Burt Young, a former boxer who was in Sylvester Stallone’s corner as his brother-in-law Paulie in the six Rocky films and received a supporting actor Oscar nomination for his turn in the original, has died. He was 83.

Burt Young, who played Paulie in six of the “Rocky” films starring Sylvester Stallone, drawing an Oscar nomination for supporting actor for his performance in the 1976 original, has died, his daughter Anne Morea Steingieser confirmed to the New York Times. He was 83.
Roger Ebert gave Young his props for his performance in the first “Rocky” film: “And Burt Young as (Adrian’s) brother — defeated and resentful, loyal and bitter, caring about people enough to hurt them just to draw attention to his grief.” The New York Times — in an absolutely scathing, completely dismissive review of the film — nevertheless said: “Burt Young is effective as Rocky’s best friend, a beer-guzzling mug.”

Michael Imperioli enlisted a little supernatural help a la “Bewitched” to get “Summer of Sam” greenlit.
The “Sopranos” star co-wrote the script for the film based on real-life serial killer David Berkowitz Aka the Son of Sam, who terrorized New York in 1977. “Summer of Sam” was co-written and directed by Spike Lee, with both Imperioli and Lee having cameos in the film, which was released in 1999. Mira Sorvino, Adrien Brody, Jennifer Esposito, and John Leguizamo also starred.
In a clip from upcoming documentary “Ghosts of the Chelsea Hotel (and Other Rock & Roll Stories),” directed by Danny Garcia, Imperioli recalled asking a “witch” for assistance to get the film made while living at the hotel. Imperioli moved in at age 29.

The characters in "The Sopranos" might be the invention of series creator David Chase, but that doesn't mean that he and the cast didn't draw inspiration from real life. Several of the best characters in the show are loosely based on real mobsters and tough guys from the old neighborhood. Michael Imperioli's character Christopher Moltisanti was not written with a notable real-life counterpart in mind, but the actor did draw on someone he knew growing up to help him better understand and perform the role.
Tony Soprano and his cohorts were obviously inspired by the real-life mafiosos of New York and New Jersey. While series creator David Chase hasn't named any names — he's no snitch — some actual criminals have parallels to the "Sopranos" characters. For instance, Anthony "Tony Boy" Boiardo of the New Jersey crime family also attended therapy sessions to manage anxiety, per The New York Post. While Chase hasn't gone into specifics,...

Updated, July 5: Michael Imperioli returned to Instagram to clarify his comments forbidding “bigots and homophobes” to watch his filmography. Imperioli is now stating that the post was “satirical” and meant to showcase the absurdity of discrimination as a whole.
“After turning down invitations to appear on various news programs, I thought it best just to clarify,” Imperioli wrote. “The post referred to here was a satirical and symbolic take on where blatantly discriminatory Supreme Court decisions are taking us as a nation: into utter division and possibly far worse. I believe in religious freedom, freedom of speech, and the right for individuals to pursue happiness. I also believe in the separation of church and state as stated in the First Amendment. I believe that all people regardless of race, religion, color, creed, gender or sexuality are entitled to freedom, equality, rights and protection under the laws of our nation.

Ray Stevenson died on location in Italy this week while working on the film Cassino in Ischi. In it, he plays Nic Cassino, who appears to be the title character. But throughout his career the actor was renowned for strong supporting roles. Stevenson exemplified this “one for all” spirit as Porthos in The Three Musketeers (2011) and honed it through The Book of Eli (2010), King Arthur (2004), the Thor movies, and the upcoming Star Wars Disney+ series, Ashoka. He was at his most supportive, even as a lead character, when he played legionnaire Titus Pullo in HBO’s Rome. Pullo was a warrior with a heart of gold, but at one point he could also be the second-hand-man to an early version of a mob kingpin.
But Stevenson was second to no one in the role of Danny Greene, the titular character of writer-director Jonathan Hensleigh’s 2011 gangster-genre love letter, Kill the Irishman.

The former series co-stars host podcast “Talking Sopranos,” which looks back at every episode of the beloved David Chase-led mafia series. The podcast began in April 2020 with Imperioli and Schirripa reexamining the series with guest stars ranging from Lorraine Bracco to David Chase. The podcast concluded in December 2021 after 91 episodes a bestselling book, titled “Woke Up This Morning: The Definitive Oral History of ‘The Sopranos.'” An extended version of the podcast, including a bonus episode on prequel film “The Many Saints of Newark,” now debuts on Max.
Imperioli played Christopher Moltisanti, the nephew and confidante of Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), in the Emmy-winning HBO series. Schirripa later joined the cast as Bobby Bacala, Tony’s enforcer and later brother-in-law.

It took Aubrey Plaza close to two decades to finish “The Sopranos.”
The “White Lotus” Season 2 actress starred opposite “Sopranos” alum Michael Imperioli but had not seen the iconic HBO mafia series’ finale until she recently binged the show with “New Girl” and “Minx” star Jake Johnson.
“I’m shook,” Plaza told Vanity Fair of finally watching the polarizing “The Sopranos” series finale. “Yesterday I was like, ’Oh my God, what do you think happened?’ And [Jake] was like, ‘I don’t know but I was crying,’ and I was like, ‘I was crying too.’ I was like, ‘This is ridiculous, that we’re going through “Sopranos” finale stuff.'”
Even though “The Sopranos” is streaming on HBO platform Max, Plaza still purchased the entire show on iTunes, to husband Jeff Baena’s dismay. Plaza cited the frustrating aspect of trying to navigate streamers and keeping track of what’s available.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Blue Bloods Season 13 finale “Forgive Us Our Trespasses.”] It’s a full Reagan family dinner table at the end of the Blue Bloods Season 13 finale, though plans do change from what originally brings Nicky (Sami Gayle) and Jack Reagan (Tony Terraciano) back. Still, Frank (Tom Selleck) makes it known (twice!) how much he loves having everyone there. See, the two were in town for what they thought would be Erin’s (Bridget Moynahan) announcement that she was officially running for Manhattan Da. However, after finding out that an offender who was supposed to be in a program following the assault of a woman attacked again and getting hounded by the press, it quickly becomes clear that what she wanted isn’t what she wants. After the election, she’ll be too busy wining and dining, giving speeches at press conferences, and lobbying politicians to deal with victims, Anthony (Steven Schirripa) points out.

There are casual TV fans – the kind of people who are occasionally reminded of an old favorite show and fondly think ‘I used to love that’ but then get back on with wood-staining the garden fence, filling in their tax return or whatever demands adult life is currently making of them – and then there are the TV fans who don’t need reminding of their old favorite shows because they’re currently midway through their fifth Battlestar Galactica go-around while moderating several BSG r/television subreddits and crocheting a replica Saul Tigh eye patch.
The TV rewatch podcast is here for both types of listener – they’re a fun whoosh of nostalgia for the first, and the chance to finally get behind-the-scenes answers to burning questions for the second. Most of all, they’re a good time in the company of pals and a great excuse to revisit an old favorite.

Everyone who worked with James Gandolfini on the cast of "The Sopranos" sings his praises loudly and proudly. The generous and charming actor became friendly with just about everyone on the show, but even he got into arguments with his co-stars from time to time. The show involved a lot of intense back-and-forth, but perhaps no one butted heads with Gandolfini's character Tony as much as his sister Janice. As it turns out, the actress who played Janice, Aida Turturro, liked to push Gandolfini's buttons in real life, too.
"I knew him from 1992 and we used to fight back then, not really fight, but we were like husband and wife," Turturro told the New York Post. "I fell in love with him the first time we met; I felt like we were kindred spirits. I was like, 'Listen, you're not the boss of me, mister!' and I used to drive him crazy.

"The Sopranos" cast are all New Jersey icons now, but only one of them was before the series premiered. That was Steven Van Zandt, aka "Little Steven," of the E Street Band. Van Zandt is one of the band's guitarists, alongside Patti Scialfa, Nils Lofgren, and of course the Boss himself Bruce Springsteen. During their hiatus in the '90s, Van Zandt found a new gig on TV even though he had never acted before.
In 1997, Van Zandt gave a speech introducing The Rascals before they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "The Sopranos" creator David Chase saw this routine and contacted Van Zandt about appearing on his show. Van Zandt had previously conceived of the character Silvio Dante, a former hitman turned club owner. So, they added the character to Tony Soprano's crew. This The Simpsons review contains spoilers.
The Simpsons Season 34 Episode 13
The Simpsons presents one of its best secondary-character focused episodes with “The Many Saints of Springfield.” The pairing of Joe Mantegna’s Fat Tony and Harry Shearer’s Ned Flanders appears flagrantly contradictory, but it works for the same reason Season 33’s Fargo-influenced offering, “A Serious Flanders,” became a two-parter favorite: The enforced logic makes sense, the downward spiral is believable, and no character betray themselves. Though the circumstantial evidence does pile up under a fake mustache.
While in no way a mirror to The Sopranos prequel, “The Many Saints of Newark,” “The Many Saints of Springfield” maintains a beautifully consistent atmosphere of mob drama throughout. Even the opening couch gag is a yarn that spins masterfully dark, and ends on a note of threadbare terror. The dust bunnies are as harrowing as the vintage baseball card is enticing,...

During its six seasons on the air, "The Sopranos" became a regular part of Sunday nights in America. Before it made it onto small screens everywhere, the show was born from the Sunday night traditions of the series creator, David Chase. Many of his characters were based directly on his own family members and the conversations they would have over dinner at the end of each week. One such character was a huge favorite for Chase, the cast, and viewers alike — Uncle Junior.
The idea for "The Sopranos" was conceived in Chase's family home. "I used to tell people stories about my mother," Chase recalled in "Woke Up This Morning: The Definitive Oral History of The Sopranos". "My wife, Denise, was the first one to say, 'You got to write a movie about her, or you got to write a TV show about her, because she's so funny.'" With this mindset,...

"The Sopranos" was always a little controversial, and that controversy made things difficult for Ilene Landress, a producer and production manager for the show. Talking to Michael Imperioli (who played Christopher) and Steve Schirripa (who played Bobby) for their book "Woke Up This Morning: The Definitive Oral History of the Sopranos," Landress talked about the first time they had trouble securing a filming location for a scene.
The scene in question was one of the show's many, many funeral scenes, this one taking place in the middle of the penultimate episode of the first season, "Isabella." It was originally filmed in an Italian funeral home in Little Italy. They didn't get to finish filming the scene in that funeral home, however, because they were thrown out of the place halfway through. Why? Well, it might've had something to do with what Uncle Junior (Dominic Chianese) said in the middle of the funeral.

James Gandolfini is best known for playing New Jersey mobster Tony Soprano on the hit HBO series "The Sopranos," but his real-life personality couldn't have been more different from the brutal mafioso. Gandolfini shared a few problems with his fictional counterpart, including alcohol abuse and a bad temper, but no one is perfect, and his castmates have shared many stories of his generosity and warmth.
One of the best and most important episodes in the series, "College," takes place in the first season, and doubles as the perfect introduction to what the series would become. Tony takes his daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) on a tour of colleges in Maine but runs across a former associate who went into witness protection, forcing him to quickly learn to balance his work life and family life in a disturbing new way. Gandolfini was great at bringing a warmth to Tony that's evident in...

David Chase's "The Sopranos" absolutely blew audiences' minds when it hit the small screen in 1999. The series followed New Jersey mafioso Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) and his associates as they tried to reconcile their old-world mafia lifestyle with suburban life at the turn of the millennium. The series was often at its best when it put mundanity and mobster business in contrast, and few episodes did it better than "College" from season 1. In the episode, Tony's daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) wants to go look at colleges and her dear old dad takes her. She asks him point blank about his mob life, and he's surprisingly honest with her, though he turns around and lies to her when he's forced to kill a former associate during their little Maine road trip. The episode beautifully sets up Tony's double life, and the cinematography in the episode ended up setting a visual...

"The Sopranos" features some incredible episodes. It was more cinematic than a gangster show was expected to be in the '90s and, as /Film's Shae Sennett writes, creator David Chase was aware of its potential as a national phenomenon. It was a television show about a Mafia man, of course, but borne of Chase's experiences in therapy, this mob boss would learn everything about himself and change little — a concept that would eventually dominate the wave of prestige TV to come.
For its six-season run from 1999 to 2007, the HBO crime series mostly stayed in northern New Jersey, where the Dimeo crime family would operate with Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) at the top. But some of its most celebrated episodes — Christopher goes to Hollywood, Carmela and Rosalie go to Paris — broke free of the show's own boundaries and gave a chance for the traveler-protagonist to add some depth to their character arc.

Before starring on HBO's hit prestige drama "The Sopranos," Steven Van Zandt's claim to fame was as a solo artist, hit songwriter, activist, and member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. He scored the memorable role of the wingtip-wearing consigliere Silvio Dante on "The Sopranos" despite no acting experience. As advisor to crime boss Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), Van Zandt's Dante is more than a wise guy caricature; Silvio is among the most level-headed members of Tony's crew, mediating meetings and executing orders but unafraid to tell his boss the truth (which Van Zandt compared to working with The Boss). In Brett Martin's "The Sopranos: The Complete Book," Van Zandt describes Tony's lifelong friend as "the only member of the family who was happy where he was" with few ambitions beyond those in his backstory – a background created by Van Zandt himself.
