Now that the busy winter fest schedule of Sundance, Rotterdam and the Berlinale has concluded, we’ve now got our eyes on the likes of True/False and SXSW. While, True/False does not specialize in attention grabbing world premieres, it does provide a late winter haven for cream of the crop non-fiction fare from all the previously mentioned fests and a selection of overlooked genre blending films presented in a down home setting. This year will mark my first trip to the Columbia, Missouri based fest, where I hope to catch a little of everything, from their hush-hush secret screenings, to selections from their Neither/Nor series, this year featuring chimeric Polish cinema of decades past, to a spotlight of Adam Curtis’s incisive oeuvre. But truth be told, it is SXSW, with its slew of high profile world premieres being announced, such as Alex Gibney’s Steve Jobs...

Fans of early '90s-era gothic & industrial music will no doubt know the name of Athan Maroulis, co-founder of legendary dark electronic project Spahn Ranch. Relocating from Hollywood to his home turf of New York after Spahn disbanded in 2000, Maroulis has drawn creative inspiration from New York City for many projects – from the production of vintage jazz and blues recordings to a variety of gothic, synth-pop and electro-industrial acts including Razed in Black and Black Tape for a Blue Girl (of which he is an official member as of 2009). For his latest solo project Noir, Athan casts his creative light on the Big Apple once again, now filtered through a hauntingly romantic perspective that is equal parts '40s detective drama, vintage sci-fi and The Twilight Zone (he cites that show's creator Rod Serling as one of his inspirations), merged in a style he describes as “a dreamy death trip of sensuality.

5. Ally Condie
Starting the list off at number five is Ally Condie and her Matched trilogy. The series follows protagonist Cassia Reyes in a dystopian future where people are paired up for marriage by Society. Love and attraction don’t play a part in the matching of the newly turned seventeen year olds, but rather the pairing is strictly based on science and algorithms. When Cassia is paired up with her childhood best friend, Xander Carrow, her future looks bright, until she begins to fall in love with Ky Markham, an outcast amongst their society.
While it seems that all popular young adult novels these days fall under the dystopian banner, Condie’s work is both gripping and greatly refreshing. And while her book does play with the ever present teenage love triangle, hers doesn’t feel forced or generic. Cassia’s doubt, fear and uncertainty come across as genuine,...

Monocyte #3 Idw Story: menton3 & Kasra Ghanbari Art: menton3
Monocyte has all the character of a truly visionary anime and the convolution of David Lynch’s most bizarre piece of cinema. If you are a reader who prefers your story arcs well-defined and your action sequences clear-cut and colorful, Monocyte is not for you. If you enjoy a trip into the mind you might not have taken since your last early-hour nightmare, you’d be a fool to miss it.
In the comic, there are two races of immortals who have reached a veritable stalemate, and a one-eyed being—the Monocyte—is determined to take them both down. There are no simple pencil lines to be found, here; only full paintings, abstract imagery, and quotations from psalms that blend in so well with the actual dialogue you’d be pressed to figure out the difference between the two.
This is a very powerful,...

You know her as Emily, Sam's beautifully scarred fiancee in the 'Twilight' movies, but you probably wouldn't recognize Tinsel Korey walking down the street. While her 'Twilight' co-stars are constantly fawned over by diehard fans, Korey says that she can walk around incognito, since her character is somewhat disguised by the bangs and the scar.
Beyond 'Twilight,' Korey is best known as an indie movie queen. She garnered accolades for her role as Blue Girl in Carl Bessai's 'Unnatural & Accidental.' She's poised to wow audiences again in 'Stained,' which is being released on DVD on Aug. 30. This time around, she channels her inner dark side to play a schizophrenic serial killer.
Despite all of her serious roles, Korey is actually quite a goofball. She'll have a chance to showcase her silly side in the upcoming flick 'Fishing Naked,...

If one has the smile that appeals to the whole 'Universe' and the other has that 'special something' that enhances smiles the world over, then, don't you feel that the coming together of the two is just inevitable? Well, we are talking about the former 'Miss Universe' Lara Dutta, who, as per the latest buzz, has been signed up by the oral care major Colgate Palmolive as their brand ambassador. According to Bollywood Hungama's confirmed sources, "Lara's name was playing on the minds of the Colgate officials since quite sometime now. And there couldn't have been a better time to sign on Lara as their brand ambassador". True-Blue girl that Lara always is, this association is something that is bound to sparkle its way to (smiling) glory! Lara Dutta however was unavailable for comment.
