There’s a last-minute change brewing at “60 Minutes.”
When the venerable CBS newsmagazine launches its 55th season this Sunday, viewers may notice a twist at the end of the hour. The show is debuting a new end segment, something that its top producer hopes will resonate with crowds as much as previous codas like “Point/Counterpoint” or the musings of Andy Rooney did in their respective eras.
“We have tried different things to fill the space, and they felt a little unsatisfying,” executive producer Bill Owens tells Variety. “There wasn’t a consistency to it. I ended up giving that time back to the stories and the correspondents, so they would each have 20 to 30 seconds more. They were all very happy to have that time, but it felt like something was missing.”

Saturday Am Update: The bowels of the summer box office have been reached with Sony’s new C CinemaScore horror movie The Invitation leading with 6M-7M at 3,114 theaters. Like the late Andy Rooney, I get a lot of mail from sources, but in this instance it’s about why it’s important to be gentle when covering the box office. We’re still in the pandemic, we’re not back yet, it’s not good for our business to be nasty, blah blah blah. However, simply putting random movies in theaters without any great P&a spend doesn’t do the box office, or exhibitors any favors. This weekend will rank as the lowest grossing weekend to date of summer with an estimated 54M for all titles (some even have it lower). If it makes anyone feel better, it’s not the worst weekend of the year. That belongs to Jan.

Who knew when the year began that a sequel to a 36-year-old movie starring its 60-year-old actor who headlined the original would be the box office champ so far this year? But “Top Gun: Maverick” starring Tom Cruise, which was released Aug. 23 on digital formats while still flying high in theaters is not only the No. 1 film of the year with a staggering haul of 683.4 million domestically and 720 million overseas. And the acclaimed film didn’t even play in China or Russia. “Top Gun: Maverick” is also the biggest film of Cruise’s career which began in 1981 with Franco Zeffirelli’s “Endless Love.”
And with the digital release, let’s relive 1986, the year we first felt the need for speed and flew into the danger zone. The year the original “Top Gun” took our breath away.

Rock drummers used to become legends by pounding out epic arena solos. These days, players are just as likely to become famous by uploading covers of beloved songs to YouTube or Instagram, which can rack up huge numbers. When it comes to going viral, flair, originality, and a grabby conceptual hook can matter more than chops. Here are four online drummers who rose to the top.

Lewis Black up close isn’t nearly as deranged as those who know him only from his guest rants on The Daily Show might have supposed. We were used to seeing him at a desk, suit rumpled and tie askew, having a clamorous nervous breakdown over this or that. Lewis Black is the Andy Rooney of the Jon Stewart set, griping and grimacing for our amusement as the veins in his neck pulse like earthworms after a rain. But on the stage of Broadway’s Marquis Theatre on Monday…...

Adam Levine was on "The Tonight Show" with Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night, showing off his imitation skills in a fun game called "Wheel of Musical Impressions." Adam actually does a slick version of Frank Sinatra singing "Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes." Jimmy's Bob Dylan singing "Rude" is pretty classic. Adam really struggled at the start of his Michael Jackson-does- "Sesame Street" impression, but once he got it, he nailed it. Adam also talked to Jimmy about how he tried to help Gwen Stefani pronounce "Colbert" at the Emmys. According to the search I just completed 17 seconds ago, Google defines the word "kinky" as "remove your safe search." Wait, sorry, that's not right. One second.
According to the search I just completed 48 seconds ago, Google (and then Wikipedia) defines the word "kinky" as "a term used to refer to an intelligent and playful usage of sexual concepts which are overt, accentuated, unambiguously expressive of sexuality."
Seems excessive, no? For the purpose of this list, we're pretty much defining "kinky" as "Hey, look, a hot sex scene." [SFX: Whip crack] Like you're going to complain. Especially with Joseph Gordon-Levitt's "Don Jon" coming out this week.
Here now are the 10, er, "kinkiest" sex scenes in movie history, generally embedded from sketchier websites than Youtube. And, yeah, you probably shouldn't watch any of these videos at work unless you want to get fired or start a really weird Nsfw-themed relationship with your boss.

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks have produced two incredible World War II series on HBO--Band of Brothers and The Pacific. We've heard a third WWII series would eventually get made, and it's been revealed that they've acquired the rights to the book Masters Of The Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought The Air War Against Nazi Germany, written by Donald L. Miller. I was hoping that the next chapter in their WWII series would revolve around the aerial battles! It's so cool that it's actually going to happen! This is sure to make a great edition to this series. It sounds like it's going to be incredibly intense. Check out a detailed description from the book below and let us know if you're excited for this next chapter!
Masters of the Air is the deeply personal story of the American bomber boys in World War II who brought the war to Hitler's doorstep.

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are at it again. The dynamic duo will reunite for the millionth time to produce another WWII miniseries for HBO titled Masters of the Air. Having already produced Band of Brothers and The Pacific for the network, you can see why we would be excited about this news.
Set to explore the “aerial wars of the men known as the “Mighty Eighth,” the miniseries will be based on Donald L. Miller’s novel of the same name. We don’t know too much about it just yet, but we do know that Justified creator Graham Yost will write a couple episodes, as he did with Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
Given the success of Hanks and Spielberg’s previous efforts with HBO, it’s easy to see why this miniseries is being given the go ahead. Band of Brothers is still one of the...

This is one of those fascinatingly debates that is so complicated, I’m going to count myself among the undecided voters, especially since I haven’t seen Cloud Atlas yet. If you simply showed me stills of Caucasian actors Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess and James D’Arcy playing Asian characters, yes, I immediately side with the Media Action Network for Asian Americans. The group issued a statement condemning the film for A) not casting Asians in those roles, and B) simply slanting the eyes of said actors and thinking that counts as making them look Asian. That’s some messed up Andy Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffanys ish. What’s more, directors Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer were sensitive enough not to put any actors in blackface in the movie but seemed to think it was Ok to do yellowface. Insensitive, racist, enough said.

Showtime’s freshman drama Homeland unseated Mad Men in the best drama series during the 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Sunday on ABC. Actors Damian Lewis and Claire Danes, along with drama’s writers, confirmed pundit predictions by winning the gold for starring in Showtime’s year-old thriller that (conveniently!) returns for its second season next Sunday. But the night’s biggest surprise occurred when the domestic terrorist drama triumphed over AMC’s perennial winner Mad Men as well as last year’s period favorite, Downton Abbey, in the series category.

That was the provocative question three newscasters debated this morning at the cable industry’s annual convention on the eve of what MSNBC‘s Chris Matthews predicted will be “the most exciting political season we’ve ever had” — in part because of the growing importance of cable news. As you might imagine, the boisterous host of Hardball With Chris Matthews sucked up most of the oxygen in the Cable Show panel that also included CNN‘s John King and Univision‘s Maria Elena Salinas. She lamented that people “now have designer news. They want to listen to people they agree with.” That’s dangerous, she says, because “they don’t know the difference between a news person and a commentator.” King says that while “there’s nothing wrong with advocacy journalism, there’s nothing wrong with objective journalism, too.” But Matthews says viewers understand what they’re watching. In the news game they were called The Wrinklies, the old men who for years dominated TV news at 60 Minutes. Now they’re dying off. Don Hewitt, Ed Bradley, Andy Rooney — and, this past weekend, Mike Wallace. Obituaries rightly celebrate these men’s substantial accomplishments. Wallace and his colleagues adapted the news documentary formula to make it engaging for TV viewers, and kept them coming back week after week. But if newscasters want to celebrate that legacy, then they need to stop emulating the reporting style that the 60 Minutes team developed 44 years ago and find different ways to make investigative reporting relevant and sustainable. Wallace became famous by putting bullies in the hot seat, casting himself as a crusader for common sense and fair play in a world filled with villains and victims. He did this most memorably with ambush interviews, capturing defiant subjects when they had nowhere to hide.

Mike Wallace, the legendary newsman who hosted 60 Minutes for nearly half a century and interviewed some of the most high-profile subjects of his day, has died, CBS reports. He was 93. One of broadcast television's fiercest, most aggressive interviewers, Wallace was one of the founding hosts of 60 Minutes, television's most popular newsmagazine show. Bob Scheiffer, host of CBS News's Face the Nation said Wallace died following a long illness Saturday night in New Haven, Connecticut, surrounded by family, the New York Times reports. Wallace underwent triple heart-bypass surgery in 2008, a procedure that doctors called "a great success." The CBS News family lost another veteran broadcaster in November when Andy Rooney died at age 92. In an essay for CBS, 60 Minutes colleague Morely Safer wrote that Wallace "took to heart the old reporter's pledge to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. He characterized himself as 'nosy and insistent.' " "So insistent, there were very few 20th century icons who didn't submit to a Mike Wallace interview. He lectured Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, on corruption. He lectured Yassir Arafat on violence," wrote Safer. Wallace - who traveled alongside Martin Luther King, Jr., and also interviewed Malcolm X during his illustrious career - retired in 2006, but occasionally returned to the show to interview high-profile subjects like Mitt Romney, Jack Kevorkian and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He told reporters late in his life that if he could write his own epigraph, it would read, "Tough But Fair."...

It sure is rewarding as a TV viewer when someone you're invested in a show's growth. | permalink
In an extremely meta moment, Tracy uttered those words about Liz on the St. Patrick's Day special he was hosting with Jenna. Yes, Liz Lemon did depict growth in 30 Rock's "St. Patrick's Day," but as I've noted before, that's not a necessity for a comedy.
There are those sitcom that need to fuse the funny with character development in order to be successful - take Parks and Recreation or Modern Family, for example - but 30 Rock is so out there and obviously after as many jokes as it can muster that the addition of growth seems unnecessary.
That's not to say that it wasn't welcome here, especially if it meant the return of Dennis Duffy! There is plenty of Dean Winters to go around, as those All State commercials never stop, but he's...

2011 was quite an interesting year in the world of celebrity as it was really all about the good… Oprah Winfrey, the bad… Kim Kardashian, and the ugly… Charlie Sheen. In no particular order, let’s take a look back these moments as well as a few in between.
Shortly after launching her own network, Own, Oprah Winfrey ended The Oprah Winfrey Show after 25 seasons. With that came some of the most spectacular episodes of the series. The conclusion of Oprah’s show but launch of her network made for one of the most bittersweet moments of the year. Here’s to hoping Own becomes just as successful.
Not too long before the final episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show aired, The Royal Wedding took over everyone’s television screens and brought a fairy tale to life. Need I say more? Also married in 2011 were Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed, Michael Vartan,...

The good news is, the Christmas gift list is shorter this year.
The bad news is, the Christmas gift list is shorter this year.
But enough gloom, for ‘tis the season to be jolly, ‘tis it not?
And judging from the number of cars in the mall parking lot, the season ‘tis jollier’n hell. Don’t these shoppers know about the mess the economy’s in?
Did I mention fa la la la la la?
And now a quick trip into the Chamber of Curmudgeons, significantly emptier since Andy Rooney’s gone. But (entering the chamber) I am the guy who once commissioned a magazine cover depicting a skeleton in Santa Claus garb holding an empty sack, so my curmudgeon cred is intact. And I proclaim:
It used to be so much easier, dang it!

The New York Times recently reported that a multiplex near Seattle will actually encourage moviegoers to use their smartphones. Owners of the 2000-seat theater, scheduled to open in 2014, hope attract younger audiences who desire a “digital-friendly environment.” It’s a contentious move to say the least, but is it, as the theater’s executive director, called it “the wave of the future”?
I won’t even begin to address the complicated legal implications of this issue. Instead, I’ll speak from the point of view of someone who attended a Christmas night screening of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button...

As the Regis Philbin Farewell Tour enters the home stretch before his final 'Live' show on Friday, the Reeg's TV future remains unclear. He filmed a pilot episode of a reality show, but didn't take to the genre, and the project never went anywhere.
Tuesday on 'The View,' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) Regis came up with an innovative idea for next move. Instead of starting his own new show, he'd like to just be featured on the last five minutes of someone else's show.
"I want to be Andy Rooney!" he yelled. "I'll just spend five minutes with whoever's there," he continued, and when Elisabeth Hasselbeck joked that maybe he should assume that role on 'The View,' he jumped at the idea. "Now you're talkin' baby!"

Chicago – “The only people to see the war like this were the ones who lived it. Until now…” Sounds threatening, doesn’t it? I’m not sure I want to see WWII the same way the heroic people on the ground did. And yet I realize there’s an audience deep into material like this — that which makes history feel present and alive. For WWII historians, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better holiday season gift than the 4-disc Blu-ray set for “WWII in HD,” the History Channel series brought to amazing HD life complete with two feature-length specials.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
Narrated by Gary Sinise, “WWII in HD” aired on The History Channel almost exactly two years ago and focuses on twelve American servicemen during the conflict. The producers combine interviews with a Ton of archival footage that has been remastered into high definition. Having been raised in an...

From 1978 to just a few weeks ago, Andy Rooney entered our homes and faithfully delivered the cantankerous opinion pieces that concluded each new episode of 60 Minutes, like a sour candy at the end of a heavy meal. And just six weeks after retiring from the TV news magazine, Rooney passed away at age 92, from complications following a minor surgery. Clearly, Rooney was a man who lived for his work; when he was done, he was well and truly done.
