Right up until he joined Fleetwood Mac in 2018, Neil Finn felt it was very likely that Crowded House would never make another record. The band’s lineup had shifted several times over the years, founding drummer Paul Hester was dead, and an attempt to record a follow-up to 2010’s Intriguer a few years prior to that was such a fiasco that Finn decided to shelve the entire project.
“I felt like there needed to be a sense of occasion to bring Crowded House back,” the singer-guitarist says on the phone from his native New Zealand.

“This song was formed out of a Crowded House jam, live in the studio but then evolved its character through many twists and turns during quarantine in 2020,” singer Neil Finn said in a statement. ” ‘Playing With Fire’ carries within it the contradiction I often feel on joyous occasions, the presence of hope together with an impending sense of doom.”

Crowded House have dropped their first new music in more than a decade with their new single, “Whatever You Want.” The accompanying video stars Mac DeMarco.
In the endearingly goofy Nina Ljeti-directed clip, DeMarco awakens on his couch half-dressed, contemplating the night before. It appears he is suffering from a relatable imposter syndrome and seems to feel he bombed, and perhaps got bombed, in front of a lot of people. As he studies himself in a mirror disapprovingly, he receives words of encouragement from a statue. Other items — including a garden gnome,...

Happy New Year! It's been a tumultuous year for me and for many of us of a certain age. I lost a brother. The world lost a slew of pop culture -- Carrie Fisher, Alan Richman, Craig Sager, John Glenn -- and music icons -- Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, George Michael, et al. One comfort for me was music and my rediscovery of vinyl. The warm, comforting sound of analog became my daily meditative fix. Quite literarily. Seeking out vinyl "nuggets" became a quest to help me deal with my own pain and depression. Chasing down albums that I owned thirty years, abadonded at the advent of those shiny new things called compact discs. Restorative analog power reigned o'er me. One of my chief caveats: I would not purchase anything on vinyl that I already owned on compact disc. Well, that rule didn't last long as I found comfort in...

It might only be a temporary home, yet Neil Finn is so glad to be living in the USA. His house is crowded again. Well, actually, at the moment, just days before the start of Crowded House's North American tour, he's chatting from a hotel room in New York. Finn and his wife Sharon were planning to share a rented apartment with longtime bandmate Nick Seymour, whose family had just arrived from their home in Dublin, Ireland. But the building at 240 East Houston Street on the Lower East Side caught fire July 8, less than 24 hours before he made this phone call. No injuries were reported, but water from the fire hoses caused enough damage to send the Crowded House-guests packing. This isn't exactly the burning desire Finn was expecting from America. Just another day in the life...

Now that Eminem is back on top of the charts, it looks like Slim Shady isn't planning on budging anytime soon. For the third week in a row, Em's Recovery will hold on to the pole position this week, moving another 229,000 copies to push the disc close to the 1.3 million mark, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Also not budging is Drake, whose Thank Me Later holds steady in the #2 spot thanks to 74,000 more units served for a one-month total of more than 782,000.
Coming in at the #3 position is the long-delayed official solo debut of Outkast's Big Boi, Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, which sold 62,000 copies. At #10 is the latest from Enrique Iglesias, Euphoria, which had a soft landing of 27,000.
