Eight years ago director Mpumi “Supa” Mbele went to watch a live performance of South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo in Joburg Theatre with his son, who had no idea who they were but was amazed by their performance. He turned to his dad and said: “Ah dad, you should tell their story.”
“That’s where the idea started,” the filmmaker tells Variety about the documentary “Music Is My Life,” in which he chronicles the life of the late Joseph Shabalala – from his early years in rural KwaZulu-Natal and his rise to global fame with the iconic group, until his death in 2020. The film, which provides a fresh insight into the man, his ambitions and his band, screens at Joburg Film Festival.

From the beginning of her career, many of Dolly Parton’s musical collaborations have been nothing if not unique, from a 1999 duet with Boy George and Culture Club to the Grammy-winning 2016 remake of “Jolene” with a cappella group Pentatonix. But with regard to the inspiration leading to Parton’s various collaborations, you’d be hard-pressed to find one more unusual that a TV commercial for LifeSavers featuring South African a cappella legends Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

We awoke this morning to the sad news that Ladysmith Black Mambazo founder Joseph Shabalala has died. “Our Founder, our Teacher and most importantly, our Father left us today for eternal peace,” the South African vocal troupe said in a group statement. “We celebrate and honor your kind heart and your extraordinary life. Through your music and the millions who you came in contact with, you shall live forever.”

"It's October 3rd," and any sane person on this earth knows what that holy phrase means. It's Mean Girls Day, bitches. We could spend this time recalling our favorite quotes, but why? You already know all of them and use them shamelessly in your daily life. We could also reminisce about Cady, Regina, Gretchen and Karen, but again, you probably already do that every day too. Instead, we wanted to honor characters who don't always get the attention they deserve. The Trang Pak's, Caroline Krafft's and Nfume's of the world. After all, any true Mg fan respects Amber D'Alessio for making out with that hot dog and totally Spotify'd some Ladysmith Black Mambazo at one point...

Jimmy Fallon and his Tonight Show crew have performed music in some of the most ridiculous ways possible: barbershop quartet versions of profane pop tunes, a Ladysmith Black Mambazo-styled song about ice cream, an assortment of Neil Young impersonations. But the show achieved a new level of musical absurdity during Tuesday's episode, delivering an "all-clucking version" of Alanis Morissette's sensitive 1996 single "Ironic."
In the clip, Fallon is accompanied by Morissette and "All About That Bass" crooner Meghan Trainor to form "the Jagged Little Chicks," a play on Morissette's smash LP Jagged Little Pill.

Giving the deluxe version of superstar DJ and producer David Guetta’s new album a spin, it soon becomes clear why previously released promo singles “Bad” and”‘Shot Me Down” are kept apart from the main body of Listen and repackaged as bonus tracks.
Inspired by Cher’s “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down),” later covered by Nancy Sinatra and then pushed into peoples’ hearts via Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Volume 1 – the Frenchman gives the classic song a new twist. Alongside Skylar Grey, “Shot Me Down” sees the decades-old track enveloped by Guetta’s rampant, pulsating club sounds for a modern, worthwhile remake. Not content with hooking up with Grey again on the darker, primal “Rise,” “Bad” featuring Showtek and Vassy, also races towards the dance floor with its thumping bassline and laser sharp synths.
In short, the handful of cuts stuck onto the end of Listen are...

The legendary Paul Simon took to the stage on the Sunday night as the final headliner for Hard Rock Calling.

This summer marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most seminal recordings of popular music. Paul Simon's Graceland is an infectious, fantastically crafted record that launched for many a deep and abiding love of South African rhythms, Cajun accordion, and the remarkable A Capella richness that comes from the throats of the Ladysmith Black Mambazo troupe. To celebrate this anniversary, Sony Music has released a series of box sets, tied in with the home media release of Joe Berlinger's remarkable Under African Skies documentary. There's both a 2-disc and 4-disc set to choose from, and for collectors things get a bit frustrating. The 4 Disc set (which I unfortunately did not receive for review purposes) includes a 76-page book filled with interviews, photos, liner notes,...

My pick for today's Sydney Film Festival trailer of the day is Under African Skies, which focuses on Paul Simon's seminal album Graceland. About Under African Skies: Paul Simon returns to South Africa to reunite with the musicians, including Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who collaborated on his mega-hit Graceland. The album's 1986 release put Simon in the eye of a storm of controversy for breaking the Un cultural boycott of the South African Apartheid regime. Prize-winning filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Metallica: Some Kind of Monster and the Paradise Lost trilogy) follows Simon to South Africa for the album's 25th-anniversary celebrations, where he confronts his critics - including Artists United Against Apartheid founder Dali Tambo - and defends his appropriation of African music. Embedded below is the trailer. ...

Dr. Richard Leakey is the first to admit that his friendship with Paul Simon is unlikely. "I really don't like music and he really doesn't like old bones," Leakey told the audience at last night's intimate fundraiser for the Turkana Basin Institute (T.B.I.), a non-profit organization dedicated to assembling a full fossil record of humanity's origins in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Still, the venerable paleontologist and conservationist -- who was introduced last night as "the man many believe responsible for saving the elephant population" of Kenya -- and the legendary folk-rock musician hit it off when the latter paid a visit to T.B.I. about four years ago. Singer to play in Hyde Park as part of anniversary celebrations likely to revive row over 1985 visit to South Africa
It was one of the most divisive shows in British pop history. On 7 April 1987, Paul Simon brought his best-selling Graceland project to the Royal Albert Hall in London for the first of six sold-out concerts.
On stage, he was joined by the cream of South African musicians, including Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, but outside, leading British musicians joined people protesting that Simon had broken the Anc's cultural boycott of apartheid-era South Africa.
They included Billy Bragg, Paul Weller and Jerry Dammers, famous for writing one of the great anti-apartheid anthems, Nelson Mandela. They had delivered an angry letter to Simon, asking him to apologise.

The vocal ensemble formed by Joseph Shabalala in 1960 had long been legendary in their home country, but the combined effect of the racist apartheid government of the day which made travel outside of South Africa difficult for black citizens, and the general lack of exposure to African music in the west up until then prevented Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s music from reaching international audiences.

Paul Simon had a very successful solo career following the split of famous musical duo Simon & Garfunkel. Now the 69-year-old singer is planning another tour, where he says he wants to reunite with musical acts he played with 25 years ago when his "Graceland" album was released, reports the BBC.
The 1986 album won the Grammy for Record of the Year and featured the hit single "You Can Call Me Al." As part of the new tour, Simon will release a box set of the album that includes a documentary.
"The documentary took me back to the artistic aspects and the political aspects of making 'Graceland' and the controversy that surrounded it and how it was resolved, plus what remains of it and what we learn from it," says Simon.
Back in 1987, Simon collaborated with several African artists for the album, including trumpeter Hugh Masekela and Ladysmith Black Mambazo in South Africa.

Paul Simon's 1986 album Graceland is the subject of endless debate, but its popularity can't really be argued with: it's gone platinum five times in the United States and the United Kingdom, won Grammies (for both Album of the Year and Record of the Year), and was selected for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry in 2007. The new film is a catch-up of sorts that will see Simon hanging out with Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the [...]...
