“You don’t wanna know how alone I’ve been,” Billie Eilish sings halfway through her excellent new album, Hit Me Hard and Soft. That sums up the paradox of her life in one line — a shy weirdo kid who became a mega-pop star too fast, a romantic who’s never had the luxury of a private love life, a target for misogyny since her mid-teens. At 22, she’s already rewired the way pop is experienced. But she has the power to get the whole world on her side even...

Fans of Marcus King might get a bit of a surprise when they throw on his new record. The South Carolina native built his success on his double-barrel growl of a voice and roiling, capacious guitar crunch, which placed him squarely in the Southern jam-band tradition. King’s last LP, 2022’s Young Blood, was a rugged set of Seventies guitar rock recorded with artisanal throwback specificity at Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Studio in Nashville. On his new one, King pairs with another production titan, Rick Rubin, who helps him...

By the mid-2010s, Daymé Arocena had become a household name in her native Havana. She’d been called “the world’s next jazz phenomenon,” and her work with the Cuban-Canadian jazz band Maqueque helped win a 2015 Juno Award. When she’d walk down the street, people would stop her, recognizing her as the singer with the powerful, heart-atomizing voice. At restaurants, fans would come up to her and greet her enthusiastically. “I’d built a reputation there,” she remembers. “But I started to feel like I’d hit a ceiling in Cuba.

Oasis are among the finalists for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024. We won’t know for sure whether the band will be inducted until April, but frontman Liam Gallagher doesn’t seem to care either away.
Responding to the news of Oasis’ nomination, Gallagher tweeted on Sunday, “Fuck the Rock n Roll hall of fame its full of Bumbaclarts LG x.” (Bumbaclart is British slang for
menstrual pads or toilet paper.)
Gallagher expounded on his thoughts in Twitter replies to fans. He called the Hall of Fame “a load of bollox” and said, “I don’t need some wank award by some geriatric in a cowboy hat,” he wrote. He also encouraged fans to vote for other nominees, such as Sinead O’Connor and Mariah Carey.

Update: In celebration of Sam Raimi’s The Quick and the Dead being added to The Criterion Channel as part of this month’s Women of the West series, Sharon Stone is clarifying her involvement in some of the casting. The popular story is that Stone paid the salaries of her then-unknown co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe, but on Instagram she’s saying that’s only partially true with her giving credit to producer Mike Medavoy for at least part of the casting.
“Yes, I paid @leonardodicaprio’s salary out of mine. No I didn’t pay @russellcrowe’s, but I did ask for the film to be delayed two weeks so we could get him here from Australia, and our producer @mikemedavoyup agreed to the delay. And to cover those expenses.”

Chris Statpleton’s Higher sees the Kentucky-born country singer relying on familiar sonic and lyrical tropes: big guitars, ragged vocals, and lyrical themes of love, weariness, and tattered masculinity. But while Stapleton’s voice is as expressive as ever throughout his fifth studio album, the songwriting is safe and, at times, almost anonymous.
Higher opens with “What Am I Gonna Do,” which is loaded with jam-inspired guitar breaks and a loose, spontaneous-feeling groove. The track serves as a sort of template for many of the songs that follow—mostly midtempo country-rockers that are either expressions of tenderness and devotion to a lover or forlorn ruminations on a former one. While tracks like “South Dakota,” “The Bottom,” and “Crosswind” are all competently performed and produced, the music itself feels like a dime-store imitation of Eric Church or even the Allman Brothers Band.

Fourteen years after Drake broke through with his So Far Gone mixtape, public reaction to his new projects has grown predictable. The Toronto rapper/singer will run up numbers on Spotify and Apple Music because, well, he’s the king of streaming. A social-media war will inevitably break out over the quality of his music, his reputed softness in comparison to past street-hardened GOATs, and his beefs with sundry bold-faced rivals. In recent months, those online debates have grown coarse and self-righteous, thanks to an unfortunate lyrical shift towards fellating...

The landmark 1985 charity concert, Live Aid, has been turned into a stage musical. Titled Just for One Day, the show will feature songs by Queen, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, and more, and is set to premiere next year at the Old Vic in London.
In a new interview, the original Live Aid’s organizer, Bob Geldof, explained that the show is “based on actual testimony from the day,” and will give a stage to “real people telling their story.” To that end, it won’t be your run-of-the-mill jukebox romp, but rather, a fresh narrative meant to inspire a new generation of rock music lovers.
Among the other artists whose songs are included are: David Bowie, The Who, U2, The Police, The Pretenders, The Cars, Status Quo, Paul Weller, Sade, The Boomtown Rats, Bryan Adams, Diana Ross, and Ultravox.
“This isn’t a tribute thing,” Geldof told the BBC.

Exclusive: Rock icon Bob Geldof is collaborating on a stage musical about the global phenomenon that was Live Aid. The show, called Just For One Day, devised and directed by Luke Sheppard (& Juliet), will have its world premiere at the Old Vic Theatre in London early next year.
Live Aid was a concert like no other, organized by Geldof and fellow rock ‘n’ roller Midge Ure in July 1985 to raise funds and awareness for the famine crisis then taking place in Ethiopia.
Just For One Day will run at the Old Vic from January 26-March 30.
The UK leg of Live Aid kicked off at Wembley Stadium where the likes of Queen with frontman Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Elton John, George Michael, Sting, Sade, The Who, Paul McCartney, U2, Geldof’s the Boomtown Rats, Ure, Paul Weller and tons of others rocked and raved in the presence of thousands of spectators — including Charles and Diana,...

“Do you have any idea the kind of risks a woman like me takes every time she decides to have a little bit of fun?” So says our female protagonist in writer/director Jt Mollner‘s Strange Darling, a film that dares us to question the roles men and women are expected to play. Are women just prudes who don’t love casual sex? Are men just rapist serial killers waiting for their next mark? What exactly are the boundaries of consent? Strange Darling asks these questions, making for a smarter-than-you’d-expect entry into the cat and mouse thriller genre.
Following an opening scroll informing us that the film we are about to see is a dramatization of the final known killings of a serial killer’s multi-state killing spree, we are introduced to “The Lady” who, in an extended slow motion sequence that plays over the opening credits, is...

P!Nk didn’t let severe thunderstorms stop her from playing a concert at Nationals Park in Washington, DC on Monday night. Instead, the singer weathered heavy rain and wind in order to the stage the highly choreographed and acrobatic production — which, at one point, even saw her soar high above the stadium in a harness.
The beginning of the concert was briefly delayed as fans were asked to wait inside of the venue’s concourse until the worst of the storms passed. P!Nk finally took the stage around 9:15 p.m. local time but still managed to run through a full 23-song set that mixed greatest hits, covers of Bob Dylan and Sade, and various aerial stunts. “Singin’ in the rain……. What a glorious feeling,” she wrote in an Instagram post alongside video of her performance. Watch the clip and other fan-captured footage below.

Beyoncé’s back-to-back nights at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, this past weekend were two of the most star-studded shows of the Renaissance tour thus far. Greta Gerwig and America Ferrera watched the show from risers, while singer and songwriter Kehlani was close enough to the stage to snap a selfie with Beyoncé. Laverne Cox attended both nights and penned a heartfelt, revelatory caption about how the concert made her feel born again. Also in the audience was Madonna, who received a shoutout from one queen to another.

Catching Killers season 3 premiered on June 23 on Netflix.
In previous seasons, the true crime documentary series explored infamous murders such as The Happy Face Killer, Btk, and the Phoenix Serial Shooter. Now the latest season dives into the stories of four new killers: the Railroad Killer, the New York Zodiac Killer, the Olympic Park Bomber and the D.C. Sniper.
However, the Netflix series is not the first time these serial killers have been looked at by the media. If you want to know where to find more information about each of these four cases, here is where you can look.
Railroad Killer
Angel Maturino Reséndiz, also known as the Railroad Killer is suspected of killing at least 23 people across the United States and Mexico in the 1990s. Before voluntarily surrendering himself to law enforcement in 1999, Reséndiz was on the FBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted list. He also featured on the show America’s Most Wanted.

The 2024 Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony felt like a family reunion: Taylor Swift collaborator Liz Rose received a heartwarming performance by her teary-eyed daughter, Gloria Estefan performed lively hits alongside her grandson and husband, and Teddy Riley was joined by his musical brothers from Harlem.
Jeff Lynne and Glen Ballard were also part of the new class, which was celebrated Thursday night in New York City. Egot recipient Tim Rice and Post Malone also received special honors.
Liz Rose, who met Swift in her early teens and co-wrote songs on her first two albums, was honored with an emotional performance by her daughter Caitlin Rose. She sang Swift’s “White Horse,” which won the best country song Grammy in 2010.
The audience at the Marriott Marquis New York cheered Caitlin Rose on as she wiped tears from her face during the touching performance. Her voice cracked at times, beautifully, as she looked at her mother,...

Glenda Jackson, the two-time Oscar winner who walked away from a hugely successful acting career to spend nearly a quarter-century in the U.K. parliament, only to make a comeback on the stage, died Thursday. She was 87.
Jackson died peacefully after a brief illness at her home in Blackheath, London, and her family was at her side, her agent Lionel Larner said in a statement. “Today we lost one of the world’s greatest actresses, and I have lost a best friend of over 50 years,” he said.
She recently completed filming The Great Escaper opposite Michael Caine, Larner noted.
The British actress collected a slew of honors that included best actress Academy Awards for Women in Love (1969) and A Touch of Class (1973); two Emmys for her performance as Elizabeth I in the BBC miniseries Elizabeth R (a role she also played in the 1971 film Mary, Queen of Scots); and a...

Snoop Dogg has deferred his induction into the 2023 Songwriters Hall of Fame. The organization made the announcement just two days before this year’s ceremony, stating that he cited “personal reasons” (via Billboard) and will instead be inducted with the class of 2024.
The Long Beach rapper isn’t the only inductee from this year’s class to withdraw from the ceremony. Sade Adu has also deferred, though the Songwriters Hall of Fame has only said she will be inducted with a future class.
Jeff Lynne, Gloria Estefan, Teddy Riley, Glen Ballard, and Liz Rose will still be inducted at the ceremony, where Tim Rice will receive the organization’s highest honor, the Johnny Mercer Award. Meanwhile, Post Malone will be honored with the Hal David Starlight Award, which was created to celebrate “gifted songwriters who are at an apex in their careers and are making a significant impact in the...

Astrud Gilberto, who was just 22 years old when her lovely, laid-back and sultry vocals on the jazzy bossa nova “The Girl from Ipanema” made the song a massive global hit and one of the most recognizable melodies of the 1960s, died Monday. She was 83.
Her death was announced to the media by a family friend, the musician Paul Ricci, who did not provide additional details.
Born on March 5, 1940, in Salvador, Bahia, and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Gilberto was virtually unknown to the wider public when she was recruited by producer Creed Taylor, saxophonist Stan Getz and her then-husband, guitarist Joao Gilberto, and to lend her vocals on two songs for Getz/Gilberto. The album, recorded in 1963, would have a huge impact on the popularization of bossa nova music, in no small measure due to of one of those songs featuring Astrud: “The Girl from Ipanema,” released as a...

When The Standard Hotel on the Sunset Strip abruptly shut down in January of 2021, Bryan Rabin told The Hollywood Reporter that his weekly hub of celebrity-packed fabulosity — Giorgio’s nightclub — wasn’t over. Yes, it had been already on hiatus for the previous 10 months because of the Covid-19 pandemic (save for some virtual iterations). But, vowed Rabin, a few days after the Standard closed for good, “Giorgio’s is not closing. We’ll be back, when we get the pandemic under control, in a new location. Giorgio’s will rise from the ashes like a phoenix.”
Well, he meant it.
On May 13, starting at 10 p.m., Giorgio’s will be back. The invitation-only nightclub (“You have to know me,” says Rabin of how to nab a reservation) is reopening in a new home: Grandmaster Recorders, the Italian restaurant, bar and club in Hollywood that opened in late 2021 inside the former...

You might know “Walking in Memphis,” but how well do you know Marc Cohn? The singer-songwriter rose to fame in the early ’90s thanks to the AC staple, which earned him commercial success and a couple Grammy nominations as well. These days, Cohn’s name is best known in regards to his 1992 win for Best New Artist. While the win is definitely something to talk about, we can’t discuss it without understanding Cohn’s background, the song that led to such success, and the competition that Cohn faced on his way to the Grammy stage.

Best Pop Vocal Album is undoubtedly one of my favorite Grammy categories. The award has gone to many greats in pop music, from The Beatles to Billie Eilish. But one of my personal favorites has to be Sade’s 2001 win for their iconic album, “Lovers Rock,” one of the band’s most celebrated works. While Sade winning a Grammy wasn’t unusual, “Lovers Rock” differs from what you’d typically expect in a Best Pop Vocal Album winner, showing how much respect the band had from their peers against some heavy competition.
Sade was already well-liked by the Grammys before “Lovers Rock.” The group took home the coveted Best New Artist award in 1986 thanks to the success of their debut album, “Diamond Life,” as well as their sophomore release, “Promise,” which was peaking while voting was occurring. Their next win would come in 1994 for “No Ordinary Love,” the lead single off their fourth record,...

John Legend review, Royal Albert Hall: This no-frills, intimate concert shows the singer at his best
“We’re gonna get to know each other better tonight,” John Legend promises his audience, speaking smoothly over an easy piano melody. Billed as An Evening with John Legend, tonight’s concept is simple: just Legend, his voice, his life story and a piano. It’s a bold choice to stage an entire two-act Royal Albert Hall show alone with no accompaniment, but if there’s anyone who can keep an audience entertained for two hours, it’s Legend. His agile voice and virtuoso pianist skills shine when left to stand alone, even if the bare-bones nature of the staging is a little startling.

“Most people don’t know how to love/ That’s why they’re empty,” Kali Uchis muses on “Worth the Wait,” a gently unfurling slow jam from her third album, Red Moon in Venus. Over 15 tracks, the Colombian American pop star reveals that her own knowledge of love is overflowing, with songs that examine and revel in the emotion in all its forms. Judging by Red Moon’s candid lyrics, her own take on love is wide-eyed, yet not completely naive; it’s savvy, yet not corroded by past misfortune.

Kim Kardashian's kids are serving up the perfect group Halloween costume inspiration. On Oct. 28, the Skims founder posted Instagram photos of North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm posing in a studio dressed as famous R&b stars Aaliyah, Snoop Dogg, Sade, and Eazy-e, respectively. She captioned the carousel, "The Icons."
Channeling Aaliyah was 9-year-old North, wearing a colorblock Tommy Hilfiger set similar to the one the late singer wore in her famous 1996 campaign for the fashion brand. Kardashian's eldest daughter wore her hair stick straight and parted down the middle, just like the "One in a Million" singer often did in the '90s.
Saint, 6, dressed like Snoop Dogg in a plaid shirt, khakis, and Converse, with his hair styled in braids similar to the rapper's hairstyle over the years, most notably in a scene from his 2001 film "Baby Boy." The period-appropriate ‘80s pop hits assembled for Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” by veteran music supervisor Amanda Krieg Thomas provides a welcome contrast to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ eerie, otherworldly and ominous score.
Thomas, who has worked with Ryan Murphy and his production head Alexis Martin Woodall on “Pose,” “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” as well as his first two Netflix projects, “Ratched” and “The Politician,” credits the writers for several of the notable needle drops. Over the course of the 10-part series, you hear cheery Top 40 radio fodder of the time like Kc and the Sunshine Band’s “Please Don’t Go,” Chris Rea’s “Fool” to Patrick Crowley’s “Menergy,” Sade’s “Hang on to Your Love” and Noel’s “Silent Morning.” She was even tasked with acquiring Laotian pop songs for an episode.

A review of this week’s Atlanta, “Snipe Hunt,” coming up just as soon as I prank my daughter…
Early in “Snipe Hunt,” as Earn and Van are setting up the campsite where the two of them and Lottie will celebrate Lottie’s birthday, Van realizes that Earn bought a tent that’s much too big for the three of them to sleep in on a cold night. This is a classic multicam sitcom kind of setup, where the non-outdoorsman fails utterly to handle the demands of nature. Between that...
