There’s an infamous anecdote about a scientist who was presenting a lecture on how earth and other celestial bodies orbit around larger bodies. When he finished the lecture, an old lady supposedly stood up and claimed that the scientist was wrong because the world wasn’t floating in outer space but was in fact supported on the back of a giant turtle. When asked what was supporting the turtle, the old lady replied: “it’s turtles all the way down.”

Perhaps the smallest scale franchise in the business is the “I Love You” anthology of films. Each installment in what’s called the “Cities of Love” franchise looks at romantic stories centered in one town. Paris, je t’aime started it off, with New York, I Love You and Rio, I Love You coming next in line. Now, this week brings Berlin, I Love You to screens. Unfortunately, while the first two efforts had lots of charm and offered more good segments than bad, the inverse is true here. Too much of the story is easy to dismiss and forgettable. For the first time, you don’t ever get a sense of why this is a place to love, or why someone might fall in love there. This movie is, as mentioned above, the latest installment of the Cities of Love / “I Love You” anthology series. Obviously, it’s centered in Berlin,...

If you truly love Berlin, and belong to the film industry, chances are you’re there right now attending the Berlinale, where roughly 400 movies unspool over 11 days. The Berlin Film Festival takes place annually in early February, one of the least pleasant times of year to experience a city where, in the half dozen instances I’ve been, someone always apologizes for the weather — with its rain, sleet, and iced-over streets — and helpfully suggests, “You really should come back in summer.”
And so, this year, I have no regrets sitting out the festival, choosing instead to visit the city vicariously via “Berlin, I Love You,” the latest in the “Cities of Love” series that gave us “Paris, je t’aime” and similar stopovers in New York and Rio. If you’ve seen any of those movies, you know the drill: The producers pick a glamorous international metropolis and invite a...

It's hard to pull off a good supernatural thriller these days. Every possible angle has already been exploited hundreds of times. All you can hope for as a writer or director of this type of film is that your story is compelling and endearing enough to keep the audience's attention for 90 minutes to two hours. Filmmakers have to hope that the one or two "twist" or "surprise" endings they decide to utilize out of the five dozen already used will fit convincingly with the rest of the tale.
All that being said, Beyond has an uphill battle to fight from the very beginning. Add to the struggle the extremely unoriginal title of the film and you have something most consumers and renters will walk by without even giving a second glance. Although it isn't anything new, the movie does hold its own and delivers a little intrigue and entertainment.

We heard from the fine folks behind the WWII vampire project The Bleeding (not to be confused with Charlie Picerni’s direct-to-video action horror film that starred Michael Matthias, Vinnie Jones, Dmx, and Michael Madsen) a little while ago with an update and some fresh promo art for you. A new thriller is coming, and this time we’re here to talk about the upcoming movie titled Beyond from director Josef Rusnak (probably best known from The 13th Floor).

Another day, another horror remake. What’s scary is that I’m actually starting to get used to it. In fact, I wasn’t surprised at all to see the red band trailer for the re-imagining of Larry Cohen’s cult classic “It’s Alive” lurking suspiciously within my Inbox this morning. First Look is handling the film’s release, which, strangely enough, is bypassing theaters and going directly to DVD. This is never a good sign, though judging from the clip below, it’s probably the smart thing to do. Only time will tell if curiosity can sinks its claws deep enough into my tiny little brain for me to waste 90 minutes on this potential disaster. Who am I kidding — I’m going to watch it. Helmed by “The Thirteenth Floor” director Josef Rusnak, the film stars Bijou Phillips and James Murray as parents who must contend with their monstrously evil baby,...

Given we live in an age where darn near every horror movie hitting theaters is either a remake or a sequel, it’s kind of surprising to hear that a remake is bypassing theaters and going straight to DVD. Such is the case of the remake of Larry Cohen’s killer baby opus It’s Alive.
First Look Studios has announced an October 6th DVD release date for Josef Rusnak’s remake of It’s Alive starring Bijou Philips about a new mother slipping into madness to protect her newborn killer mutant baby.
No further DVD details are available at this time, but they should be forthcoming shortly.

Time for yet another remake of a movie you only vaguely remember -- if at all. It's one of the biggest successes of the mega-prolific Larry Cohen's career, but It's Alive Did come out in 1974, and that's, like, ancient to horror fans of a certain age. Yes, it's the movie about a homicidal infant, and sure, it already spawned two sequels of its own (It Lives Again in 1978 and Island of the Alive in 1987... so I guess this makes it high time for the remake route.
The new version stars Bijou Philips and is helmed by Josef Rusnak, he of The Thirteenth Floor and the recent Art of War 2. According to the IMDb, Larry Cohen is still on board as a screenwriter, but he may have had no involvement besides saying Ok and collecting a check. The release date (video, no doubt) on...

If you read on you'll find the Cannes Promo Trailer for It's Alive, the remake to the classic '80s horror film, which I first saw this past November at Afm. The Davies expecting a baby which turns out to be a monster with the nasty habit to kill when it's scared. And it's easily scared... Bijou Phillips (Hostel: Part II), James Murray and Raphael Coleman star in the Josef Rusnak directed remake, which looks pretty damn fun.

Some nifty period art direction isn't enough to merit a trek to "The Thirteenth Floor", an otherwise laughably inept hunk of sci-fi hokum looking to hook "The Matrix" crowd.
Fusing the latter picture's parallel universe schematic with aspects of "L.A. Confidential" and "The Truman Show", this presentation from Roland Emmerich's Centropolis Entertainment gets inextricably snagged in progressively preposterous plotting, vacuous dialogue and weak lead performances.
While "The Thirteenth Floor" might generate a little opening weekend cyber-geek curiosity, poor word-of-mouth will likely stall it in the boxoffice basement.
Inspired by the novel, "Simulacron-3" by Daniel F. Galouye, the picture actually starts off promisingly enough with Armin Mueller-Stahl's Hannon Fuller taking in the evening social scene in Los Angeles, circa 1937.
Or is he?
It turns out Fuller and his partner Douglas Hall (Craig Bierko) have actually created the convincing landscape on a computer chip on the 13th floor of a downtown L.A. office tower. But when Fuller turns up murdered and Hall awakens to discover a bloody shirt in his own laundry basket, this whole virtual reality business turns seriously real.
With a pesky detective (Dennis Haysbert) on his tail, Hall, determined to clear his name, takes a few risky trips back to his simulated city, only to encounter a Chinese boxful of existential roadblocks, not to mention the alluring but mysterious Jane (Gretchen Mol), who claims to be Fuller's daughter.
Although the storyline initially feels like "The Twilight Zone" episode that never was, it quickly devolves into hopelessly banal techno-babble. Director Josef Rusnak, who handled second unit work on Emmerich's "Godzilla", has an impressive eye for visual detail; his scripting, in collaboration with Ravel Centeno-Rodriguez, suffers from a verbal stiffness that has an English-as-a-second-language ring to it.
It doesn't make it easy for the actors, but while Haysbert, Vincent D'Onofrio (as a loopy technician and his slick virtual counterpart) and the always reliable Mueller-Stahl manage to give their characters some much-needed weight, the clenched-jawed Bierko and the vamp-eyed Mol flail helplessly. It's like watching the stunt doubles for Charlie Sheen and Penelope Ann Miller tackling a cold reading class.
That leaves any potential scenery-stealing to the scenery itself, and, thanks to some stand-out work from production designer Kirk M. Petruccelli and art director Frank Bollinger, the film succeeds admirably in its richly stylized recreations of 1930s Los Angeles captured to picture postcard perfection by cinematographer Wedigo von Schultzendorff.
By enhancing the likes of the exterior of the old Ambassador Hotel and the interior of the Queen Mary with a little clever set dressing and computer-generated touching-up, "The Thirteenth Floor", at least visually conveys the illusion of something greater than its reality, virtual or otherwise.
