One of the founding members of the American country music group Dixie Chicks, Laura Lynch, died in a car crash in West Texas on Friday evening (US Pacific Time), her cousin Michael Lynch told CBS News, according to ‘Variety’.
Lynch, the group’s bassist, shared lead vocal duties on the band now officially known as just The Chicks with co-founder Robin Lynn Macy until Macy’s departure in 1993, at which point she became the sole frontwoman. She was replaced by Natalie Maines in 1995.
Chicks members Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer (previously Erwin) issued a joint statement on Lynch’s death: “We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Laura Lynch, a founding member of The Chicks. “Thank you Martie and Emily for sticking by me. I told you I’d take you to the Grammys!” said The Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines to her bandmates Martie Maguire and Emily Robison upon accepting Song of the Year for “Not Ready to Make Nice” at the Grammys in 2007. Watch them accept the prize above.
Maines, Maguire, Robison, and their writing partner Dan Wilson claimed the Grammys’ top songwriting award after a long, tumultuous road for The Chicks. At the Shepherd’s Bush Empire theater in London, England, in 2003, Maines said on stage that she was ashamed then-President George W. Bush was from Texas. This led to a swift backlash from country music fans and radio stations, with the band also receiving death threats.

The mantra of the annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, which returned to Manchester, Tennessee, this weekend after a forced two-year absence, is “radiate positivity.” For the group formerly known as the Dixie Chicks — queens of the scorched-earth, fiddle-and-banjo-tinged, stick-a-pin-in-your-voodoo-doll revenge-fantasy rallying call — those posi vibes came by way of killing Russian president Vladimir Putin in effigy. On Friday, the Chicks debuted as both the festival’s first-ever country and female-fronted headliner. And just like Earl, Vlad had to die.

Chicago — Women are preparing to rock this year's Lollapalooza music festival.
The more than two-decade-old festival opens Friday in Chicago's lakefront Grant Park with a strong female lineup, building on headlining appearances in recent years by Lady Gaga, Florence and the Machine and Neko Case.
Lana Del Rey and Cat Power will each close one of Lollapalooza's eight stages over the three-day event this year. Rapper Azealia Banks was scheduled to close a stage, too, but she canceled her appearance on Thursday. Women factor into more than 20 percent of acts scheduled to perform.
Sara Quin, of festival mainstays Tegan and Sara, says the Lollapalooza lineup reflects a growing diversity at festivals.
"Hopefully things will continue to diversify," she said. "I always love seeing female headliners."

Sara Quin, of festival mainstays Tegan and Sara, says the Lollapalooza lineup reflects a growing diversity at festivals.
"Hopefully things will continue to diversify," she said. "I always love seeing female headliners."
Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction says the festival is lucky to have so many female acts on this year's bill.

Ka, “Knighthood”"The quiet kept me inspired," boasts Ka on "Knighthood," and the song proves it. Ka, from Brownsville, Brooklyn, is a rapper-producer who thrives in silence and stillness. On his excellent new album, The Night's Gambit, as on his 2012 breakthrough Grief Pedigree, Ka raps in menacing sotta voce, in songs that unfurl over dark, spacious music. It's a sound that suits the subject matter: hard-boiled, hardscrabble tales of poverty and small-scale drug trafficking, delivered by a survivor — a man who, just barely, lived to tell. "Knighthood" is prime Ka. The wordplay is tightly stacked up, and the beat is like the story: beautifully bleak. Court Yard Hounds, “Amelita”The 2010 debut album by Court Yard Hounds — a.k.a. sisters Marty Maguire and Emily Robison, a.k.a. the Dixie Chicks who aren’t lead singer Natalie Maines — was a pleasant but tentative record. It sounded like the work of...

Emily Robison and Martie Maguire -- aka the Court Yard Hounds -- are returning with their sophomore set "Amelita" on July 16, via Columbia. The sisters describe themselves as "ex-Dixie Chicks" in a release, also noting that "Amelita" will be a bit more fun than their first self-titled album, out in 2010. “I think we’ve approached it differently because we felt like okay, we are a band. We aren’t just two ex-Dixie Chicks anymore, we’re a band and we like our sound and we’re going to continue to do this and hopefully get better at it, and share something new this...

Austin, Texas — Natalie Maines is starting out nervous on stage, almost 10 years to the day that the Dixie Chicks spitfire slammed then-President George W. Bush and forever changed the fate and fortunes of the country superstars.
On this night she barely speaks between songs.
Her hair slicks up in a punkish pompadour. She looks slimmer than when the Dixie Chicks began a hiatus in 2007 that may never end. The crowd at the South by Southwest music festival to hear Maines perform her solo debut "Mother" for only the second time is a healthy size, but it is also far from a packed house.
"We missed you, Natalie!" one fan hollers.
Maines smiles but doesn't banter back.
"I ask myself, `Why is that? What are you doing, girl?'" Maines told The Associated Press the next morning at a downtown Austin hotel. "I think right now I have so much to remember.

Emily Robison takes the lead on vocals, while her sister Martie Maguire adds harmonies and fiddle jams. Though neither boasts Maines’ forcefulness, they invest these tales of severed connections with an emotional intensity that elevates even weaker tracks like “Fairytale” and “Then Again.” Documenting Robison’s recent divorce, Court Yard Hounds takes the form of a Texas travelogue, starting in San Antonio with the plaintive “Skyline”...
