Whether it’s Michel Gondry’s Mood Indigo, Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk, The Hundred-Foot Journey, Anthropoid, The Promise, or last year’s Fresh, chances are you’ve seen Charlotte Le Bon’s work as an actor. She’s now helmed her feature with Falcon Lake, which premiered at Cannes Film Festival and will now arrive in theaters next month from Yellow Veil Pictures.

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Matt says hell naw to nature thanks to "Backcountry.")
In honor of "Cocaine Bear," let's look back on a mid-2010s wildlife horror film that shows what bears are capable of without drug enhancements. Humans love to connect with nature, pitching tents and roughing it deep within forestation, but we forget we're visitors to occupied territories. Deers might flee in fear, rabbits might scamper away, but bears are better experienced on your movie screens as drug smuggler punishers. Movies like "Backcountry" remind us what makes an animal wild, especially bears who can end some lives with a few paw swipes.
Adam MacDonald does well to represent the foolishness of campers who consider themselves outdoorsy just because they bought some all-weather equipment.

Camping has a way of making people act unlike themselves. Once the Great Outdoors come into view, power dynamics can shift and that usual sense of self-preservation may or may no longer be intact. That’s certainly what happened when one couple went camping in Backcountry, a film inspired by a 2005 incident in Missinaibi Provincial Park. After arriving at their destination one fateful weekend, the protagonists of this 2014 Canadian horror story gradually succumb to both personal stressors and their merciless surroundings.
In Backcountry, Alex (Jeff Roop) was excited to show girlfriend Jenn (Missy Peregrym) Blackfoot Trail until they’re told the area is closed off for the season. Alex, who had already refused to take a map from the park ranger (Nicholas Campbell), doesn’t verbally state his intentions, but they’re not hard to figure out. So in under two minutes, director Adam MacDonald ensures the audience that this...

Backcountry is the Candy Crush of the horror movie genre: it’s a well executed, well directed contemporary horror film, that’s enjoyable and re-watchable despite its flaws.
Backcountry (also known as Blackfoot Trail) is the debut feature film from the talented Adam MacDonald, best known for his years of work as a television actor. The film tells the story of a couple who leave the comforts of city life to venture deep into the Canadian hinterlands. However, what they find on their journey challenges both their relationship and their very lives.
Featuring a mostly Canadian cast and crew, writer and director MacDonald crafts a conventional horror film that’s quite good for a directorial debut. Considering that Macdonald shot Backcountry in only a few weeks and on a shoestring budget, it excels technically, is easy to follow, and tells...

A summer camping trip for a little R&R sounds great right about now, doesn’t it? You may be putting that tent back into storage and second-guessing your next trip to the great outdoors after checking out the brand new thriller Backcountry, in theatres Friday.
The movie stars Missy Peregrym of “Rookie Blue” and Jeff Roop as a young couple who take a break from big city life to go on a backwoods hiking trip. With the distractions of modern technology aside, the duo’s quest for peace in the wilderness suddenly looks like a very bad idea when they find themselves lost in the territory of a blood-thirsty black bear with a creepy stranger on their tail.
The horror from writer-director Adam MacDonald (also from “Rookie Blue”) made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and is finally making its way into theatres, just as summer is winding down.

No matter what you walk away thinking of writer/director Adam MacDonald's feature directorial debut Backcountry, you are sure to have been chilled by his menacing use of sound as a couple find themselves lost in the Canadian wilderness. For the sake of complete transparency, I watched the film in a manner MacDonald would most likely frown upon -- on my computer via a screener link -- but with a pair of headphones cranked up I have to admit the salivary grumble of a hungry bear outside the couple's tent, separated by only a thin layer of nylon, was incredibly unsettling. In fact, sound plays a massive role throughout the film to the point a helicopter is heard but not seen, though you have no doubt it was actually there. Where Backcountry struggles, however, is in its story as it stretches, and stretches, and stretches to meet its 92 minute running time.

The horror genre is filled with great movies about animals turning against humans — from the creepy (Arachnophobia) to the campy (Anaconda) to the artistic (Razorback) to the gory (Savage Harvest) to the awesome (Deep Blue Sea) — but the number of legitimately terrifying examples can be counted on one two-fingered hand. There’s Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, Lewis Teague’s Cujo and… that’s it right? Seriously, I can’t think of any other genuinely scary movies about animal attacks. That changes with the release of Adam MacDonald‘s Backcountry. Alex (Jeff Roop) and Jenn (Missy Peregrym) are heading into the woods for a weekend getaway that they hope will help bring them closer together. Their relationship has been a bit rocky of late, and while she’s uninterested in the great outdoors he spent his childhood roaming the forest and feels confident she’ll come to appreciate the beauty of the park’s more memorable spots too...

Urbanite anxiety over the big, bad woods is stoked yet again by Backcountry, an ostensibly based-on-real-events tale in which camping vet Alex (Jeff Roop) takes his lawyer girlfriend, Jenn (Missy Peregrym), into the Canadian wilderness, where their every imaginable fear comes true. No sooner have the happy couple begun their hike than they're getting lost, injuring themselves, screaming at each other, and having alarming run-ins with a menacing stranger (Eric Balfour) and a hungry black bear — all problems that are compounded by the fact that (plot contrivance alert!) arrogant Alex refused to bring along a map or workaholic Jenn's cellphone. Writer-director Adam MacDonald's direction creates an ominous sense of rural-nowhere isolation, and his script avoid...

"We don't have a map, we don't have a cell phone. We are in the middle of nowhere." We're back with another trailer round-up, this time highlighting one couple's hellish hike in Backcountry, the Lovecraftian love of Spring, and the blood-splattered bubble-gum sweetness of Fox's Scream Queens TV series.

It's man vs. nature in this trailer for Backcountry, a film based on an intense true story of the worst camping trip of all time. The story follows a young couple as they leave their busy big city lives behind to embark on a camping trip, which quickly turns into a tale of survival as they face the darkest side of nature: a man-eating bear.
The movie was written and directed by Adam MacDonald, and it stars Missy Peregrym and Jeff Roop. It screened at Tiff and received a lot of positive feedback. This is a solid trailer, and it looks like the kind of film that I would enjoy watching. It's always fun to watch other people go through a complete and utterly miserable experience.
The film will get a limited released in theaters on March 20th. Now...who wants to go camping!?

Stephen Colbert has always had an inherent fear of bears (at least until he made peace with them before the end of his show), so the latest man vs. nature thriller Backcountry would probably be the most terrifying thing next to encountering a real bear. The film played at Tiff to some pretty solid reviews, and now it's poised to hit limited theaters this spring. The thriller follows Missy Peregrym and Jeff Roop as a couple who end up being terrorized by a man-eating bear while on a romantic camping trip. It's clearly a monster tale on the scale of Jaws or Jurassic Park, and if you're timid about camping this won't help. Watch below! By now the conceit of an urban couple heading to the wilderness for a weekend getaway is old hat but you have to hand it to a director who takes that familiar story and manages to add a new twist that makes it stand out. Such is the case with Adam MacDonald's Backcountry.
Missy Peregrym and Jeff Roop star as Jenn and Alex, apparently happy city dwellers who head out of the city for a weekend of camping adventure. The pair arrive to discover that the trail Alex wanted to share with his girlfriend is closed for the season but Alex figures he knows better than the park ranger and he heads along the trail anyways. As expected, the pair get lost in the woods and though they don't have a map or a working phone, they also aren't completely desolate: Alex is sure he has a general idea...

For a few months now we've been hearing good things about actor-turned-director Adam MacDonald's feature film debut Backcountry and now we have our first look at the thriller that drops an urban couple into the woods where they get lost in the territory of a black bear. Yes, it's man vs. nature but in this case, with the added threat of a stranger who may or may not be following them.
MacDonald's debut stars Jeff Roop and Missy Peregrym as the city couple and Eric Balfour as the mysterious stranger and from the looks of this trailer, Backcountry is going to deliver some great thrills. We'll be all over it when the movie makes its Western Canadian premiere at the Whistler Film Festival in a few weeks.
No release information yet but stay tuned for details.

As Jaws once cleared tourist-filled beaches thanks to a Great White threat, Backcountry is certain to make outdoorsy adventurers re-think their next wilderness excursion. Yes, Backcountry is the camping equivalent to Jaws, turning a natural woodland predator into a horrific killing machine with more ferocity than the wildest creatures Hollywood has ever dreamed up.
While bear encounters probably don’t turn into a survivalist’s nightmare all that often, filmmaker Adam MacDonald channels every camper’s worst-case-scenario into a gritty, gory, tremendously tense vacation-from-hell genre experiment that puts animal attack movies back on the map. I assumed no bear-centric horror movie would top the opening scene of André Szöts’ never-completed Grizzly 2: The Predator (George Clooney, Laura Dern, Charlie Sheen – tell me you’ve seen this??), but Backcountry asserts its dominance by once again reminding humanity that Mother Nature’s untamed domain can never be accounted for – a primal realization...

While Xavier Dolan and David Cronenberg tend to grab the headlines when it comes to the homegrown talent featured at Tiff, there are plenty of other Canadian filmmakers hoping an appearance at the fest will give them a boost. And writer/director Adam MacDonald is aiming for his feature debut "Backcountry" to put him on the map. Starring Missy Peregrym, Jeff Roop, Eric Balfour and Nicholas Campbell, the thriller uses Canada's beautiful landscape to spin a gritty, pulse-pounding tale. The story follows a young couple, Jenn and Alex, who retreat to the woods for a break from big city life. But things take a turn when they encounter Brad, a strange man on his own, and what soon follows will test the lovers far more than they bargained for. In this exclusive clip, you can feel the tension in the air between Jenn, Alex and Eric. "Backcountry" has its final screening at Tiff tonight.

The Canadian wilderness is no place to get lost. That becomes apparent in "Backcountry," a tense thriller premiering at the Toronto Film Festival on September 8. Based on a true story, the movie revolves around Alex (Jeff Roop) and Jenn (Missy Peregrym), a young couple who become lost while camping. To make matters worse, they stumble into bear territory. As the tension mounts and their already fragile relationship begins to crack even more under the pressure, the two must somehow keep their wits about them in order to survive.
Back in November, 2013, Peregrym, Roop and writer/director Adam MacDonald took a much-needed break from shooting "Backcountry" before heading to Vancouver to complete production. The trio gathered in Toronto's Liberty Village to discuss the great outdoors, character friction and creating "the shower scene of bear attacks."
Moviefone Canada: You want "Backcountry" to relate to people. What's scary about being lost in the woods?...

See, now, this is why I'm hesitant about visiting Canada and heading into some beautiful woods there, because I'm afraid something like the events depicted in Backcountry will happen to me. Set to enjoy its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday, September 8, Backcountry is based on a true story. According to the official synopsis: A bear attack thriller reminiscent of true-life survival stories like 127 Hours and gritty animal encounter thrillers like The Grey, Backcountry follows an urban couple who embark on a camping trip in the Canadian backcountry. Alex (Jeff Roop) is a seasoned outdoorsman while Jenn (Missy Peregrym), a corporate lawyer, is not. After getting hopelessly lost in the wilderness, and without food or water, the couple struggles...

Mac notices a pickpocket whom he watches and then chases. Jo can't believe he just did that. She then calls the window display amazing, agreed by the pickpocket, whom she wasn't talking to. Mac still is disinterested until he sees a Db in the display. Mac: "You see why I hate shopping." They process the shop window.
