Bad Attitude: The Art of Spain Rodriguez is filmmaker Susan Stern’s personal exploration of the man she has called her partner in life and art. It’s a journey driven by her desire to grapple with how she herself felt about her husband’s work, presenting to us an unflinching critique, unafraid of discussing the most controversial aspects of his personality and art. Through contributions from comic luminaries Robert Crumb, Art Spiegelman, Trina Robbins, Aline Kominsky Crumb, and Ed Piskor, Stern tells the broader story of underground comics of the 1960s and comics in America.
Coming in at a short 71 minutes, Stern captures Spain’s creative energy and charisma. If there are limitations as to what can be shown of him in this tight window, it’s a portrait of a life lived that’s intriguing, and in moments uncomfortably so. There was the gay-bashing incident of his youth,...

Bad Attitude The Art Of Spain Rodriguez. Susan Stern: 'Spain was a pioneer in underground comics and he changed comics in this country forever' Bad Attitude: The Art of Spain Rodriguez is filmmaker Susan Stern’s personal exploration of the man she has called her partner in life and art. It’s a journey driven by her desire to grapple with how she herself felt about her husband’s work. More than a document of the man and the artist, it’s a story of a life of a person intersecting with politics and culture. But through contributions of comic luminaries Robert Crumb, Art Spiegelman, Trina Robbins, Aline Kominsky Crumb, and Ed Piskor, it’s also the story of underground comics of the 1960s and comics in America.

Dynamite Entertainment's "Vampirella" #1, originally created by Forrest J Ackerman and illustrator Trina Robbins in 1969, showcases the 'vampire superheroine' from the planet 'Drakulon', available July 17, 2019 with variant covers:
"...'Vampirella' was an inhabitant of the planet 'Drakulon', a world orbitting twin suns that were causing droughts. The 'Vampiri', were able to transform themselves into bats at will, possessed superhuman physical attributes and sprout wings when required to fly.
"With the inhabitants of Drakulon dying slowly, a spaceship from Earth crashes on the planet. Vampirella, sent to investigate, is attacked; retaliating, she discovers that the astronauts have blood in their veins.
"In order for her race to survive, she pilots the ship back to Earth. There, Vampirella devotes her energy to ridding the world of evil vampires who owe their existence to the original 'Dracula', who also came from Drakulon but was corrupted by 'Chaos'..."

Presenting two real-life stories from my days of yore, although names have been changed to protect both the innocent and the guilty.
Story The First:
I knew a girl in high school – I wouldn’t say we were friends, but she was someone who had never participated in the Piggy horrors. Sally was an A+ student, on the track to an Ivy League school. Pretty (but not gorgeous) and popular (but quiet about it), she came to me one day and said that she needed to talk to me privately. I was surprised… and a bit suspicious. What did she want? But because Sally had never been overtly mean to me, even though she was part of the clique that instigated most of the callous cruelties upon me, and because I still hoped to be “accepted,” and I wanted to believe for some reason she was about to warn me...

Next Monday marks the 100th anniversary of Jack Kirby’s birth. For one horrible moment, let us consider the following question: what if that birth never happened?
No Captain America. No Fourth World. Probably no romance comics. No Challengers of the Unknown. No Kamandi. No “Marvel Age of Comics.”
Think about that last one for a moment. The Fantastic Four, The X-Men, The Hulk, Nick Fury, Thor, Silver Surfer, Black Panther… most likely, they would not have existed; certainly not as the astonishing successes they were.
I will avoid suggesting the American comic book medium would have disappeared decades ago if not for Jack Kirby, although a case could be made for that argument. If Marvel Comics didn’t happen the way it happened, it’s possible that direct sales to comic book stores would not have happened, and that little phenomenon certainly has kept this racket alive.

Last Friday, my pal Larry Hama invited me to a “friends and family” screening of the first two episodes of Marvel’s The Defenders. I mean the new series debuting on Netflix today, not the classic television show, The Defenders, the source of many many jokes made during the screening.
Also in attendance: Tony Isabella, Michael Gaydos and his adorable son, Arvell Jones, and the families of Archie Goodwin and George Tuska. Plus a bunch of current Marvel folks who had probably already seen the whole series, but who were gracious hosts.
Before the screening began, I was feeling pretty warm and fuzzy about seeing so many of my old friends and meeting people whose work I admired. Hence, I was psyched to enjoy two hours in a comfy chair in a screening room.
Mostly, I had a great time. I have a huge crush on Charlie Cox, the beautiful man who plays Matt Murdock.

Drew Ford has spent the last few years of his life dedicated to bringing classic out of circulation comics and graphic novels back in print in beautiful restored editions. A fierce advocate for creators such as Sam Glanzman, Drew has brought back multiple books of his work, a graphic novel from David Michelinie, another graphic novel from ComicMix’s own Denny O’Neil, and many more. This was originally done through Dover Publications until Drew founded It’s Alive! Press, an imprint of Idw.
Drew’s latest project is bringing Family Man, by Jerome Charyn and Joe Staton, back in print through a Kickstarter campaign. You can view the campaign here.
I got the chance to interview Joe Staton this past weekend about Family Man.

When I’m lonely, I read.
I read at other times, of course. But books, unlike humans, are always there for me. Books don’t move away, die, or vote for Trump.
I bring this up because it’s part of my New Year’s resolution.
All of us, no matter who we might be, occasionally feel like we don’t fit in. We aren’t cool enough, or we have a funny name. We might be too fat or too thin, too tall or too short, too rich or too poor. We could be too dark or too fair. We might speak differently than other people. We might be too butch or too femme, too queer or too straight, too old or too young. We might be too nerdy or too much of a jock. We might feel so different from everybody else that we don’t even have...

One of the overlooked outcomes of last week’s election is the growth of the marijuana legalization movement. Buying, possessing and using the stuff is going to be legal for adults in Massachusetts, Nevada, California and Maine – as it is now in Colorado, Alaska, Washington State, Washington D.C., and Oregon. Over 20 percent of Americans reside in states where such use by adults is legal. In over half of these United States, weed is kosher for medicinal use.
First Fun Fact: A few years ago, the Heeb Magazine website informed us that, properly handled, cannabis is indeed kosher. That should popularize the Passover herb plate.
Second Fun Fact: If not for weed, we might not have our direct sales comic book distribution system. Back in the mid-60s, we started seeing retail outlets called “head shops” pop up all over this great nation. These places were sort of like today...

On Friday, October 21, 2016, something remarkable happened.
Princess Diana of Themiscrya was appointed an Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls everywhere around the globe by the United Nations in a ceremony led by Under-Secretary General for Communications and Public Information Christina Gallach. It was attended by the actors Lynda Carter and Gal Gadot. Remarkably, the Princess herself did not appear.
Why is this remarkable?
Princess Diana of Themiscrya is a fictional comic book character co-created 75 years ago by writers William Moulton Marston, his wife Elizabeth Holloway Marston, and artist H.G. Peter. She first appeared to the public in All Star Comics #8 (December 1941) and then was given the cover to Sensation Comics #1 (January, 1942). The very first issue of her eponymous book showed up on the newsstands in the summer of that same year.
Don’t recognize the name? Then how about this one…
Wonder Woman.

So as I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted by fellow columnist Emily S. Whitten calls “Convention Crud” and I called, last week, “Airplane Adenovirus”…
I had an Abfab time at the Denver Comic Con 2016!
That’s “Absolutely Fabulous” for those of you too young to remember the BBC show.
Overseen by the Denver-based Pop Culture Classroom, a non-profit organization whose aim is to use comics and other pop culture media to educate kids and inform the public, the con is held annually at the Colorado Convention Center, an edifice that puts the Jacob Javits Center here in New York to total shame, in downtown Denver. Incredibly yuuuge – it stretches over four city blocks – with many atriums letting in the sunlight of the Mile High City, the con never felt crowded, despite its 100,000+ attendance.

“This weekend’s Denver ComicCon came under fire when attendees discovered that a Women in Comics panel had only male panelists. While a representative of Dcc has defended the panel as “not about current women creators or anything to do with industry bias,” it seems odd that a convention with Trina Robbins, the eminent historian of women as creators and characters, as a guest would not invite her to join in on a discussion of the history of women in comics. While the misstep here is primarily on the panel organizers, it also raises a question of what obligation conventions have to moderate and comment on panels that are accepted.”

Thanks to Movie Hotties, we have a very cool photoshoot featuring the beautiful LeeAnna Vamp as Vampirella, the iconic comic book vampire superheroine created by Forrest J Ackerman and costume designer Trina Robbins. A direct to video movie featuring Vampirella was released in 1996, but it's been a long time since there was any sort of talk of a reboot. If it happens though, this professional cosplayer seems like the ideal choice to bring the character to life on the big or small screen, that's for sure! Be sure to click on the link below for a behind-the-scenes video and even more awesome photos, while LeeAnna's official website can be found by clicking right here. ...

In the early 1970s, when I was in college, I went to hear Gloria Steinem speak. The modern version of the feminism movement was still in its early stages. My memory of the talk is fuzzy, but I remember her recounting the reaction of men on the left to women’s issues:
“She walks! She talks! She gets down on there belly and slithers like a snake! It’s – a woman who thinks!”
That quote kept coming to my mind while watching She Makes Comics, a terrific new documentary directed by Marisa Stotter. I say “terrific” because it is a thorough overview of women who have worked in the comics industry, from newspaper strips to cosplay costumers. To quote from the promotional material: “Featuring dozens of interviews with such vital figures as Ramona Fradon, Trina Robbins, Joyce Farmer, Karen Berger, Kelly Sue DeConnick, and Becky Cloonan, She Makes Comics is...

I listen to feminists and all these radical gals – most of them are failures. They’ve blown it. Some of them have been married, but they married some Casper Milquetoast who asked permission to go to the bathroom. These women just need a man in the house. That’s all they need. Most of the feminists need a man to tell them what time of day it is and to lead them home. And they blew it and they’re mad at all men. Feminists hate men. They’re sexist. They hate men – that’s their problem. – Jerry Falwell

Lakes International comic art festival eschews superhero model to give women writers and artists equal billing
There's a new kind of comic event coming to our shores, modelled not on the superhero-focused all-American approach, but on a much closer neighbour: the European comic festival. With founder patrons including the Costa prize-winning Mary and Bryan Talbot, the Lakes International comic art festival has an eclectic guest list, from the artist of The Walking Dead, Charlie Adlard, to the graphic journalist Joe Sacco.
And unlike a fair number of other conventions, which have come under fire in the past few years for only inviting only one or two women guests – if any – this weekend's event taking over the whole of Kendal, Cumbria, aims to include talents old and new from both sides of the gender divide.
Long-time Guardian favourite and multiple award-winner Posy Simmonds is one such guest, a prolific artist who...

We told you last month about the PBS special presentation Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle that would be premiering in October, and tonight’s the night! Tuesday nights are pretty jam-packed for Our Kind of Viewing, but this one looks like it should get some priority.
We have a TV spot and the clip from the first hour to get you primed, and the press release is included again below so you’ll get the full details, including the info on the accompanying book and Blu-ray.
Here’s a quick scheduling note: After the initial broadcast the three hours are broken into three one-hour parts and have slightly different titles, though at least in my area they will still be aired one right after the other. So if you’re thinking of DVR-ing it, check the titles and time carefully so you don’t miss out on any of the three hours.

I don’t know why they call today Black Friday. It sounds like a superhero version of Gulliver’s Travels, as published by DC or Marvel in the 1970s. And that might be the quickest digression we’ve had on ComicMix to date.

Surprising, considering the company’s high profile New 52 relaunch. Save for Jeff Lemire’s nomination for Best Writer, most of DC’s nomination are pre-relaunch, or from their Vertigo imprint which has been left untouched by the New 52. The nominations are usually as controversial as the Oscars, with books and whole companies being left out, much to fans, sometimes, anger and confusion.
A full list of the nominations are below, courtesy of Bleeding Cool, and the award will take place at this years San Diego Comic Con.
Best Short Story “A Brief History of the Art Form Known as Hortisculpture,” by Adrian Tomine, in Optic Nerve #12 (Drawn & Quarterly) “Harvest of Fear,” by Jim Woodring, in The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror #17 (Bongo) “The Phototaker,...

As many of you may already know, each and every year, awards distributed at San Diego Comic Con to a few select (and noteworthy) nominees who are chosen by retailers and professionals in the comic book industry. The ceremony is better known as the Eisner Awards which is now heading into its 24th year with some great talent in the running. One of the most loved titles in this year’s nominee list is Marvel’s Daredevil, picking up 6 nominations that include Best Continuing Series, Best Single Issue, Best Writer (Mark Waid), Best Cover Artist (Marcos Martin), and Best Penciller/Inker Team Marcos Martin, and Paolo Rivera/Joe Rivera). DC also scored some decent recognition with their iZombie Vertigo series, gathering 3 nominations (Cover Art, Coloring, Inker/Penciller) for the creative team.

New comics available at your local comic-book retailer this week: The twisted marriage of Chandler and Lovecraft; Cold War nostalgia by a former master; Even more horror-crime; The kiddies will like it.
Fatale #4–As much as I’ve been liking this book, and as much as I like anything that writer Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips do, together or solo, it wasn’t until last issue that this book really started banging on all cylinders for me. I’m not sure why exactly: very much in the same spirit as their other books, Criminal and Incognito, and featuring some of Phillips’ best art-work, Fatale has been anything but disappointing. Perhaps it’s because in issue 3, all the seemingly disparate plot elements really began to cohere. Also, we see our titular femme fatale do some really fatale shit, and the weird, mirror-glasses dudes (see image above) start to come into threatening play.

Kim Yale.
Kimberly Yale, as you know, was John Ostrander’s wife, and it was John’s beautiful tribute to her in his column Wwkl? last week that has inspired me to write about her and our friendship.
Kim and I met over 20 years ago at a Chicago ComicCon when she chaired a Women In Comics panel to which I had been invited. I was a real newbie to the biz, wondering what the hell I was doing there, and completely awed to be meeting the real people behind the names on the splash pages of my favorite comics. So I was incredibly shy – yes, hard to believe, but completely true – when I went into the room where the panel was being held and walked up onto the dais. I didn’t know anyone…or at least, it felt like that. Although I do believe that it was Michael Davis...

…Or How The Fuck Did That Happen, Part Two
Where was I last week?
I was in the midst of a great crusade against the most terrifying villain ever unleashed upon the universe. A tyrant created by an evil greater than Mephisto – or Emperor Palpatine or Darkseid, choose your poison – whose sole purpose is to destroy humanity. A crafty, insidious, and totally nasty piece of work, capable of twisting even the greatest brains ever known – Einstein, Newton, Hawkings, Reed Richards – into Roquefort cheese, of destroying Rem sleep, of chaining even the raging Incredible Hulk to a chair for weeks.
Oh, yes, it was a battle for the ages. He tried driving me mad with visions of z-scores and ANOVAs and Pearson Correlations and Chi-Square Tests for Goodness. Of blinding me with rs = 1 – 6∑D2/n(n2-1) and Ssa = ∑T2ROW/nROW – G2/N and t = (M1 – M2) – (µ1 – µ2)/s...

Comic Book writers and artists are being invited to enter the Eagle Awards Initiative, which has now opened its website for submissions to its worldwide talent search.
With Stan Lee as its patron and a host of top creators on board as judges, the Initiative - an offshoot of the long-established Eagle Awards - is offering untried talent a chance to demonstrate their abilities before a global audience.
It is providing a unique platform from which the next generation of writers and artists can promote their storytelling ability in an increasingly competitive market.
Entrants can be a single writer/artist, a writer and artist, or a writer, penciller and inker team. They should submit a clearly told, self contained story of between 4 and 10 pages to the official website where full details can be found.
Entries will be assessed by a jury of comics readers, who will present a final dozen...

If you thought Harlan was slowing down in his old age, think again.
Earlier this month, Harlan Ellison sued Star Trek for royalties on merchandise derived from his Star Trek script, "City On The Edge Of Forever". Now, in the wake of Alan Moore's action to get Watchmen rights back from DC, he's taken up a new cause and has formed what he's calling "The Comic Book Legal Offense Fund".
For years, Harlan has been one of the biggest contributors to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, which fights tirelessly against the forces of censorship against comics. This, however, is a bit more proactive: "The Cbldf is great as a first-response team after you've been hit, but as the saying goes, the best defense is a good offense. An offense with hammers and chainsaws and legbreakers named Vinnie and the best lawyers money can get. I'm tired of playing nice with these sewer dwellers.
