BERLIN -- The hunt for partners to board an initiative to create a pan-European digital network of screens dedicated to showing local documentaries and other small European movies gathered pace here over the weekend. Spearheaded by Kees Ryninks, a former documentary producer and the head of the Netherlands Film Fund, the plan is set to establish a 175-strong satellite-linked digital network of screens across Europe. Bolstered by the European Union's Media Program to the tune of just less than €3 million ($3.8 million), the plan, dubbed European Docuzone (EDZ), aims within the next five years to set up cinema servers in theaters connected to digital projectors that receive films via satellite distribution. A central EDZ server will code the transmission to protect against piracy and will also be the information hub for users collating data on the number and timing of screenings at any given time across the network.
