Just as most young actors who headed to New York post World War II, Eva Marie Saint was a staple on live television. In fact, her first TV appearance was in 1947 in a production of “A Christmas Carol” starring John Carradine as Scrooge. Saint, who celebrates her 100th birthday on July 4, told me in a 2013 L.A. Times interview that she didn’t appear on screen in her first TV gig that same year on NBC’s “The Borden Show.” She was hired to simply supply applause off-camera and called her parents to tell them the good news. “After the show, they called me and mom said, ‘Honey, we just love the show, and Dad thinks he heard you applauding.”’
Doing live TV got the lithe blonde actress a lot of exposure. One time it was way too much exposure. Between 1950-52, Saint appeared as the daughter of a high-powered San...

Judy Balaban, the daughter of a longtime studio mogul who dated Montgomery Clift and Merv Griffin, married Tony Franciosa and served as one of Grace Kelly’s bridesmaids at her wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco, has died. She was 91.
Balaban died Thursday night in a hospital in Los Angeles, her friend, author and documentary filmmaker Cari Beauchamp, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Balaban was a champion for civil rights, serving on the board of directors for the ACLU of Southern California for decades.
In a 2010 piece for Vanity Fair that she and Beauchamp co-wrote, Balaban described using LSD (then legal) as a form of therapy in the early 1960s when her good friends Cary Grant and his third wife, Betsy Drake, were using it, too.
“What I had with Cary and Betsy was a kind of soul-baringness that the culture didn’t start to deal with until years later,” she says in the story.

Music is a powerful force that can serve many purposes and its strongest trait is the ability to bring people together. While a favorite record or a poignant lyric is often times what ushers a newcomer into the fold of a fanbase, it’s the interpersonal connections and the shared experiences that make that person a lifelong member.
For passionate music fans, that community is most strongly felt when it comes time to descend on a live show. “I love the music, but actually it’s the friendships I’ve...

The Academy Museum’s Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898-1971 is not to be missed. Not only does the exhibition celebrate Black representation in film, it serves as an important reminder and lesson about the contributions of Black filmmakers and stars to the world of cinema.
Opening Aug. 21, seven galleries make up the exhibit exploring Oscar Micheaux’s low-budget dramas in the silent-film era to the works of Melvin Van Peebles.
The exhibition also introduces audiences to stars largely unknown to mainstream moviegoers — Ralph Cooper, Clarence Brooks and Francine Everett — alongside iconic screen legends Paul Robeson, Josephine Baker, Harry Belafonte, Sidney Poitier and Lena Horne.
Poiter’s Oscar for “Lillies of the Field” is just one of the many artifacts on display in this historic exhibition. Alongside the award are tap shoes worn by the Nicholas Brothers and one of Louis Armstrong’s trumpets.

Years in the making! The glory of MGM on parade! Enough studio resources to film twenty pictures were expended on this paean to showman Florenz Ziegfeld. It’s really Metro Goldwyn Mayer’s Technicolor valentine to itself, showing off the studio’s enormous stable of musical talent, along with various of its comic performers. Arthur Freed and Louis B. Mayer’s notion of ‘something for everyone’ results in weird stack of grandiose musical numbers and mostly weak comedy. The biggest draw is the incredible color cinematography that peeks through in three or four jaw-droppingly elaborate musical spectacles. The picture is a workout to find the artistic limits of the Technicolor system.

It's no secret that most royal brides have a second wedding dress that they wear at either their regal reception or another event during their lavish wedding weekend. But, until now, we've never known that Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco wore a second gown — and it was pink! According to Good Housekeeping, Grace donned a light pink taffeta suit top and a matching tea-length skirt featuring a fitted bodice and a rounded collar for her civil wedding ceremony to Prince Rainier at Monaco's royal palace in April 1956. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) The two-piece ensemble was reportedly created by Helen Rose, a costume designer who also worked with Grace on four movies during her Hollywood acting career. Rose additionally designed the Princess' iconic long-sleeved wedding gown when the star tied the knot with Prince Rainier on April 18, 1956. Late last month, Hello! magazine similarly uncovered that Princess Diana also wore a second...

Image Source: Getty / Bettmann Fairy tales might not be real, but Grace Kelly came as close as a person can to truly living one. The Rear Window actress, who grew up in an affluent Philadelphia family, ended up leaving behind her booming Hollywood film career to marry a real-life royal, Prince Rainier III of Monaco, after a whirlwind year of courtship. So, how did Grace meet Prince Rainier, exactly? Well, there likely never would have been a connection between the two without the Cannes Film Festival. Ahead of the glamorous annual movie event in 1955, biographers have claimed that Prince Rainier was looking for an American wife specifically. Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis allegedly suggested he marry Marilyn Monroe, who was apparently keen on the match herself, but the prince rejected the idea since he didn't find her public image dignified enough for his family (though it has never been confirmed...

Sixty-one years ago today, Grace Kelly, then 26, wed Monaco’s Prince Rainier in what remains one of the most fairytale weddings of all time.
The glamorous royal affair was held on April 18, 1956. Over 600 guests attended the nuptials, including Cary Grant, Aristotle Onassis, Ava Gardner, Gloria Swanson and Conrad Hilton.

As one of the biggest Hollywood stars of her era, Princess Grace - before her wedding, she was known around the world as Rear Window star Grace Kelly - wasn't a typical royal bride. And she didn't accessorize like one either. Instead of a tiara, Princess Grace instead wore a beaded Juliet cap with an attached veil for her spectacular wedding to Monaco's Prince Rainier on April 18, 1956. Atop the cap was a layer of lace covered in tiny pearls along with flowers. While it wasn't actually a diamond-covered tiara, the piece was crown-like in appearance, with the pearls and flowers...

Honorary Award: Gloria Swanson, Rita Hayworth among dozens of women bypassed by the Academy (photo: Honorary Award non-winner Gloria Swanson in 'Sunset Blvd.') (See previous post: "Honorary Oscars: Doris Day, Danielle Darrieux Snubbed.") Part three of this four-part article about the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Honorary Award bypassing women basically consists of a long, long — and for the most part quite prestigious — list of deceased women who, some way or other, left their mark on the film world. Some of the names found below are still well known; others were huge in their day, but are now all but forgotten. Yet, just because most people (and the media) suffer from long-term — and even medium-term — memory loss, that doesn't mean these women were any less deserving of an Honorary Oscar. So, among the distinguished female film professionals in Hollywood and elsewhere who have passed away without...

For months, insiders speculated whether Catherine Middleton would follow the lead of her betrothed's mother, Princess Diana, when choosing her wedding gown. But could her inspiration have come from a different royal? While 20-year-old Diana chose a voluminous taffeta Elizabeth Emanuel gown marked by its youthful ruffles and frills - not to mention 25 ft. train - 29-year-old Middleton took a sophisticated approach in her Alexander McQueen dress designed by creative director Sarah Burton, which some experts assert mirrors the iconic Helen Rose gown that Grace Kelly wore for her 1956 marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco. Hollywood screen legend Elizabeth Taylor made her mark on the screen in the 1950s as one of the last of the great silver-screen superstars of the studio era. From "Cleopatra" to "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," the English-born actress captivated with her onscreen intensity and beauty, even as her chaotic off-screen love life became a staple of tabloid coverage.
With Taylor's passing on Wednesday (March 23) at the age of 79, the world has lost not only a great movie siren, but also a towering pop-culture figure whose influence ran well beyond her acting to philanthropy, fashion and American mores.
Since her early days as an actress, Taylor had a striking look that became a model for women in the 1960s.

Last week Clothes on Film visited the Grace Kelly: Style Icon exhibition at London’s V&A museum. This is what we found out.
Grace Kelly is mostly known for her ‘blossoming flower’, 50’s New Look dresses with tiny waists and huge, poufy skirts. Yet these only represent one period in her life, essentially the big movie star years 1954-56 and early marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco. There was far more to Grace Kelly’s enduring chic than silk organza, although two constants did remain throughout: clean, simple. She rarely deviated from this style.
That the Victoria and Albert museum (that’s the V&A in case you were unsure) have recognised her life was not the fairytale existence it is sometimes made out to be makes for a credible exhibition. It may not be as extensive as you would hope and there is no wedding outfit...

The Victoria and Albert Museum, London is hosting an exhibition of dresses and accessories once belonging to Grace Kelly. You have from now until 26th September to get there and gaze.
There are a multitude of Kelly’s finest and most memorable outfits on display. Some will look less than pristine as Princess Grace of Monaco was not averse to wearing garments and handbags until long past their best. A classier contrast to modern celebrities who sport an item once before consigning it to the bin marked ‘Seen’ and splashing out on another.
Author and all round society man Ian Fleming was the same in this respect. He apparently used to keep his clothes on rotation until friends suggested he take the buttons back to his tailor and have a new suit sewn around them.

The chemistry of being a movie star is about maintaining the perfect temperature. From the screen, you need to radiate enough heat to keep the audience's pulses racing, to invite a little fantasy, yet maintain enough coolness to remind them that a fantasy is all it is. Too much heat and they think you're cheap; too little and they don't look long enough to care. The trick is to look approachable without being available.
