When CBS announced its Matlock reboot in February of 2023, the casting news generated almost as much excitement as the revelation that one of TV's most beloved lawyers would be returning to the small screen.
One year later, Kathy Bates is still on board as the titular attorney, and Jason Ritter will portray her colleague Julian -- but a well-known newcomer will be taking over the role of Ritter's dad.
The network announced today that Beau Bridges will be joining the show as a powerful lawyer with the apt name of Senior.
According to a press release, Senior is "the managing partner of New York’s most prestigious law firm with an indomitable presence that immediately alters the temperature of any room.
"The man’s influence reaches far and wide, and although he loves his son, Julian (Jason Ritter), he might respect his daughter-in-law, Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), more," the announcement continues.

In between drags of cigarette smoke, Patty and Selma Bouvier are likely freaking out over the idea of a new Matlock series coming to CBS. The Matlock reboot gets a new star today with Beau Bridges joining the cast. Bridges replaces Jayme Sheridan, who starred in the pilot, to act opposite Kathy Bates in the updated version. CBS’ Matlock debuts in 2024-25 after the strike delayed production.
CBS’ Matlock hails from Jennie Snyder Urman and stars Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a sharp-minded septuagenarian with a stellar track record for solving cases. After being away from the game for years, Matlock rejoins the workforce at a distinguished law firm, where she uses her years of experience and unique tactics to achieve justice. At her new place of employment, Matty teams up with Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), a senior attorney and key rainmaker who thirsts for fair play. Olympia’s ex-husband,...

Back in the day, if someone had tried to convince me to read a pseudo-religious epic with a four-digit page-count and a Deus Ex Machina ending without mentioning that it was penned by Stephen King, I’m pretty sure that I would have done my best to avoid that person (and the book) like the superflu. Luckily for me, I was already an Sk fanatic with a fascination for all things apocalyptic when I first laid hands on an uncut edition of The Stand, and it ended up becoming my absolute favorite novel by the King of horror.
Inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, King’s viral opus was originally meant to bring the mythic scale of fantasy stories to (then) modern-day America, with Christianity replacing Middle Earth’s magical elements and country folk standing in for hobbits and elves. Mick Garris has long been a champion of horror, developing platforms for icons in the genre through series like Masters of Horror and the Post Mortem podcast. As a talented director in his own right, Garris had the unenviable task of holding down the fort in what many deem to be horror’s “rebuilding years” of the late ’ 80s and early ’90s. But he did so with style, producing work that tiptoed deftly between dark and fun in films like the bizarre, campy, incestuous feline flick Sleepwalkers. Apart from being a great movie, Sleepwalkers also kicked off a creative relationship between Garris and Stephen King, as Garris would go on to adapt not one, but two of King’s books into miniseries in an era when “event television” was still a thing. The first of which was a bold undertaking in bringing one of King’s biggest, most epic tales...

On the short list of post- classic-era comedies I can see over and over again is this beautifully executed Bill Murray crime comedy, which he co-directed. The fact that its basically silly main joke is whining about New York City doesn’t keep it from being hilarious from one end to the other. When it comes time for a getaway to the airport, Manhattan might as well be an impenetrable maze, an island of doom. Geena Davis and Randy Quaid give excellent comedy support, while Jason Robards holds up the police dragnet end of the story. The disc has no special extras but Murray’s movie is as satisfying as ever.

In terms of post-apocalyptic shows about a viral communicable disease causing the end of the world, CBS All Access’ “The Stand” falls somewhere between Amazon’s “Utopia” and AMC’s still-kicking “The Walking Dead” franchise. Classier than the former, which gleefully used violence as a narrative shortcut, but somehow more glacially paced than the latter, “The Stand” arrives at a coincidental time given how we live now. But this adaptation of one of Stephen King’s most dense, sprawling works never quite reaches the epic scope illustrated so clearly in the 1978 novel.
Instead, showriunner Benjamin Cavell have applied a strangely sanitized sheen to the central threat of elemental evil, resulting in a miniseries that feels simultaneously over-detailed and underdeveloped. That conflicted quality makes the danger faced by the community serving as humanity’s last stand curiously subdued, and “The Stand” struggles to distinguish itself outside of its exceptional casting choices.

At 2020’s virtual New York Comic Con, CBS All Access held a panel for its upcoming nine-episode limited series “The Stand,” which is based on the Stephen King novel. It premieres on Thursday, December 17, with new episodes going up every week on the streaming platform. During that panel, they also unveiled the trailer for the star-studded television event. Watch that trailer above, and scroll down to see the panel discussion with actors Whoopi Goldberg, James Marsden, Greg Kinnear, Odessa Young, Jovan Adepo, Amber Heard and Owen Teague, along with executive producers Benjamin Cavell and Taylor Elmore.
“The Stand” is an apocalyptic story starring Goldberg as Mother Abigail, a 108-year-old woman who must save mankind along with a few other survivors of a global plague — which, if nothing else, is a timely theme. Alexander Skarsgard plays Randall Flagg aka the Dark Man, who has supernatural powers and is the embodiment of the survivors’ worst nightmares.

CBS All Access‘ limited series adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Stand” will premiere Dec. 17, the streamer announced Tuesday.
The series will be a weekly one, with each of the subsequent eight episodes streaming one at a time every Thursday following that premiere. As previously announced, King penned the finale and also wrote a new coda that will take the story beyond where is 800-plus page 1978 tome left things.
“During the two years we spent making ‘The Stand,’ we all felt the responsibility of adapting what may be the most beloved work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, but none of us could have imagined that Stephen King’s 40-year-old masterpiece about a global pandemic would come to be so eerily relevant,” said showrunner Benjamin Cavell. “We’re honored to tell this sprawling, epic story, including a new coda that Stephen King has wanted to add for decades.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the “Arrow” series finale.
In the aftermath of Oliver Queen’s (Stephen Amell) death, the CW’s “Arrow” ended with a relatively happy ending.
The post-“Crisis” world revealed that Oliver’s death had indeed been a spark that saved his city, which was now crime-free. Additionally, nearly everyone whom Oliver lost over the years — including his mother Moira (Susanna Thompson), best friend Tommy (Colin Donnell), and foe-turned-friend Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne) — was revived. An exception to the rule was Oliver’s father, Robert (Jamey Sheridan), about whom the Queen family speculated that only things that didn’t change the titular hero could be undone.
Undoing, to a degree, past key emotional moments was a delicate line to toe, the “Arrow” team admits.
“One thing we didn’t want to do was invalidate the entire series. There’s 169 episodes...

Chloë Sevigny plays the terrorised daughter – and prime suspect – in this retelling of the notorious Lizzie Borden story
Here is a horror thriller – a conjectural drama based on a gruesome true story – in which the element of horror is treated circumspectly, almost dispassionately, as if to douse its mythic element in as much cold reality as possible.
It is the story of Lizzie Borden, who according to the famous rhyme “took an axe / And gave her mother forty whacks. / When she saw what she had done / She gave her father forty-one.” She was a real person. In 1892, Borden (played here by Chloë Sevigny) became prime suspect in the horrendous axe murders of her father Andrew (Jamey Sheridan) and hated stepmother Abby (Fiona Shaw) in Fall River, Massachusetts. Andrew, a wealthy, grasping individual presides over a controlling and abusive household after remarrying, cold and tyrannical towards Lizzie herself and hateful in various ways to everyone else,...

The tale of Lizzie Borden has been told in rhyme and on screen before. In 1975, Elizabeth Montgomery led TV movie The Legend of Lizzie Borden. The less said of 2013’s “nude film” Lizzie Borden’s Revenge, the better. Finally, in 2014, Christina Ricci played the titular tool wielder in Lizzie Borden Took an Ax, followed by a series. After these average to abysmal affairs, director Craig William Macneill (The Boy) and screenwriter Bryce Kass have fashioned what’s close to a prestige feature, and the first big screen film version of Borden’s bloody tale.
Instead of lazily charting the pre-trodden path from a grimy, exploitative perspective, Kass crafts multifaceted characters, fortified by disturbing family drama and taut plotting. These, when mined under Macneill’s burrowing eye, and with outstanding performances, make Lizzie (the film) a disquieting, absorbing and unforgettable drama/thriller, topped with the obligatory mum and dad hacking.

Lizzie Borden and the gruesome murders of her parents remain in the public imagination, due in part to that memorable childhood rhyme about 40 whacks. Andrew and Abby Borden were found brutally murdered in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts on August 4, 1892, when no one else was there except Lizzie and a servant girl. Yet Lizzie Borden was acquitted of the murders, partly because the jury just could not believe that such a well-brought up young lady from a respectable family could possibly have committed such a horrible crime.
Over the years, there have been lots of theories about what happened that day. Lizzie is a psychological thriller that tells one possible version, one that delves into the family dynamics within the Borden family and the restrictive lives of women in that patriarchal era,...

The morning of August 4, 1892, Lizzie Borden discovered the bodies of her father and stepmother who had been axed to death in their house. She went on to become the prime suspect in the murders, and even though she was eventually acquitted, history turned her into a folk tale used to instill fear in little children who shudder at the idea of her cursed axe. How could it not? After all, Borden became the embodiment of everything a woman was not supposed to be: wealthy, outspoken and unmarried.
In Lizzie, director Craig William Macneill and screenwriter Bryce Kass don’t attempt to further acquit her, but sticking to the idea that Borden indeed murdered her parents, they create a feminist case for her. Not that murder is justifiable of course, but rather than focusing on Lizzie as a figure out of a horror movie or creepy folk tale, she is portrayed...

A lesbian spin on the legendary Lizzie Borden murder case is nothing new — Ed McBain posited the notion in a 1984 novel — but the stylish and haunting “Lizzie” paints a provocative portrait of a woman driven by passions and left with few options in a society that gave her little agency.
In “Lizzie,” we come to know Borden’s inner turmoil, not only by her periodic “spells” but also in the way that the camera captures a bewitching Chloë Sevigny. She’s often off-center in the frame, or reflected in mirrors, or out of focus in the foreground as she imagines what’s happening far behind her.
Screenwriter Bryce Kass (“Outlaw Prophet: Warren Jeffs”) and director Craig William Macneill (2015’s “The Boy”), like everyone else who has tackled this story, are left to their own conjectures and theories as to the how and the why behind the murder of Borden’s father and stepmother,...

Filmmaker Craig William Macneill hasn’t been one to shy away from creating compelling, layered characters led by their darker impulses, and his latest feature, Lizzie, is another startling reminder of how isolation can drive people to do terrible things. Starring Chloë Sevigny in the titular role, and featuring a talented ensemble that includes Kristen Stewart, Fiona Shaw, Jamey Sheridan, and Denis O’Hare, Lizzie doesn’t dawdle on the shocking events that transpired that fateful day when Mr. and Mrs. Borden were brutally murdered with an axe—instead, it turns its focus inward on Lizzie and how the repressive society she was brought up in caused her to live a life of isolation and bottled-up rage.

This Friday, Saban Films and Roadside Attractions are releasing Lizzie, the latest movie from filmmaker Craig William Macneill, into theaters everywhere in the Us. In this haunting character study of a woman who seemingly crumbles under the oppressive thumb of both society and her family, Chloë Sevigny stars as the infamous Lizzie Borden, who was suspected of murdering her parents (played by Jamey Sheridan and Fiona Shaw) in cold blood with an axe.
Before the death of her mother and father, Lizzie finds a kindred spirit in Bridget (Kristen Stewart), a housemaid recently employed by the Bordens who shares a deep connection with the titular character, giving Lizzie her very first taste of freedom, and propelling the troubled woman to cut her family ties, both figuratively and literally.

I'm sure you're all familiar with the haunting nursery rhyme, "Lizzie Borden took an axe, And gave her mother forty whacks. When she saw what she had done, She gave her father forty-one."
The story of Lizzie Borden has been reimagined with some new twists to the story in an upcoming film called Lizzie, which stars Chloë Sevigny in the role of the suspected murderer who was accused of hacking up her mother and father, and Kristen Stewart in the role of the family maid, Bridget Sullivan.
I had a chance to see the film at Sundance earlier this year and I thought that it was an interesting take on the story, although it did seem like it was very long and drawn out. In Corrin's review for the film, she said:
Lizzie is an artsy period piece full of frustratingly long pauses and attempts at making an old legend modern and erotic.

"Takes a legend and blows it up from the inside." Roadside Attractions has debuted the first official trailer for an indie drama titled Lizzie, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The dramatic thriller tells the story of Lizzie Borden, infamous for murdering her parents with an axe in 1892. Chloë Sevigny stars as Lizzie Borden, and the cast includes Kristen Stewart as her lover, Bridget, as well as Kim Dickens, Fiona Shaw, Denis O'Hare, Jeff Perry, Jamey Sheridan, Jay Huguley, and Tara Ochs. This didn't have the best reviews out of Sundance, but it does look like a fascinating film with some stunning performances. Director Craig William Macneill "explores the days leading up to the savage crimes in a dark tale of repression, exploitation and thwarted dreams." If you're curious about this, give it a watch. Lizzie Borden took and axe and, well, maybe. We don’t actually see the deed in this chilling new trailer for Craig William Macneill’s Sundance Fest hit Lizzie starring Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart, but we do get a Lizzie who can wield a wicked retort.
Asked by an interrogator whether her murdered father had enemies, Sevigny’s Lizzie responds, “This is America, sir. Every man with a pulse has enemies.”
Co-starring Jamey Sheridan as Borden patriarch Andrew Borden, Lizzie, judging by this footage, certainly doesn’t shy from speaking ill of the slaughtered. We see a sinister Andrew Borden abusing family maid Bridget Sullivan (Stewart), smacking around Lizzie and slaughtering what seems to be Lizzie’s pet pigeon.
The trailer also portrays the developing intimate relationship between Lizzie and Bridget. Maybe more than one woman took an axe and handed out those 41 whacks?

After debuting at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Chloe Sevigny’s passion project is finally hacking its way to the big screen.
Set in 1892, “Lizzie” follows the notorious would-be axe murderess Lizzie Borden (Sevigny), who was accused and acquitted of killing her father and stepmother in Fall River, Mass. Kristen Stewart co-stars as Bridget Sullivan, an Irish maid who comes to live with the Borden family and secretly develops an intimate relationship with Lizzie.
The thriller also features Fiona Shaw as Lizzie’s stepmother, Abby Borden; Jamey Sheridan as Lizzie’s father, Andrew Borden; and Kim Dickens as Lizzie’s sister, Emma Borden. Denis O’Hare, Jeff Perry, and Jay Huguley also star.
In the clip, Sevigny is shown as Lizzie as she’s interrogated about her father’s murder. When asked if Andrew Borden might have had any enemies, she responds, “This is America, sir. Every man with a pulse has enemies.

The murders have already been committed by the time Craig William Macneill’s “Lizzie” opens, two bodies lying dead in the cursed Borden family home in Fall River, Massachusetts, a shell-shocked Lizzie Borden (Chloe Sevigny) being questioned by the police, and a terrified young maid (Kristen Stewart) milling at the corners. A revisionist take on a classic American legend that’s already gotten plenty of revisionist takes (the Lifetime channel alone made one film that proved so popular that the cable outfit turned it into an entire limited series), Sevigny’s longtime passion project infuses new insight into the story of Borden and her 40 whacks, but a listless quality keeps it from exploding into the kind of drama necessary for a story rooted in so much rage.

If there is one thing we know about 2017, it is that it is a dark time. What we need is a glimmer of hope, something to show that there is still good out there, and surprisingly there is evidence of that in movies like Sully: Miracle on the Hudson. Though it also shows the clinical and cynical nature of the world we live in.
Sully: Miracle on the Hudson is based on the true story of Captain “Sully” Sullenberger (Tom Hanks), the pilot who managed to land his plane saving all those aboard. Set in the days after the event, it delves both into Sully’s self-doubt about his actions, and the investigation that unfolded into his actions.
