Erica Messer has re-upped her overall deal with ABC Studios for a further three years, Variety has learned. She will continue to develop projects for broadcast, streaming, and cable.
Messer has served as the showrunner on the ABC Studios-produced drama “Criminal Minds” at CBS for the past nine years, with that show set to wrap up its run with a 15th and final season during the 2019-2020 broadcast season.
With the extension of her deal, Messer has now set up two drama projects for development at ABC.
The first is titled “Best Kept Secret,” on which Messer will serve as writer and executive producer. It follows a mother and ex-intelligence agent, who has long hidden her past from her family. With The Big Bang Theory in its final season, Chuck Lorre has teamed with several frequent collaborators for a new multi-camera comedy at CBS. The project, headlined by former Mike & Molly star Billy Gardell, has landed a pilot production commitment, emerging as an instant leading contender for CBS’ 2019-20 schedule.
Titled Bob Abishola, the multi-camera comedy comes from Big Bang, Young Sheldon and Mom co-creator/executive producer Lorre, Mom co-creator Eddie Gorodetsky and Mike & Molly alum Al Higgins, who have teamed with The Daily Show contributor Gina Yashere. Lorre’s long-time studio home, Warner Bros. TV, produces with Chuck Lorre Prods.
In Bob Abishola, written by the quartet, after having a heart attack, a man (Gardell) falls in love with his Nigerian nurse and sets his sights on getting her to give him a chance.
Lorre, Gorodetsky and Higgins executive produce.
This would mark the sixth consecutive series at CBS...

Night and the City
Written by Jo Eisinger
Directed by Jules Dassin
UK, 1950
Harry Fabian is probably the best at what he does, even if he is never very successful. Richard Widmark’s character in Night and the City, out now on a gorgeous new Criterion Collection Blu-ray, is a low-level con who works wherever he can, however he can, doing whatever he can to make a buck. He enters Jules Dassin’s 1950 film noir classic on the run; he will always be on the run: always hustling, always running. Sincere though his half-baked plans may be, he is perpetually—pathetically—down on his luck. He has the ambition, there’s no doubt about that, and as he shrewdly stumbles past one obstacle after another, it becomes almost humorous in the way he manages to charm his way through life, always just by the skin of his teeth. He cooks...
