were in awe of him.

Vinay Shukla's tikhi, spicy and delectable, Mirch, is now available on DVD and Vcd, released by Reliance Home Video.
Mirch has four short stories that have the central theme of women's sexuality and more important, emancipation. Loosely based on stories from the Panchatantra, Mirch has mild doses of eroticism, both visual and verbal. What catches one’s fancy isn't the romps of cheating wives or the obvious sexual innuendos in the dialogues, but how cleverly and deftly the women slip out of the most challenging situations!
