The Podcast Academy, a group of 1,000-plus industry creators and executives, awarded Campside Media and Sony Music Entertainment’s Chameleon: Wild Boys with the top honor at this year’s 2023 Ambie Awards.
Wild Boys, which serves as the third season of Campside’s Chameleon series, uncovers the story of two young men who claimed to have been raised in the wilderness in British Columbia and proceeded to fool a small town. The eight-part series was led by Sam Mullins with producer Abukar Adan, senior producer Ashleyanne Krigbaum, editor Karen Duffin and ep Matthew Shaer.
“I had nothing happening in my career. I had two young kids, I was working in a taco restaurant, and I never made a podcast before. And Campside deserves so much credit because I cold-emailed these guys, and they just believed in the story, and they believed in me, and they changed my life, and I’ll never forget it,...

Just as film and TV have the Oscars and the Emmys, The Podcast Academy is positioning the Ambies to become the event of the year for the podcast industry as well as the newest fixture of Hollywood awards season, complete with shiny statuettes and a swanky ceremony that, for at least one evening, compels podcasters to dress for the camera.
Hosted by Larry Wilmore, the annual event’s third edition is taking place March 7 at the Westgate Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The company to beat will be Audible, which received a total of 19 nominations across the 26 Ambies categories, including several nods for podcast of the year (see below).
The Podcast Academy received a record 1,700 submissions this year, which were narrowed down by a blue-ribbon panel of judges — who apply every year to be part of the panel — to determine the nominees in each category. From there, voting opened up...

Titles like Mike Cheslik's "Hundreds of Beavers" are why film festival veterans urge anyone listening to watch as many obscure titles as possible. Outside festival walls, a microbudget black-and-white, almost-no-dialogue 19th-century tale about an American fur trapper versus [checks notes] hundreds of beavers is the hardest of sells. But at a festival like Austin's Fantastic Fest, while sharing theaters with other adventurous moviegoing weirdos who want to see what gems programmers sneak into daily schedules? "Hundreds of Beavers" almost feels commonplace, blending historically inaccurate pioneer struggles with multiple comedy styles that never try to sell their actors in head-to-toe furry costumes as anything more than humans in woodland critter clothing.

Everything old is new again. No, really. Everything old is new again today. The recent passing of Rik Mayall led to legions of fans hitting up Netflix and Youtube to relive the late comedian’s greatest moments. And while the ground-breaking 80s alternative comedy opus The Young Ones and his turn as Lord Flashheart in Blackadder seemed to be the most quoted on social media, it felt like Bottom, the grisly, profane flatshare comedy Mayall and long time collaborator Ade Edmondson made in the early 90s, was left out of the conversation. Which is a shame, because it might just be their masterpiece.
It’s kind of easy to see how Bottom got forgotten. The Young Ones was capital-i Important, not only in terms of breaking alternative comedy into the mainstream, but also as being as much a time capsule of the...

I feel sorry for you, you zeros, you nobodies. What's going to live on after you die? Nothing, that's what!
This house will become a shrine! And punks and skins and Rastas will all gather round and all hold their hands in sorrow for their fallen leader! And all the grown-ups will say, 'But why are the kids crying?' And the kids will say, 'Haven't you heard? Rick is dead! The People's Poet is dead!'
And then one particularly sensitive and articulate teenager will say, 'Why kids, do you understand nothing? How can Rick be dead when we still have his poems?'.

The Crimson Horror
by Mark Gatiss
Directed by Saul Metzstein
People are turning up dead in the canal in Victorian Yorkshire, their bodies in varied states of petrifaction and their skin a lobster red. A woman is establishing her own ark on dry land, planning to survive the next torrent, not of rain, but of poison.
Mark Gatiss balances comedy and horror with a deft hand, being given the reins on the investigating Silurian and her companions. This may be the closest we ever get to a completely solo Vastra and Jenny adventure,...

It’s all fun and games until someone loses a…well, anyway.
This week, as a run-up to the season premiere of Doctor Who, a mini web-series titled “Pond Life”, intended to share a look at the Ponds’ home life in between visits by The Doctor. It was four episodes of entertaining fun, right up until the moment Steven Moffat and writer Chris Chibnall seized our hearts, turned them sideways, and made a tasty broth from our tears.
Each episode summarizes a month between April and August, leading into the events of the first episode, Asylum of the Daleks. All five episodes of “Pond Life” are available on the BBC YouTube channel, mirrored on numerous websites, and is written into the sullen expressions of Who-fen everywhere. Take a look, then we’ll discuss:

Here's a bit of fun to warm the hearts of Doctor Who fans. Having read last week's interview with Sylvester McCoy, Rob Ritchie was kind enough to send us this pic of the great man recreating his most famous role (at least until the first Hobbit movie comes out) for a new imagining of the 1995 straight-to-video release Downtime...

Original director Christopher Barry could not include The Doctor as a character for the original release due to rights issues, but this seems to be getting remedied now for a revised version of the tale, which featured the late Nicholas Courtney as The Brig, Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith and Deborah Watling as Victoria Waterfield.
We're assured by Sylvester McCoy that the rather scruffy-looking table in the picture will end up CGI'd into the Tardis centre console, with suitable background dropped into where the green screen currently is.

So it's parte The Seconde of the dreaded Trial Of A Time Lord, and matters are not improving. In fact, the chances of The Doctor getting off scott free with just a slap on the wrist are about as strong as a train timetable running on time in the middle of a snow storm.
The Valeyard's decided to up his game considerably with his most damning evidence yet. In other words, it's Philip Martin's second contribution to the show, which also goes by the name of Mindwarp. The story's a sort of loose sequel to his Vengeance On Varos – not only does it boast the return of slimy Sil, the action takes place on the gurgling one's home planet of Thoros Beta.
So having got back from my local optician with a complementary supply of eye drops, how does Mindwarp fare in the much debated season 23? It's a story...

The UK's Absolutely Fabulous TV show has been seen throughout the world and remains very popular with adults of all ages. There have been several attempts at recreating the bawdy series in the Us but the projects have all ended up stalling. Now, it looks like the time may actually be right.
First airing from 1992 to 1996, Absolutely Fabulous centers around Edina Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley), a pair of immature, chain-smoking, substance-abusing, fashion-obsessed ladies of London. Edina's daughter, "Saffy" (Julia Sawalha), doesn't approve of the excesses which provides plenty of conflict. June Whitfield plays Edna's good-natured mother and Jane Horrocks plays Bubble, Edna's inept personal assistant. Others in the cast include Helen Lederer, Harriet Thorpe, Naoko Mori, Christopher Malcolm, Christopher Ryan, and Mo Gaffney. New episodes of Fabulous began running in 2001.
Fox has recently announced plans to create a Us version of Fabulous for the Fall 2009 schedule.
