This article contains massive spoilers for "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga."
With the release of "Furiosa," the fifth film in the "Mad Max" saga, it is abundantly clear that these movies never intended to be a single, serialized narrative. Instead, each film is a piece of mercurial mythology — stories that aren't concerned with strict continuity. They're legends, in the way that stories about Moses or King Arthur are legends; they aren't chronicles of what exactly did happen, but what may have happened.
This approach to the "Mad Max" films began with the 1979 original (which opens with the vague "A Few Years From Now..." title card) and continued in earnest with 1981's "Mad Max 2," which is narrated by an older version of one of the principal characters (whom we only hear and never see). Only 2015's "Fury Road" is narrated by Max himself, and even then, he's not of sound mind.

Shirley Barrett's Love Serenade (1996) is showing May 14 - June 13, 2018 in many countries around the world.Australian writer-director Shirley Barrett’s latest venture, a screenplay-turned-novel titled Rush Oh!, is about the fascinating and true story of an inter-species bond that grew in the early 1900s between a whaling community in the coastal town of Eden and a pod of killer whales. Every year, the whales returned to help the whalers trap their prey and share in the common loot. In an interview, Barrett describes how she came upon the story one particular rainy day during a beach trip to Eden. She had sought shelter at the local whale museum and had been struck by the sight of a very impressive killer whale skeleton on display just as she had walked in. The museum, she had realized, had been built to showcase what remained of this formidable creature, a killer whale named ‘Old Tom,...

“Nothing haunts like the past.” It’s a catchy tag line that attempts to sum up writer and director Michael Petroni’s new film Backtrack, but there more to this mystery/thriller than can be summed up in a single breath. What begins as a moody drama about a troubled psychotherapist quickly reveals itself as a deeper tale of supernatural intervention into the darker underbelly of human nature.
Peter Bower, played with wrenching emotional finesse by Adrien Brody, is struggling with the loss of his daughter while barely holding together his practice and his marriage. Bower blames himself for his daughter’s death, while not entirely clear on what happened exactly. When not in sessions with his own patients, Bower seeks counsel from fellow psychotherapist Duncan Stewart, played by Sam Neill, which only leads Bower further down the twisted rabbit hole that will be come a truly unnerving revelation.

Uninhibitedly delving into your past to help you contend with your current intricate emotions and conflicts can be a frightening, but equally liberating, experience. Not only is the troubled protagonist in the new independent mystery thriller, ‘Backtrack,’ forced to confront how the mistakes of his mistakes are haunting his present and dictating his future, but the film’s writer-director-producer, Michael Petroni, also enthrallingly returned to his native Australia to make the genre film. The filmmaker powerfully embraced filming in his native country, as he set out to explore how the painful decisions people make earlier in their lives harrowingly influence their later actions and mindsets in his latest gripping drama. ‘Backtrack’ [ Read More ]

Paul China’s feature debut Crawl aims to do for the Australian Outback what the Coen Brothers have done for America’s Deep South, pulling back the unassuming veneer to reveal an underbelly of savage violence, shady deals and sleaze. Though minimalist to a fault, there’s plenty of tension to keep this grisly Aussie thriller bounding along.
It all begins, as it inevitably does, with a murder. A man known only as “the Croatian” (George Shevtsov) arrives in the sleepy town to perform a hit on a local mechanic whose business deal went South (no pun intended). Meanwhile, Marilyn (Georgina Haig), a beautiful young woman, finishes her shift at work and heads home, fully expecting her long-time boyfriend, Travis, to propose to her when he arrives back at their shared abode. She waits, and she waits, but of course, a fatal car accident ensures that...

The Coen Brothers, in particular “Blood Simple” and “No Country for Old Men”, are evoked in “Crawl”, an Australian shot suspense thriller revolving around a hit gone wrong in a small outback town. Furthering Coen comparisons, the film was also a fraternal affair, written and directed by Brit Paul China and produced by his brother Ben China, marking their debut. Originally released in 2011 and having played at a variety of genre festivals, including Screamfest in the Us, where it picked up several awards, the film lands shortly on region 2 DVD and Blu Ray via Arrow Films. The film kicks off with a laconic, nameless Croatian hitman (George Shevtsov) casually knocking off a garage owner at the behest of seedy nightclub owner called Slim Walding (Paul Holmes) over a business falling out. Although the killing and payoff seem to go exactly as planned, on his way out of town the hitman...

Featuring: George Shevtsov and Georgina Haig
Filmmakers Paul and Benjamin China are a filmmaking team of brothers who have stuck to their guns to create a thriller, a movie that has subsequently played all over the world in the festival circuit. Crawl is a well told story that is also visually interesting.
While this particular film was picked up for distribution representation during ScreamFest 2011 in Los Angeles, I wasn’t able to see it until it made its way to Cannes 2012. I worried that I’d be the only one who didn’t get it. Luckily for me, I became part of the Crawl army.
It is important when going into your viewing of Crawl to understand that it isn’t a gory torture porn. Crawl is more of a throwback to horror of old — which, personally, is my favorite type of horror subgenre.

Take two talented, young, British-born Gold Coast based filmmakers. Add a double-crossing darkly humorous plot worthy of the Coen Brothers. Sprinkle it with a touch of David Lynch and a generous heap of Hitchcock and you have the spine-tingling suspense thriller Crawl - the mightily impressive feature debut of twin brother movie-makers Paul and Ben China. Crawl headlines Love Serenade actor George Shevtsov as a mysterious Croatian hired to commit murder by a seedy bar owner (Paul Bryant). Georgina Haig (Wasted on the Young) plays the unfortunate young waitress who becomes embroiled in the double-crossing plot when she is taken hostage at her isolated forest residence.

A very intriguing trailer crept its way into the Dread Central offices today, and it's something you really need to check out. It's for an Australian film entitled Crawl, which will be making its world premiere at Screamfest 2011 in Los Angeles in October. Do yourself a favor - read on and check out this twisted, mysterious trailer.
The tiny bit of the Crawl film we see in the trailer has a ton of blood, violence and overall bad intentions. It's got a Tarantino-esque feel to it, even containing the beautiful Georgina Haig, who looks like a young Uma Thurman. Also featured in the film are George Shevtsov and Paul Holmes. Paul China wrote and directed the feature with his twin brother Benjamin China, and Brian Breheny handling the producing duties.

Australia, that land of cinematic wacky oddballs, gives us yet another absurdist comedy in Shirley Barrett's debut feature, winner of the Camera d'Or at Cannes and recently showcased at the 14th Miami Film Festival. This bizarre comedy about a romantic triangle between two love-starved sisters and the object of their affections, who may or may not be a fish, has a genuine charm and an anarchic humor that is all the more effective for the deadpan nature of its presentation. "Love Serenade" is at times very, very funny, although its slow rhythms may prevent it from breaking out of the art houses. Miramax is releasing domestically.
The film is set in the town of Sunray, a desolate burg where the local Chinese restaurant is forever empty. The sole inhabitants of the town seem to be Vicky-Ann (Rebecca Frith), who works at the beauty parlor, and her emotionally repressed younger sister, Dimity (Miranda Otto). Dimity waits tables at the aforementioned restaurant, whose cook has a propensity for nudism.
The sisters are delighted when they discover that a celebrity has moved to town: Ken Sherry (George Shevtsov), a DJ who made a name for himself in Brisbane and who is now spinning '70s-era discs at the dilapidated local radio station. The desperate Vicky-Ann is wildly excited at the prospect of snaring the laid-back Sherry and shows up at his door bearing the gift of a very large fish. He's resistant to all her efforts, but when Dimity tries a more direct approach and simply takes her clothes off, he's more than willing to relieve her of her virginity. The resulting complications (Sherry eventually takes up with Vicky-Ann as well) eventually find the randy DJ receiving an unexpectedly dramatic comeuppance.
Director-screenwriter Barrett has a distinctly original comic sensibility and displays a real expertise in her dialogue and characterizations and in the film's wide-screen visual compositions, which often provide their own witty, deadpan comic touches. This is the kind of film when you never exactly know what is going to happen next or what unexpected dimension the characters will reveal -- and the revelations are enormously fun.
On the other hand, there is too much of an effort toward the fanciful, and the entire subplot about Sherry possibly being of another species seems overdone and pointless.
The director has garnered expert comic performances from the three leads. Shevtsov, barely changing his facial expressions and delivering all his dialogue in the same slightly bored monotone, is a delight as the cynical DJ and manages to make his character utterly endearing in his sleaziness. Frith, working at an opposite, hysterical pitch, is a perfect counterpoint. But it is the young Otto who steals the film. Her Dimity is a marvelous comic creation, containing an ever-surprising combination of naivete and guile, and her wordless comic reactions generate howls from the audience.
Another bountiful source of humor in the film is the perfectly selected soundtrack of '70s-era oldies, including numerous heavy-breathing seductive classics by Barry White.
