Forty years ago, you might be hard-pressed to find anyone in the country who regularly watched the political affairs network called C-span, let alone anyone who actually knew what it was.
Today, the brand is as synonymous as Xerox (copy machines) or Scotch tape (adhesive tape) — it’s a stand-in for any kind of live television coverage related to the hearings, votes and political affairs of Congress and other government agencies, to include the White House.
If it’s political in nature, it’s probably on C-span. But not everything aired on C-Span originates with the networks.
Take, for instance, hearings from the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. Colloquially, political aficionados and even journalists refer to the coverage as originating from “C-span cameras,” even though they don’t.

Former White House Communications Director Hope Hicks took the stand in Manhattan court Friday to testify in the criminal trial of her ex-boss, Donald Trump.
Trump has been charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. The case, brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg last year, revolves around allegations that a 2016 hush-money payment made at Trump’s direction to adult film actress Stormy Daniels violated campaign finance laws.

Ronna McDaniel, the former chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, is joining NBC News as a political analyst.
McDaniel will start in her role on Sunday with an appearance on Meet the Press with Kristen Welker. She will sit for an interview, her first since stepping down last month. The network said that the conversations to secure the interview started months before McDaniel was hired as a contributor.
McDaniel will appear on NBC News and MSNBC, and will be part of the network’s campaign and election night programming. That also will include appearances on NBC News Now.
McDaniel, the second woman to serve as RNC chair, was a steadfast defender of former President Donald Trump. About a year after the attacks on the Capitol, she presided over an RNC resolution to censure Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for their work as members of a House committee investigating the siege.

Elise Stefanik, who many view as a top contender to be Donald Trump’s 2024 pick as vice president, says she would not have certified Joe Biden’s election if she, not Mike Pence, were VP at the time.
“I would not have done what Mike Pence did,” the GOP conference chair told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins Thursday night when asked what she would have done as vice president on Jan. 6, 2021, when thousands of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol as Pence was presiding over the certification of the Electoral College votes.

There’s a new senior player in TV’s true-crime industry.
Paul Ryan has been named executive producer of NBC News’ “Dateline,’ reporting to Liz Cole, who became the long-running newsmagazine’s senior executive producer last year. Both elevations come after David Corvo, the NBC News executive who had long overseen the series, moved to tackle consulting duties.
Ryan has been with show for several years, and was most recently its senior producer and creative director, managing all aspects of the editorial and production process. But he will now be tasked with other duties, particularly finding ways to keep “Dateline,” with its long run of murder mysteries and occasional big “gets” by NBC News correspondents, more arresting than ever.
Like its main counterparts, CBS News’ “48 Hours” and ABC News’ “20/20,” the “Dateline” franchise extends well beyond its TV perch. NBC sells the show into syndication, and “Dateline” stories also fuel podcasts,...

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said that he will resign his congressional seat at the end of the year, bringing to an end an often tumultuous tenure in GOP leadership.
“I will continue to recruit our country’s best and brightest to run for elected office,” he wrote in a Wall Street Journal op ed that was published on Wednesday. “The Republican Party is expanding every day, and I am committed to lending my experience to support the next generation of leaders.”
McCarthy was ousted as House speaker in October, after just 10 months, amid bitter divisions with members on the far right. He faced a decision on his future this week, the deadline for filing for reelection for his Bakersfield area congressional seat.

Donald Trump Jr. blasted Fox News for spending too much time focusing on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) over the past few years.
The son of Donald Trump appeared on Newsmax’s The Balance and was asked about his feelings toward Jp Morgan Chase chairman Jamie Dimon endorsing Nikki Haley, who is currently running for president.
“The problem is they fear Donald Trump because they understand that Donald Trump will do what’s right for the American people, not what’s right for Wall Street billionaires and executives like Jamie Dimon,” Trump Jr. said. “They want someone who answers to them. They want someone that has no choice but to answer to them because their entire political existence is due to them and their money. So they’re desperate to stop that. Rupert Murdoch was sent off with a sizzle reel.

The New York Times is planning a major new interview franchise, one that will live across its audio podcast division and within The New York Times Magazine.
The new franchise will be released as a weekly podcast, and will also be published as a Q&a in the Magazine, it will be co-hosted by David Marchese, who writes the Magazine’s “Talk” interview column, and Lulu Garcia-Navarro, the veteran NPR journalist who joined the Times to host its First Person interview series.
The new interview series will launch in 2024, with a name still to be determined, though in a note to staff Thursday, Times audio chief Sam Dolnick, Magazine editor Jake Silverstein and director of audio Paula Szchuman said that it will “build on the success of David’s Talk column, which has been one of the most popular features on our site over the past five years.”

“Nothing is what it seems.” A seemingly offhand remark made early in Don’t Look Now is slowly revealed to be the theme around which the film revolves.
Nicolas Roeg’s directorial efforts may not have always connected with audiences immediately, but his impressionistic approach has aged like fine wine. Don’t Look Now, in particular, was decades ahead of its time upon its release in 1973.
The screenplay — written by Allan Scott and Chris Bryant (The Awakening), based on a 1971 short story by Daphne du Maurier — analyzes the psychological effects of trauma through a horror lens; a motif we’ve seen explored many times over in recent years, from Ari Aster’s filmography to David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy.
Following the tragic drowning of their young daughter, architect John Baxter and bereaved wife Laura travel from their English country home to Venice to oversee the restoration of a church. After a...

Update: Kevin McCarthy spoke to reporters for nearly 50 minutes, in which he at first tried to strike a tone of gratitude and positivity about his tenure but then got into some score setting of the eight members who voted to oust him.
He said that they are not conservative but “angry and chaotic.” Of Rep. Nancy Mace (R-Sc), he said, “is a whole other story,” suggesting that she is lying when she says that he hasn’t kept his word.
Of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-fl), who led the effort to remove him, McCarthy said, “You know it was personal. It was not about spending….It was about ethics.” Gaetz is the subject of an ethics committee investigation. “Just because Gaetz said something, don’t believe it’s true. I haven’t heard him say one true thing yet.”

Lachlan Murdoch, the 52-year-old scion, has — at least for now — won the game of succession at the media empire built by his aging father, Rupert.
Lachlan is not a change agent. His assumption of sole day-to-day command at News Corporation and Fox Corporation is a story of continuity — which likely means that the media organs under his watch will continue their signature mix of tabloid populism, climate denial, and mindless Maga-mania. In the letter announcing Lachlan’s promotion, Rupert called him “absolutely committed to the cause.”

New Delhi, May 19 (Ians) Google has announced it will migrate one per cent of Chrome users to Privacy Sandbox and deprecate third-party cookies for them in Q1 2024.
The move will support developers in conducting real world experiments that assess the readiness and effectiveness of their products without third-party cookies, said Anthony Chavez, VP, Privacy Sandbox.
The Privacy Sandbox is an ecosystem-wide initiative to ensure an open and thriving web, by improving user privacy and giving businesses the tools they need to succeed online.
Google has collaborated with the web ecosystem to develop new, privacy-preserving technologies that don’t rely on cross-site tracking identifiers or covert techniques like fingerprinting.
“In addition, in Q4 of 2023, we will introduce the ability for developers to simulate Chrome third-party cookie deprecation for a configurable percentage of their users. This will enable developer-controlled testing that can benefit from higher levels of third party cookie-less traffic,” Chavez informed.

Updated with Fox News statement, settlement sums & Dominion CEO remarks: Fox News has settled Dominion Voting Systems’ $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against the Rupert Murdoch-owned organization, averting a lengthy, expensive and certain to be embarrassing trial.
“The parties have resolved their case,” Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric M. Davis just told the court Tuesday afternoon, offering no details. News of the settlement was strategically made public right before Wall Street ceased trading for the day.
Fox paid Dominion $787.5 million under the deal, lawyers for the company said afterwards outside the courtroom. “Fox has admitted to telling lies about Dominion that caused enormous damage to my company, our employees and the customers we serve,” said Dominion CEO John Poulos. “Nothing can make up for that.”

Rupert Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch could be called upon to testify in Dominion Voting Systems’ defamation lawsuit suit against Fox News and Fox Corp., per a Delaware judge who says he is not against calling on the media moguls.

Rupert Murdoch, Lachlan Murdoch, Fox Corporation board member Paul Ryan and Fox Corp. executive Viet Dinh can be compelled to testify in Dominion’s upcoming defamation trial against Fox News, a judge said on Wednesday.
Delaware Judge Eric M. Davis said that Dominion would have to issue a trial subpoena to force such live testimony, but he would not quash it over issues of inconvenience or because they previously have sat for depositions. Davis cited court precedent that officers, directors and managing agents of a Delaware corporation can be compelled to appear.
“Both Fox and Dominion have made these four parties very relevant,” Davis said.
He added, “If Dominion wants to bring them live, they need to do a trial subpoena and I would not quash it and I would compel them to come.”
He also cited issues with Rupert Murdoch’s deposition and whether questions asked of him were clear or unfairly prejudicial.

Fox News is about to have one of its biggest events in years, and everyone from CEO Suzanne Scott to prominent anchors like Tucker Carlson and Maria Bartiromo to primetime chief Meade Cooper is likely to attend some part of it. If Fox’s parent company has its way, however, Rupert Murdoch, the guiding force behind much of Fox Corporation, will not.

Lachlan Murdoch, in his first public comments about a defamation lawsuit against Fox News that’s been grabbing headlines, said he believes the network is even handed and all the “noise” is more reflective of the nation’s divided politics than anything else.
“It think fundamentally, what I would say about it, is [that] a news organization has an obligation and it is an obligation to report the news fulsomely, wholesomely and without fear or favor. And that is what Fox News has always done and will always do,” the Fox Corp. CEO told a Morgan Stanley investor conference Thursday.
“And I think a lot of the noise is not about law … it is really about politics. And that’s unfortunately more reflective of this sort of polarized society we live in today.”

If the lawsuit between Fox News Channel and Dominion Voting Systems goes to trial, it will be devastating for the news channel, rival cable network CNN’s Oliver Darcy says.
Rupert Murdoch stated in a deposition he gave last month that he knew Fox News Channel was spreading false claims about the 2020 presidential election. Claims that Dominion voting machines were compromised are the basis of a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems.
Darcy said Murdoch’s deposition will be detrimental to the channel, especially if the case goes to trial.
“It will be devastating for Fox, I mean this is a taste of what’s to come. Imagine Rupert Murdoch on the stand, Lachlan Murdoch on the stand, Sean Hannity on the stand, Tucker Carlson on the stand,” said Darcy.

Donald Trump on Monday accused Fox News of downplaying his popularity with potential 2024 voters in favor of boosting potential challenger Ron DeSantis.
“FoxNews is promoting Ron DeSanctus so hard and so much that there’s not much time left for Real News,” the former president wrote on Truth Social. “Reminds me of 2016 when they were pushing ‘Jeb!’ The new Fox Poll, which have always been purposely terrible for me, has “Trump Crushing DeSanctimonious,” but they barely show it. Singer Courtney Love revealed she was once offered to play Janis Joplin in a movie while discussing the possibility of a biopic about her late husband, Kurt Cobain.
“There was talk of a biopic a few years back,” she told HuffPost in July 2013. “I think I changed my mind about it, but I did do a deal with Universal.” Love named some of the actors considered to portray her in the film. “Scarlett Johansson was into it; I was also into Michelle Williams. Former President Donald Trump and his allies have already started charting out possible plans of attack against likely 2024 rival and Florida governor Ron DeSantis, according to three people familiar with the matter.
“This is where…Trump kicks him in the nuts,” one person close to the ex-president says.
The former president’s determination to obliterate his ascendent rival underscores just how unwilling Trump is to pass the torch and surrender his stewardship of the GOP — even if it shreds the party. As Trump and his ideological heir DeSantis vie for control of the Republican Party,...

After days of public humiliation, and a chaotic 14th loss, Republican Kevin McCarthy has finally been elected Speaker of the House of Representatives on the 15th vote.
Just past Friday midnight, the Bakersfield, California, congressman at last secured the votes necessary to take hold of the gavel, following a grueling series of failed ballots that saw a gang of nearly 20 Republicans repeatedly lock arms against the longtime House GOP leader.
The impasse began to break on Friday morning. McCarthy held a call with Republicans, proclaiming he and the party were in a “good position.

Former House Speaker John Boehner choked up as he described the legacy of Nancy Pelosi, a partisan rival who nevertheless was “unfailingly gracious to me, my family and frankly to my team here in Washington.”
“My girls told me: tell the speaker how much we admire her,” Boehner said in a Capitol Hill ceremony on Wednesday to unveil the official portrait of Pelosi, who is stepping down from Democratic leadership after 20 years.
Boehner, a Republican, succeeded Pelosi as speaker after Republicans won the House in the 2010 midterms. He stepped down in 2015, and was succeeded by Paul Ryan. Pelosi became speaker again after Democrats reclaimed the majority in 2018. She announced last month that she would step away from leadership, as Republicans prepare to retake a slim majority in the House.
“No other speaker of house in the modern era, Republican or Democrat, has wielded the gavel with such authority or with such consistent results,...

Rupert Murdoch and the Murdoch Family Trust will not vote in favor of a Fox-News Corp. merger unless the combination has the blessing of special committees of outside directors, and of non-Murdoch affiliated stockholders.
The boards of both companies issued statements Tuesday in an “update on the process in response to recent inquiries.” Special committees began exploring a recombination of the two companies last month at Murdoch’s request, prompting some blowback by some outside investors who don’t think it’s in the best interests of either.
“Mr. Murdoch and the Murdoch Family Trust will not vote in favor of a transaction unless it is both recommended by the Special Committee and approved by a majority vote of the shares held by non-affiliated stockholders entitled to vote,” Fox and News Corp. said today in dueling SEC filings.

On the surface, Kevin McCarthy looks like a shoe-in to become the next Speaker of the House. He won an internal vote of the conference 188-31, over right-winger Andy Biggs of Arizona, to retain the party’s top leadership post. If Republicans just stick together during a House floor vote in January, and McCarthy will get the gavel.
But that’s a big if.
In the red-ripple election of 2022, Republicans regained control of Congress by just a handful of seats — meaning that the same internal GOP divisions that bedeviled the...

The New York Times has hired top Axios national political reporter Jonathan Swan, who won an Emmy for his 2020 interview with then-President Donald Trump.
Swan will start out covering Capitol Hill, “where he will focus on the Republican party and its fragile coalition in Congress,” according to a memo from politics editor David Halbfinger and Washington Bureau chief Elisabeth Bumiller. Swan then will join the politics team next summer.
Halbfinger and Bumiller called Swan “one of the biggest news breakers and best-sourced reporters in Washington.” During the Trump administration, when many reporters landed non-stop scoops from the leaky administration, Swan’s exclusives stood out for their accuracy. His interview with Trump aired on Axios on HBO.
“Even if you have never met Jonathan, you know his stories. He first reported that Trump would recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, that the U.S. would pull out of the Paris climate deal,...

Update, 3:10 Pm: Donald Trump groused that the “no longer great” New York Post and The Wall Street Journal are “all in” for Ron DeSantis, his potential rival for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.
Trump also bashed DeSantis, labeling him as “Ron DeSanctimonious” and as an “average Republican Governor with great Public Relations.”
“Ron came to me in desperate shape in 2017—he was politically dead, losing in a landslide to a very good Agriculture Commissioner, Adam Putnam, who was loaded up with cash and great poll numbers,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Ron had low approval, bad polls, and no money, but he said that if I would Endorse him, he could win. I didn’t know Adam so I said, “Let’s give it a shot, Ron.” When I Endorsed it was as though, to use a bad term, a nuclear weapon went off.”

When Rep. Steve Scalise (R. La.) was shot at a congressional baseball practice in 2017, then Speaker Paul Ryan stood on the House floor to insist — to bipartisan applause — that “an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.” Nancy Pelosi took her turn at the dais to put partisanship aside and insist: “I identify myself with the remarks of the Speaker.”

Exclusive: Having rallied in recent months against censorship-advocating Republican politicians and the loss of abortion rights in America, Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider is going back to the past to spotlight our potential future.
The heavy metal lead singer has teamed with Magilla Entertainment for a documentary series about the efforts of Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource Center 37 years ago to excise so-called obscene music. Confounding all expectations, Snider appeared with Frank Zappa and John Denver before a Senate committee in 1985 and proved a compelling and insightful advocate for freedom of expression and creative license.
“To be in the crosshairs of this bipartisan attack on free speech caught me completely off guard,” Snider told Deadline. “All of my rock and roll dreams were finally coming true, and the Pmrc was trying to shut me up,” the “We’re Not Gonna Take It” singer added of the heyday of hair metal.

Former President Donald Trump took to his now-preferred social media platform, TruthSocial, Monday morning to lambast “Fox & Friends” over what he perceived to be a misrepresentation of poll numbers.
Trump accused the three-hour news show – hosted by Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade and Ainsley Earhardt – of “botching” his poll numbers “no doubt on purpose” as they discussed the Turning Point USA conference. A poll conducted at the Republican-led conference showed 79 support of Trump in the crowd, which wasn’t quite to the former president’s liking. Building off the claim that the numbers were botched, Trump didn’t pull any punches when it came to his overall feelings about the morning news show, which he called “terrible.”

Near the end of Rage Against the Machine’s first concert in 11 years, frontman Zack de la Rocha walked to the tip of the stage, squinted his eyes shut, and roared out the “fuck you I won’t do as you tell me” climax of “Killing In The Name” as roughly 30,000 fans screamed along in unison, several of them crowd surfing right at his feet despite looking about 20 years too old for such an activity.

Mitt Romney likes to say he won't "apologize" for his success in business. But what he never says is "thank you" – to the American people – for the federal bailout of Bain & Company that made so much of his outsize wealth possible.
According to the candidate's mythology, Romney took leave of his duties at the private equity firm Bain Capital in 1990 and rode in on a white horse to lead a swift restructuring of Bain & Company, preventing the collapse of the consulting firm where his career began. When The Boston Globe...
